Several options exist for the management olecranon fractures. These include tension band, plate and intramedullary fixation techniques as well as fragment excision with triceps advancement and non-operative management. No one technique is suitable for the management of all olecranon fractures. In deciding how to treat this common trauma presentation, the surgeon needs a good understanding of the anatomy, different fracture morphologies, surgical options and potential complications. With appropriate management and early mobilisation good functional results can be expected in the majority of pat

BACKGROUND: The reconstruction of soft tissue defects of the elbow area (including antecubital fossa and peri-olecranon area) should be performed with the most appropriate soft tissue and functional rehabilitation immediately.
METHODS: Ten patients were included in this study. One had a brachial artery defect, another had postburn axillary contracture deformity, and a third had an ulnar bone body fracture in addition to their soft tissue defects, while the remaining seven had only soft tissue defect. Patients underwent surgical closure either by local arm fasciocutaneous flap (1), radial fore

Fractures around the elbow joint comprise fractures of the distal humerus, the radial head, the olecranon and the coronoid process. Combined lesions are particularly demanding for the surgeon. Accurate knowledge of the anatomy and of the biomechanics is an essential requirement for a specific diagnosis and therapy. A stable and painless movable elbow joint is essential for most of the activities of daily living. Risk factors for the development of posttraumatic elbow joint arthrosis are non-anatomically reconstructed joint surfaces, axial malalignment of the joint axis and untreated concomitan

Cubitus deformities are often identified via anteroposterior views of the elbow; however, irradiating both limbs is required in this method to confirm and quantify the deformity. This brief report proposes a new method of evaluating lateral radiographs for the presence of cubitus varus and valgus by identifying a key landmark: the overlap of the trochlea and capitellum within the olecranon and coronoid processes, without a contralateral radiograph. On a lateral radiograph, the relationship of the radio capitular line proximal to the ulnotrochlear line depicts a cubitus valgus deformity and the

OBJECTIVE: Olecranon osteotomy and paratricipital approaches were widely used in the treatment of type C distal humerus fracture but some disadvantages exist, so a combined medial and lateral approach was designed. The objective of this study was to investigate and compare the clinical outcomes of combined medial and lateral approach with the paratricipital approach in open reduction and internal fixation of type C distal humerus fractures.
METHODS: From May 2018 to April 2020, 37 patients with type C distal humerus fracture who accepted open reduction and internal fixation in our hospital we

BACKGROUND: Although preventing triceps fragment displacement is essential for treating an olecranon fracture, we frequently encounter situations in which only a few screws can be fixed to the triceps fragment. The aim of this study was to compare the stability of double-plate fixation and posterior plate fixation for olecranon fractures when the triceps fragment was small and only 2 screws could be inserted.
METHODS: A composite ulna model was used to simulate olecranon fracture. Four groups were formed consisting of double-plate and posterior plates with cortical and locking screws. The cyc

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that the outcomes of articular reduction with elimination of irreducible articular intercalary fragments for Mayo type IIB fractures fixed using olecranon locking plates would be as satisfactory as those of noncomminuted fractures.
METHODS: A total of 65 patients were enrolled from among 92 who had undergone operative treatment for olecranon fractures between March 2008 and February 2015. Patients with fragments that were eliminated because they were too comminuted to be fixed during surgery (type IIB) were included in group 1. Patients without intraarticular commi

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyze and compare total deformations with tension band wiring (TBW), intramedullary screw (IS) and novel suture anchor (SA) fixation methods, and to investigate practicality of SA fixation in olecranon fractures using finite element analysis (FEA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This finite element analysis study was conducted between May 2019 and October 2019. TBW, IS and SA fixation methods were compared in order to analyze fracture behavior in the ulna and humerus using FEA, which is among the mathematical methods of stress analysis. Boundary conditions were applie

A 55-year-old man with a history of haemophilia A and bilateral haemophilic arthropathy of the elbows presented with an enlarging left elbow mass and worsening paresthesias in the ulnar distribution of the left hand. The mass, originally thought to be olecranon bursitis and treated as such, was found to be due to a haemophilic pseudotumour. The patient underwent successful excision of the haemophilic pseudotumour with concomitant ulnar nerve decompression and had sustained resolution of the pseudotumour and symptoms at 10 years of follow-up. This case demonstrates the need for consideration of

BACKGROUND: Orbital floor fractures are one of the most commonly encountered maxillofacial fractures due to its weak anatomic structure. Autogenous bone is a commonly used option for the reconstruction of orbital floor defects by many authors and institutions. This article introduces the olecranon bone graft as a new option for orbital floor reconstruction.
METHODS: The study is based on the analysis of 13 patients with orbital floor fracture operated on by using the olecranon bone graft. The mean age of the patients was 34 years 6 months. The physical examination of 5 (38.5%) patients reveal

Severely comminuted olecranon fractures are challenging injuries. Commonly used tension band wiring exerts excessive compressive forces causing olecranon shortening, joint incongruity and humeral trochlea subluxation. We report a retrospective study of 3 patients who underwent surgery for a severely comminuted olecranon fracture, with open reduction and fixation with a bridging rigid locking plate and intercalary tricortical structural iliac bone graft. Joint stability was restored allowing early mobilization and good functional outcome. Patients' mean age was 54 years. Mean follow-up was 23 m

Compression and absolute stability are important in the management of intra-articular fractures. We compared tension band wiring with plate fixation for the treatment of fractures of the olecranon by measuring compression within the fracture. Identical transverse fractures were created in models of the ulna. Tension band wires were applied to ten fractures and ten were fixed with Acumed plates. Compression was measured using a Tekscan force transducer within the fracture gap. Dynamic testing was carried out by reproducing cyclical contraction of the triceps of 20 N and of the brachialis of 10

OBJECTIVES: To determine if inclusion of an olecranon osteotomy to the posterior paratricipital approach for operative fixation of distal humerus fractures significantly affects surgical complication rates (OTA/AO 13).
DESIGN: Retrospective comparative cohort study.
SETTING: Level 1 trauma center.
PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred four patients underwent open reduction internal fixation of a distal humerus fracture between 2007 and 2017. Of those, 134 met inclusion criteria (≥15 years, OTA/AO fracture type 13A, B, or C, and posterior surgical approach) for the study (n = 64 with olecrano

INTRODUCTION: Supra- and intercondylar elbow fractures are surgically challenging given the intra-articular comminution. Various surgical approaches have been described. Among these-olecranon osteotomy-provides optimal joint exposure but is associated with several complications. Tension band wiring (TBW) is the most commonly used fixation method. We hypothesized that double screw fixation would lead to fewer surgical revisions than TBW (all causes included) after olecranon osteotomy.
METHODS: We carried out a single-center retrospective study of 39 patients, treated between January 2007 and A
