The aim of this study was to examine the effects of 5 days of anodal-transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) over the primary motor cortex (M1) on lower extremity functional performance in healthy elderly people. This was a randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled study whereby 32 healthy older individuals participated in two groups. The intervention group received 20 min of a-tDCS (1 mA) over the M1 on five consecutive days. The sham group received the same stimulation, but the tDCS device was turned off after 30 s of stimulation. Participants were asked to perform the Timed Up an

Pain is the main symptom of inflammatory arthritis and it can impair physical functional performance and physical activity level. Some individuals can develop kinesiophobia and experience a vicious circle of worsening health. This study aimed to investigate the association between pain and physical functional performance/physical activity and determine whether kinesiophobia mediates this association. This was a cross-sectional study with individuals diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis or spondyloarthritis) treated at a Rheumatology Outpatient Clinic. We assessed pain (V

The importance of optimized recovery during a sport competition is undisputed. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of recovery drinks comprising either carbohydrate only, or a mix of native whey proteins and carbohydrate to maintain physical performance and minimize muscle damage during a simulated rugby sevens (rugby 7s) tournament. Twelve well-trained male rugby players participated in three simulated rugby 7s tournament days with a week's interval in between. Each tournament comprised a sequence of three simulated matches, interspersed with 2 h of recovery. Three differ

BACKGROUND: Early identification of age-related functional decline is essential, yet commonly used mobility assessments often lack sensitivity to detect early decline in high-functioning older adults. Muscle power deteriorates early with aging and has been associated with functional outcomes, suggesting it may be a sensitive marker of functional decline. Jump tests directly assess lower-limb muscle power, but their relationship with functional status or future outcomes has not been synthesized. This review evaluates cross-sectional and prospective associations between jump performance (JP) and

Animal models, such as high-fat diet-induced obese (DIO) rats, have been used to understand its pathophysiology. These models reveal differences between obesity-prone (OP) and obesity-resistant (OR) phenotypes. Thus, OR exhibit lower body mass gain and higher levels of physical activity, suggesting a more efficient energy metabolism. This study evaluated the metabolic adaptations and physical performance of OP and OR rats. Wistar rats (30 days old) were subjected to 23-week obesity exposure protocols. Initially, rats were randomized into two groups: a) SD: fed a standard diet (n = 39) and b) H

BACKGROUND: The original counterclockwise study carried out in the late 1970s provided an extreme example of "reminiscence therapy," reporting improvements in older adults' cognitive and physical functioning after they had lived for 5 days in a house set up as if decades earlier (the 1950s). We tested a virtual reality (VR) analog of this approach, enhanced by embodying participants in a virtual body that looked like themselves at the corresponding younger age.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether brief VR exposures combining (1) embodiment in a virtual body as one's younger self an

Sustained independence during aging reduces morbidity and mortality. Optimal physical activity (PA) is essential for independent living in older adults by preventing sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass, strength and physical performance - the road to frailty. The aim of this narrative review is to establish a theoretical foundation for the development of PA programs in older adults. PA and exercise interventions are considered due to the established dose-response relationship with performance capacity, whereby the 'dose' refers to the combination of exercise frequency, intensity, time and type

AIMS: Normalization is a method used to account for body mass in clinical practice and research. It is unclear if this method will improve the correlation between muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and physical performance. We examined the correlations between quadriceps muscle morphology parameters and physical performance outcomes in older women. Material and methods: Twenty older women participated in this study. Ultrasound imaging was used to measure quadriceps muscle CSA and echo intensity. Muscle CSA was expressed as an absolute value (cm2) and as a relative value normalized to body mass

OBJECTIVE: Despite the studies that have investigated the reliability of Upper Extremity Functional Tests(UEFTs), the reliability of Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability(CKCUES), Seated Medicine Ball Throw(SMBT), push-up(PU) and Unilateral Seated Shot Put(USSP) tests in overhead athletes has yet to be assessed. The objective of this study was to determine both the relative and absolute test-retest reliability of the four UEFTs in female overhead athletes.
METHODS: Twenty-nine female overhead athletes (age: 26.6 ± 5.29 years) underwent the four UEFTs twice within a three- day interva

BACKGROUND: Spine shapes determine the body posture, which could also be impacted by specific sports training. However, the meaning of spine curvatures in physical performance remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of spine curvatures in the sagittal plane in physical performance regarding team sports training.
METHODS: The study sample included 21±2.1 years old males: 19 team sport players (TSP) and 17 average physically active men (comparison group, CG). The spine curvatures in the sagittal plane were assessed using the photogrammetric method (Moire), and physical perform

BACKGROUND: We investigated prospectively among community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years and older whether a larger kyphosis angle is associated with poorer physical performance (balance, muscle strength, or both), and whether this association is unidirectional.
METHODS: Male and female participants performed a multicomponent physical performance test with subscores for gait, muscle strength, and balance at baseline and after 2 years. Hand grip strength was also measured at baseline and at follow-up. The Cobb angle was measured on DXA-based Vertebral Fracture Assessments, made at the bas
