Biomedical applications of lignin nanoparticles and their nanoconjugates: Advancements in synthesis, therapy, imaging, and drug delivery.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer and infectious diseases is a major global challenge. It reduces the effectiveness of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics, leading to higher treatment costs and mortality. Conventional agents suffer from poor selectivity, systemic toxicity, and resistance linked to efflux pump overexpression. This review addresses how lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) and their nanoconjugates can provide relatively sustainable, biocompatible alternatives to overcome MDR through tunable surface chemistry, stimuli responsiveness, and multifunctionality. Developments in LNP synthesis u

Zinc nanoparticles from oral supplements accumulate in renal tumours and stimulate antitumour immune responses.

A successful therapeutic outcome in the treatment of solid tumours requires efficient intratumoural drug accumulation and retention. Here we demonstrate that zinc gluconate in oral supplements assembles with plasma proteins to form ZnO nanoparticles that selectively accumulate into papillary Caki-2 renal tumours and promote the recruitment of dendritic cells and cytotoxic CD8+ T cells to tumour tissues. Renal tumour targeting is mediated by the preferential binding of zinc ions to metallothionein-1X proteins, which are constitutively overexpressed in Caki-2 renal tumour cells. This binding eve

Optical and MRI multifunctional nanoprobe for targeting gliomas.

A multifunctional nanoprobe capable of targeting glioma cells, detectable by both magnetic resonance imaging and fluorescence microscopy, was developed. The nanoprobe was synthesized by coating iron oxide nanoparticles with covalently bound bifunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymer, which were subsequently functionalized with chlorotoxin and the near-infrared fluorescing molecule Cy5.5. Both MR imaging and fluorescence microscopy showed significant preferential uptake of the nanoparticle conjugates by glioma cells. Such a nanoprobe could potentially be used to image resections of glioma

Recent Advances in Multimodal Molecular Imaging of Cancer Mediated by Hybrid Magnetic Nanoparticles.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world, which is why it is so important to make an early and very precise diagnosis to obtain a good prognosis. Thanks to the combination of several imaging modalities in the form of the multimodal molecular imaging (MI) strategy, a great advance has been made in early diagnosis, in more targeted and personalized therapy, and in the prediction of the results that will be obtained once the anticancer treatment is applied. In this context, magnetic nanoparticles have been positioned as strong candidates for diagnostic agents as they provide very

Orally administered gallic acid nanoparticles adhere to intestine via in-situ gelation for enhanced UC treatment.

The increasing incidence of intractable ulcerative colitis (UC) necessitates the development of targeted therapeutics. Herein, we developed a gallic acid (GA)-based nanoparticle that forms a hydrogel with GA-functionalized pectin (PG) in situ within the intestine for targeted cohesion and enhanced local drug delivery. The nanoparticle is composed of bioactive berberine (BBR) and GA. In the presence of intestinal enzymes, the GA nanoparticle covalently crosslinks with PG to form a hydrogel in the intestine after oral administration. This bioactive, mucoadhesive drug delivery system is engineere

Catalase-assembled nanoparticles for PA/CT dual-modality imaging and repair of acute alcoholic gastritis.

The development of simple, rapid, sensitive and noninvasive theranostic agents for acute gastritis is crucial. Herein, an engineering catalase-conjugated bismuth nanoparticle was fabricated for near-infrared photoacoustic imaging and computed tomography imaging of acute alcoholic gastritis. This nanoparticle could quickly respond to H2O2 and H+ overexpressed in the microenvironment of acute gastritis in mice, emitting strong signals for precise localization. Additionally, it adhered to the damaged gastric mucosa for an extended period, acting as a long-acting mucosal protector by inhibiting re

Enhancing optical forces on fluorescent up-converting nanoparticles by surface charge tailoring.

3D remote control of multifunctional fluorescent up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs) using optical forces is being required for a great variety of applications including single-particle spectroscopy, single-particle intracellular sensing, controlled and selective light-activated drug delivery and light control at the nanoscale. Most of these potential applications find a serious limitation in the reduced value of optical forces (tens of fN) acting on these nanoparticles, due to their reduced dimensions (typically around 10 nm). In this work, this limitation is faced and it is demonstrated that

Contact lenses coated with hybrid multifunctional ternary nanocoatings (Phytomolecule-coated ZnO nanoparticles:Gallic Acid:Tobramycin) for the treatment of bacterial and fungal keratitis.

Contact lenses are widely used for visual corrections. However, while wearing contact lenses, eyes typically face discomforts (itching, irritation, burning, etc.) due to foreign object sensation, lack of oxygen permeability, and tear film disruption as opposed to a lack of wetting agents. Eyes are also prone to ocular infections such as bacterial keratitis (BK) and fungal keratitis (FK) and inflammatory events such as contact lens-related acute red eye (CLARE), contact lens peripheral ulcer (CLPU), and infiltrative keratitis (IK) caused by pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains that contamina

Self-Templated HPEI Nanoreactors: Cross-Linking-Directed In Situ Growth of Gold Nanoparticles in Reusable Polymer-Metal Catalytic Films.

Hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HPEI)-derived cross-linked polymers (P25-P100) were investigated as multifunctional platforms for the in situ synthesis and stabilization of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The intrinsic redox activity of the polymer enabled Au(III) reduction without external reducing agents, yielding localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) bands in the 500-540 nm region. Comparative studies using hydrazine and citrate revealed that external reductants accelerated nucleation but did not improve long-term colloidal stability. Systematic variation of cross-linking density demonstr
