Sex and genes, part 2: A biopsychosocial approach to assess and treat challenging sexual behavior in persons with intellectual disabilities including fragile X syndrome and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs) - and specifically those with genetic disorders - are more prone to medical and psychological challenges that affect their sexual development, experiences, and fertility. In this review paper we first provide an overview of the biopsychosocial (BPS) model and then explain how the model can guide and improve the assessment and treatment of challenging sexual behaviors by persons with IDs. We discuss two genetic conditions - fragile X syndrome and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome - in case studies, showing how the BPS model can be used to assess and trea

Meaningful Activities and Recovery (MA&R): the effect of a novel rehabilitation intervention among persons with psychiatric disabilities on activity engagement-study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Engagement in activities meaningful to the individual may support the process of recovery in those with mental illness. Persons with psychiatric disabilities may reduce their engagement in meaningful activities to various degrees with possible fluctuations over time. We hypothesized that activity engagement can be altered when opportunities and support are offered at an individual and a group peer-based level. Evidence is lacking regarding mental health interventions that enable engagement in meaningful activities, and powered effect studies are warranted. METHODS: We propose an 8

HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of persons with and without disabilities from the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey 2011: Differential access to HIV/AIDS information and services.

Uganda is among the first to use the Washington Group Short Set of Questions on Disability to identify persons with disabilities in its Demographic and Health Survey. In this paper, we review the HIV Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour component of the 2011 Ugandan Demographic and Health Survey, analysing a series of questions comparing those with and without disabilities in relation to HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and practices. We found comparable levels of knowledge on HIV/AIDS for those with and those without disabilities in relation to HIV transmission during delivery (93.89%, 93.26%) and

Locomotors disability assistive devices for frail persons: An update with focus on advancement in hybrid assistive devices.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) reported in 2023 that approximately 1.3 billion people, or 16% of the global population, are living with a disability. Among these, locomotor disabilities constitute a significant portion, underscoring the urgent need for devices that enhance mobility and support daily living. The growing demand for assistive devices highlights the critical importance of tools that foster independence and improve overall health and well-being for individuals with mobility impairments. AREA COVERED: This review provides an update on the existing locomotor assis

Functional work disability from the perspectives of persons with systemic lupus erythematosus: a qualitative thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease symptoms that can significantly restrict work ability and work participation resulting in reduced mental well-being. This study investigates the significant impact of work participation and disability on the mental wellbeing, health-related quality of life, and disease-related outcomes in individuals with SLE. METHODS: With the objective of creating an SLE-related functional profile rooted in work disability (WD) prevention, 46 SLE patients were purposively recruited from Canadian medical centres. Through semi-structured interviews guided

How does a blind person see? Developmental change in applying visual verbs to agents with disabilities.

Classic theories emphasize the primacy of first-person sensory experience for learning meanings of words: to know what "see" means, one must be able to use the eyes to perceive. Contrary to this idea, blind adults and children acquire normative meanings of "visual" verbs, e.g., interpreting "see" and "look" to mean with the eyes for sighted agents. Here we ask the flip side of this question: how easily do sighted children acquire the meanings of "visual" verbs as they apply to blind agents? We asked sighted 4-, 6- and 9-year-olds to tell us what part of the body a blind or a sighted agent woul

Increased heart rate functions as a signal of acute distress in non-communicating persons with intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) affects approximately 1% of the population. Some patients with severe or profound ID are essentially non-communicating and therefore risk experiencing pain and distress without being able to notify their caregivers, which is a major health issue. This real-world proof of concept study aimed to see if heart rate (HR) monitoring could reveal whether non-communicating persons with ID experience acute pain or distress in their daily lives. We monitored HR in 14 non-communicating participants with ID in their daily environment to see if specific situations were associat

Perceived interpersonal and institutional discrimination among persons with disability in the U.S.: Do patterns differ by age?

RATIONALE: One-third of U.S. adults have an activity-limiting health condition and this proportion increases with age. However, it is unclear whether functional limitation renders one vulnerable to institutional and interpersonal discrimination, and whether this vulnerability differs over the life course. Stigma theories suggest disability would be more discrediting to younger persons relative to older adults, as it violates cultural norms and expectations regarding able-bodied working-age adults. OBJECTIVE: We evaluate whether U.S. adults with functional impairment report higher levels of pe

Functional Limitations and Disability in Persons Living with HIV in South Africa and United States: Similarities and Differences.

Persons living with HIV (PLHIV) may experience disability. We compared disability among PLHIV in the United States and South Africa and investigated associations with health and demographic characteristics. Secondary analysis of cross-sectional data using medical records and questionnaires including the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHO-DAS) 2.0 12-item version (range: 0-36, with higher scores indicative of more severe disability). Between-country differences for the presence of disability were assessed with logistic regression and differences in severity using mult

Identifying classes of persons with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Persons with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning are often studied as a single group with similar characteristics. However, there are indications that differences exist within this population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify classes of persons with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning and to examine whether these classes are related to individual and/or environmental characteristics. METHODS: Latent class analysis was performed using file data of 250 eligible participants with a mean age of 26.1 (SD 13

[Experience with personalized medicine with respect to disability assessment in patients suffering from mental and behavioural disorders].

The article presents the outcomes of the new disability assessment paradigm, which was running for three years and concerns patients with mental and behavioural disorders. This paradigm for assessing the state of health, decrease in the working capacity, and disability in patients with mental and behavioural disorders has been asserted since 2010. It is based on the findings of the project entitled, "Advances in medical science reflected in functional health state assessment and working incapacity in relation to International Classification of Diseases and International Classification of Funct

A brief screening instrument for emotionally unstable and dissocial personality disorder in male offenders with intellectual disabilities.

Personality disorder is prevalent among offenders with intellectual disabilities (ID), and it is associated with their risk for violence and recurrent offending behaviour. A new staff-rated instrument, the Personality Disorder Characteristics Checklist (PDCC), designed to screen for ICD-10 dissocial and emotionally unstable personality characteristics was evaluated for its reliability and validity, as applied to 129 male forensic patients with ID. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were very good. Supportive evidence for concurrent and discriminant validity was obtained in conjun

Physical health--a cluster randomized controlled lifestyle intervention among persons with a psychiatric disability and their staff.

The objective was to explore the impact on physical health of a lifestyle programme among persons with psychiatric disabilities, and their caregivers. Their satisfaction with the intervention was also assessed. Somatic comorbidity and an increased mortality related to the lifestyle among persons with psychiatric disabilities are well known. Few randomized controlled trials have been aimed specifically at lifestyle issues among persons with a psychiatric disability. This trial includes clients with psychiatric disabilities living in supported housing and their staff. Forty-one persons with a DS

What symptoms predict the diagnosis of mania in persons with severe/profound intellectual disability in clinical practice?

BACKGROUND: While researchers have attempted to address the difficulties of diagnosing affective disorders in the intellectually disabled population, diagnosing bipolar disorder in an individual with severe intellectual disability (ID) remains a challenge. The aim of this study was to identify what symptoms can predict a diagnosis of mania in the intellectually disabled population. METHODS: Three groups of persons with ID participated in this study: (1) individuals with a bipolar diagnosis who were currently manic; (2) individuals with an Axis I diagnosis other than bipolar disorder; and (3)

Variable effect of comorbidity on the association of chronic cardiac failure with disability in community-dwelling older persons.

The effect of cardiac failure (CF) and comorbidity on disability in older persons was studied in a cross-sectional survey. The whole population aged 65 + years (n=652; 628 eligible) living in a small town near Florence (Italy) was enrolled. Finally, 459 individuals (73.0% of eligible) underwent a multidimensional evaluation. CF was defined as a NYHA II-IV class in the presence of an obviously abnormal ECG. Disability was assessed by the 14-item WHO scale. Comorbid conditions that had a prevalence >5% and might be considered pathophysiologically unrelated to CF were also identified. The univari

Secondary analysis of a scoping review of health promotion interventions for persons with disabilities: Do health promotion interventions for people with mobility impairments address secondary condition reduction and increased community participation?

BACKGROUND: Secondary conditions can have very serious outcomes for people with physical disabilities. Such consequences can range from immobility due to pressure sores to withdrawal and isolation due to depression, decreasing participation in the community. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To further investigate these assumptions, we conducted a review of the literature on health promotion interventions that include physical activity for adults with disabilities to determine whether they have a positive effect on the reduction of secondary conditions and increased community participation. Quality of Life and Psychosocial Impact of Sport on People with Intellectual Disabilities: The Value of First-Person Discourse.

Background: The concept of quality of life (QoL) has become a fundamental focus of research involving people with intellectual disabilities (IDs). Numerous studies have explored this concept. Furthermore, incorporating the first-person perspectives of people with disabilities has become essential in contemporary research. However, no studies have rigorously examined how sport participation among people with IDs is reflected across the QoL dimensions proposed by Schalock and Verdugo. The published literature on these aspects also suggests other emerging topics analyzed. Methods: A thematic synt
