Macronutrient and Bioactive Profiles of Donor Milk Differ in Commercial vs Non-Profit Milk Banks.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to explore variation of macronutrient and bioactive content between levels of human milk-derived human milk fortifier (HM-HMF), and between donor human milk (DHM) from commercial vs non-profit banks. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed the concentration of macronutrients, Immunoglobulin A (IgA), and cortisol in multiple lots of each HM-HMF product (20, 24, 26, 28, and 30 kcal/oz) using multiple methods. RESULT: At each level of caloric density (p<0.0001), protein, carbohydrate, and caloric concentration in HM-HMF increased with minor exceptions while fat and cortisol conce

Does milk make children grow? Relationships between milk consumption and height in NHANES 1999-2002.

In the United States, milk (usually cow's milk) is widely considered an "essential food" to support bone growth among post-weaning age children, as evident in government-sponsored nutrition policies that mandate milk for children. Milk contains calories, protein, and calcium, among other nutrients, and bioactive components such as insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), all of which may facilitate bone growth. There is a large literature on milk and/or calcium intake and its effects on bone density, but one aspect of bone mass--height--is not well studied in relation to milk consumption. Limited

Copper absorption from human milk, cow's milk, and infant formulas using a suckling rat model.

Since copper deficiency is known to occur during infancy, it becomes important to assess copper uptake from various infant diets. We have investigated the uptake of copper from human milk, cow's milk, cow's milk formulas, cereal/milk formula and soy formula, compensating for the decay of 64Cu and using the suckling rat as a model. Radiocopper was added to the diet in trace amounts. Ultracentrifugation, ultrafiltration, and gel filtration were used to show that the added 64Cu bound to milk fractions and individual binding compounds in a manner analogous to the distribution of native copper, thu

Dynamic Gastrointestinal Digestion of Bovine, Caprine and Ovine Milk Reconstituted from Commercial Whole Milk Powders.

The global dairy market has been increasingly diversified with more dairy product offerings of milk products from different animal species. Meanwhile, milk powders remain the main exported dairy product format due to their ease of transportation. In this work, we studied the structural changes, protein hydrolysis and nutrient delivery during dynamic gastric digestion and small intestinal digestion of cow, goat and sheep milk reconstituted from commercial whole milk powders. The results show that the reconstituted milks digest similarly to processed fresh milk. The digestion behaviors of the th

Associations between the detailed milk mineral profile, milk composition, and metabolic status in Holstein cows.

The causes of variation in the milk mineral profile of dairy cattle during the first phase of lactation were studied under the hypothesis that the milk mineral profile partially reflects the animals' metabolic status. Correlations between the minerals and the main milk constituents (i.e., protein, fat, and lactose percentages), and their associations with the cows' metabolic status indicators were explored. The metabolic status indicators (MET) that we used were blood energy-protein metabolites [nonesterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), glucose, cholesterol, creatinine, and urea], an

High-Temperature Pasteurization Used at Donor Breast Milk Banks Reduces Melatonin Levels in Breast Milk.

Background and Objective: Donor human milk banks are used when breast milk directly from mothers is unavailable or insufficient. Breast milk contains melatonin, which exhibits a 24-hour pattern. Melatonin promotes sleep onset and is barely detected in daytime milk but rises in the evening and peaks early in the morning. Melatonin supports the development of an infant's own circadian rhythm and is important for neurodevelopment. Currently, donor banks pasteurize breast milk using a Holder Pasteurization (HoP) technique where breast milk is treated at a high temperature (+62°) for 30 minutes bef

Milk coagulation and gastric emptying in women experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms after ingestion of cow's milk.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal symptoms after drinking milk are often attributed to lactose intolerance or cow's milk allergy. However, some individuals without either condition still report gastrointestinal symptoms after drinking milk. This may be caused by gastric emptying (GE) rate or gastric protein coagulation. This study aimed to compare GE rate and protein coagulation after milk consumption between individuals reporting gastrointestinal symptoms and those without symptoms using a novel gastric MRI approach. METHODS: Thirty women were included in this case-control study, of whom 15 repor

In vivo absorptomics: Identification of bovine milk-derived peptides in human plasma after milk intake.

A dedicated two-step purification procedure prior to nanoliquid chromatography-electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry analysis enabled the identification of bovine milk-derived peptides absorbed and circulating in the plasma of three healthy volunteers who received 250 mL of pasteurized milk after a 10-days washout. The appearance and clearance of milk peptides in plasma were monitored at various time points. Overall, 758, 273 and 212 unique peptides derived from 15, 15 and 18 bovine milk proteins, respectively, were identified in the plasma of these volunteers, evidencing a substantial inter-i

Level of hemoglobin among cow milk and camel milk consuming young children: A comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Cow milk is an important source of macro-and micronutrients. However, it has low iron content but high content of casein and calcium thus could negatively influence hemoglobin synthesis. On the other hand, camel milk contains higher iron concentration than cow milk. In addition, the majority of iron in camel milk is associated with the lower molecular fraction of casein suggesting better bioavailability. Furthermore, vitamin C concentration, a useful iron absorption enhancer, is more than three-fold greater in camel milk than cow milk. This study compared hemoglobin concentration a

Novel multinutrient human milk-based human milk fortifier promotes growth and tolerance in premature infants.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine whether human milk supplemented with a novel human milk-based human milk fortifier (Novel HMF), compared with a bovine milk-based HMF (Bovine HMF), supports preterm infant growth through 36 weeks' postmenstrual age (PMA). METHODS: This single-center, prospective trial compared growth and nutrition outcomes of preterm infants provided a human milk-based diet (mother's own milk or donor milk) supplemented with a Novel HMF with historic controls provided Bovine HMF. Invited review: Heat stability of milk and concentrated milk: Past, present, and future research objectives.

The ability of milk and concentrated milk to withstand a defined heat treatment without noticeable changes such as flocculation of protein is commonly denoted as heat stability. A heat treatment that exceeds the heat stability limit of milk or concentrated milk, which has a much lower heat stability, may result in undesired changes, such as separation of milk fat, grittiness, sediment formation, and phase separation. Most laboratory-scale batch heating methods were developed in the early 20th century to simulate commercial sterilization, and these methods have since been standardized. Heat sta

Detection of staphylococcal enterotoxin B in milk and milk products using immunodiagnostic lateral flow devices.

Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) is an extracellular pyrotoxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus, a known etiologic agent of food poisoning in humans. Lateral flow immunochromatographic devices (LFDs) designed for the environmental detection of SEB were adapted for use in this study to detect SEB in milk containing 2% fat, chocolate-flavored milk, and milk-derived products such as yogurt, infant formula, and ice cream. The advantage of using LFDs in these particular food products was its ease and speed of use with no additional extraction methods needed. No false positives were observed with

Composition and biology of human milk.

Human milk is a complex tissue that is uniquely transferred from one individual to another and changes over time. Beyond energy, macronutrients, minerals, and vitamins, human milk contains numerous cell populations and key compounds that communicate to the offspring and protect them from a potentially harmful environment. In recognition of this evolving complexity, this review will describe the compositional changes of human milk across lactation stages, beginning with colostrum, identify nutritional gaps that may exist for some term and most preterm infants provided an exclusive human milk di

Perspectives in milk production in India.

India is the largest milk producer contributing 25 % to the global production. From a mere 17 million tons (MTs) in 1951, milk production increased to an inconceivable 230 MTs in 2023. Nondescript cows and buffaloes were the main milk animals. Since 1965, nationwide programs for cross breeding native cattle with exotic milk breeds such as Jersey, Holstein Friesian (HF) and Brown Swiss (BS) and upgradation of buffalo breeds along with disease eradication, feed and fodder development and provision of veterinary and extension services were implemented. Now 75 % of the milk in India is produced by

A Case of Milk-Alkali Syndrome.

Milk-alkali syndrome is described by a triad of elevated levels of calcium, metabolic alkalosis, and acute kidney injury that historically occurred as a result of the combined intake of large amounts of calcium and absorbable alkali. It is becoming common recently with the use of over-the-counter calcium supplements for osteoporosis treatment in postmenopausal women. We present a case of a 62-year-old female who presented with generalized weakness. She was noted to have severe hypercalcemia, and impaired renal function with a significant history of daily over-the-counter calcium supplement use

Breast Milk and the Importance of Chrononutrition.

During pregnancy the human fetus receives timed cues from the circadian rhythms of temperature, metabolites, and hormones from the mother. This influence is interrupted after parturition, the infant does not secrete melatonin and their circadian rhythms are still immature. However, evolution provided the solution to this problem. The newborn can continue receiving the mother's timed cues through breastmilk. Colostrum, transitional, and mature human milk are extraordinary complex biofluids that besides nutrients, contain an array of other non-nutritive components. Upon birth the first milk, col

We report a case of hypermagnesemia associated with the use of milk of magnesia in a male patient with end-stage renal disease. After experiencing nausea and vomiting, he developed severe bradycardia and then asystole. Resuscitation efforts were successful; however, he developed atrial fibrillation with severe widening of the QRS and diffuse ST elevation, hypothermia, hypotension and apnoea requiring intubation. Initial diagnoses included ST-elevation myocardial infarction, cardiogenic and/or septic shock and hyperkalaemia. However, serum magnesium was later found to be >4.1 mmol/L (equivalent
