Fragmented memories in the fog of war: Impaired associative memory under ongoing traumatic stress.

OBJECTIVE: Civilians exposed to prolonged missile and bombing attacks often experience traumatic stress symptomatology (TSS) and cognitive impairments, particularly in associative memory. Most research in this area has been retrospective or conducted under controlled lab conditions. The events of October 7 and the subsequent months provided an opportunity to examine the effects of stress on memory in real-world conditions before chronic diagnoses or comorbidities develop. This study investigates how prolonged exposure to traumatic stress impacts item and associative memory for neutral, positiv

On post-traumatic stress disorder and the accessibility of memories: traumatic memories in refugees and asylum seekers.

Fifty-six refugees and asylum seekers, with and without post-traumatic stress symptoms, and their autobiographical memories about traumatic experiences were evaluated with the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire, which allows the evaluation of traumatic symptoms and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the Phenomenological Questionnaire on Autobiographical Memory (CCFRA/ PQAM) that allows analysing the characteristics of their memories about quality, associated emotions, and memory accessibility. Results showed that 30.4% of participants met criteria for PTSD, which affects the difficulty to pu

Can perceived changes in autobiographical memories' emotionality be explained by memory characteristics and individual differences?

Recalling autobiographical memories (AMs) is closely tied to emotional experience. However, the emotionality associated with an event can change from occurrence to recall. Autobiographical memories show fixed affect (i.e., no change in emotionality), fading affect (i.e., decrease in emotional intensity), flourishing affect (i.e., increase in emotional intensity), and flexible affect (i.e., change of valence). The present study used mixed-effects multinomial models to predict perceived changes in positive and negative valence as well as intensity. Initial intensity, vividness, and social rehear

Abstract processing of a positive memory is associated with recalling positive memories from an observer perspective.

ruminative processing and recalling memories from an observer perspective represent two cognitive processes with adverse consequences in depression. However, no study to date has investigated the interrelationship of abstract processing, observer perspective and depression symptoms in the context of recalling personal emotional (positive, negative) memories, nor imagining emotional future events. An unselected online sample (N = 342) of participants was randomly allocated to one of four conditions: to recall a memory of a positive or negative event, or to imagine a future positive or negative

Maltreatment increases spontaneous false memories but decreases suggestion-induced false memories in children.

We examined the creation of spontaneous and suggestion-induced false memories in maltreated and non-maltreated children. Maltreated and non-maltreated children were involved in a Deese-Roediger-McDermott false memory paradigm where they studied and remembered negative and neutral word lists. Suggestion-induced false memories were created using a misinformation procedure during which both maltreated and non-maltreated children viewed a negative video (i.e., bank robbery) and later received suggestive misinformation concerning the event. Our results showed that maltreated children had higher lev

Memory for past public events depends on retrieval frequency but not memory age in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by retrograde memory deficits primarily caused by dysfunction of the hippocampal complex. Unresolved questions exist concerning the time course of hippocampal involvement in conscious recollection of declarative knowledge, as reports of temporal gradients of retrograde amnesia have been inconclusive. The aim of this study was to examine whether the extent and severity of retrograde amnesia is mediated by retrieval frequency or, in contrast, whether it depends on the age of the memory according to the assumptions of the main current theories of memory f

Clinical holistic medicine: how to recover memory without "implanting" memories in your patient.

Every therapeutic strategy and system teach us the philosophy of the treatment system to the patient, but often this teaching is subliminal and the philosophical impact must be seen as "implanted philosophy", which gives distorted interpretations of past events called "implanted memories". Based on the understanding of the connection between "implanted memory" and "implanted philosophy" we have developed a strategy for avoiding implanting memories arising from one of the seven most common causes of implanted memories in psychodynamic therapy: 1) Satisfying own expectancies, 2) pleasing the the

The locus coeruleus and memory: a study of chronic alcoholics with and without the memory impairment of Korsakoff's psychosis.

The loss of noradrenergic locus coeruleus neurons has been identified as the possible critical lesion inducing amnesia in alcoholic patients with the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. The present study aims to test this hypothesis by quantifying the number of pigmented locus coeruleus neurons in 4 alcoholics with the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, 5 alcoholics with Wernicke's encephalopathy alone but no amnesia, and 1 alcoholic and 5 age-matched controls with no neurological disorders. Apart from an increased vascularity in the locus coeruleus of alcoholics, no significant differences in the number,

Relationship between personality, memory complaints and episodic memory in young, middle-aged and older adults.

Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between episodic memory, memory complaints, and personality traits (openness to experience and neuroticism) as a function of age. Using a cross-sectional design with a multimodal assessment of episodic memory, we compared three groups of adults (young, middle-aged, and older). We examined age effects on both objective and subjective measures of memory, as well as on openness and neuroticism. Our results revealed an age effect only on the objective measures. Furthermore, associations between memory and personality differed by age group. In young a

Alignment between goals and subjective memory concerns in measuring outcomes of memory rehabilitation post-stroke.

PURPOSE: Memory rehabilitation can improve memory problems post-stroke, however gains can be difficult to measure, and may change over time. We aimed to characterise whether memory problems aligned with participants' rehabilitation goals responded differently to intervention than goal-inconsistent memory problems, to identify more targeted approaches to evaluating rehabilitation outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This sub-study was nested within the Memory-SuSTAIN trial, which evaluated maintenance interventions (booster sessions, electronic reminders, usual care) following a Stroke Memory Skil

Interindividual Variability in Memory Performance Is Related to Corticothalamic Networks during Memory Encoding and Retrieval.

Encoding new memories relies on functional connections between the medial temporal lobe and the frontoparietal cortices. Multiscan fMRI showed changes in these functional connections before and after memory encoding, potentially influenced by the thalamus. As different thalamic nuclei are interconnected with distinct cortical networks, we hypothesized that variations in corticothalamic recruitment may impact individual memory performance. We used a multiscan fMRI protocol including a resting-state scan followed by an associative memory task encompassing encoding and retrieval phases, in two in

Assessment of memory lateralization by posterior cerebral artery selective anesthesia and postoperative verbal memory decline.

OBJECTIVE: The Wada test, an intracarotid amobarbital procedure, is the gold standard for preoperative evaluation of postoperative memory decline in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. However, it has certain limitations including false negatives due to insufficient hippocampal inhibition and false positives due to extrahippocampal disorders such as aphasia. This study examined the utility of posterior cerebral artery (PCA) selective anesthesia for functional evaluation (SAFE) as an alternative approach to avoid aphasia and assessed its predictive value for postoperative verbal memory decli

Does theta synchronicity of sensory information enhance associative memory? Replicating the theta-induced memory effect.

The binding of information from different sensory or neural sources is critical for associative memory. Previous research in animals suggested that the timing of theta oscillations in the hippocampus is critical for long-term potentiation, which underlies associative and episodic memory. Studies with human participants showed correlations between theta oscillations in medial temporal lobe and episodic memory. Clouter et al. directly investigated this link by modulating the intensity of the luminance and the sound of the video clips so that they 'flickered' at certain frequencies and with varyi

Persistent activity during working memory maintenance predicts long-term memory formation in the human hippocampus.

Working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) are often viewed as separate cognitive systems. Little is known about how these systems interact when forming memories. We recorded single neurons in the human medial temporal lobe while patients maintained novel items in WM and completed a subsequent recognition memory test for the same items. In the hippocampus, but not in the amygdala, the level of WM content-selective persistent activity during WM maintenance was predictive of whether the item was later recognized with high confidence or forgotten. By contrast, visually evoked activity in the

The dynamic reconfiguration of the functional network during episodic memory task predicts the memory performance.

Episodic memory is essential for forming and retaining personal experiences, representing a fundamental aspect of human cognition. Traditional studies of episodic memory have typically used static analysis methods, viewing the brain as an unchanging entity and overlooking its dynamic properties over time. In this study, we utilized dynamic functional connectivity analysis on fMRI data from healthy adults performing an episodic memory task. We quantified integration and recruitment metrics and examined their correlation with memory performance using Pearson correlation. During encoding, integra

Joint-specific memory, resident memory T cells and the rolling window of opportunity in arthritis.

In rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other forms of inflammatory arthritis, the immune system targets certain joints but not others. The pattern of joints affected varies by disease and by individual, with flares most commonly involving joints that were previously inflamed. This phenomenon, termed joint-specific memory, is difficult to explain by systemic immunity alone. Mechanisms of joint-specific memory include the involvement of synovial resident memory T cells that remain in the joint during remission and initiate localized disease recurrence. In addition, arthritis-

Memory Deficits in Parkinson's Disease Are Associated with Impaired Attentional Filtering and Memory Consolidation Processes.

The present study examined mechanisms underlying memory deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD) and their associations with brain structural metrics. Nineteen PD patients and twenty-two matched controls underwent two memory experiments. In Experiment 1 (delayed memory task), subjects were asked to remember an array of colored rectangles with varying memory set sizes (Low-Load (2 items), Low-Load (relevant 2 items) with Distractor (irrelevant 3 items), and High-Load (5 items)). After a 7 s delay period, they reported whether the orientation of any relevant figures had changed (test period). In Exp

Memory confidence and memory accuracy deterioration following repeated checking: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rachman (2002) proposed a reciprocal detrimental relationship between repeated checking and memory confidence. Many experimental studies have indicated that repeated checking causes memory confidence deterioration while having no or little impact on memory accuracy. Thus, our main objective was to carry out a comprehensive meta-analysis to synthesize the existing research. Investigating the potential heterogeneity across studies using several moderator variables was also of interest. METHODS: The comprehensive search of several databases yielded 29 studies comprisin

Tissue-resident memory T cells: The key frontier in local synovitis memory of rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a highly disabling, systemic autoimmune disease. It presents a remarkable tendency to recur, which renders it almost impossible for patients to live without drugs. Under such circumstances, many patients have to suffer the pain of recurrent attacks as well as the side effects of long-term medication. Current therapies for RA are primarily systemic treatments without targeting the problem that RA is more likely to recur locally. Emerging studies suggest the existence of a mechanism mediating local memory during RA, which is closely related to the persistent residenc
