Death of Socrates: a likely case of poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) poisoning.

INTRODUCTION: The death of Socrates in 399 BCE is described in Plato's dialogue, the Phaedo, written an unknown time afterwards from accounts by others. THE EVIDENCE: Socrates' death has almost always been attributed to his drinking an extract of poison hemlock, Conium maculatum, despite apparent discrepancies between the clinical features described in classical translations of the Phaedo and general clinical experience of poisoning with the toxic alkaloids it contains. EVALUATION: Recent acute philological analysis of the original Greek text has resolved many of the discrepancies by showing

Pattern of Poisoning in a Tertiary Care Center with Special Reference to Odollam Poisoning.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a major public health challenge in Kerala. Majority of adult poisoning is intentional. Most of those who attempt 'deliberate self harm' are young adults and many a time the reason is trivial. OBJECTIVES: To find out the pattern of poisoning, prognostic factors in different type of poisoning, precipitating factors for deliberate self harm and to suggest preventive measures. METHODOLOGY: This was a prospective observational study conducted among patients admitted with history of poisoning in a tertiary care centre in Kerala. Detailed history, physical examination, rele

Using poison center exposure calls to predict methadone poisoning deaths.

PURPOSE: There are more drug overdose deaths in the Untied States than motor vehicle fatalities. Yet the US vital statistics reporting system is of limited value because the data are delayed by four years. Poison centers report data within an hour of the event, but previous studies suggested a small proportion of poisoning deaths are reported to poison centers (PC). In an era of improved electronic surveillance capabilities, exposure calls to PCs may be an alternate indicator of trends in overdose mortality. METHODS: We used PC call counts for methadone that were reported to the Researched Ab

Intentional xylazine poisoning: a nationwide French poison control center study.

INTRODUCTION: Xylazine, an α2-adrenergic agonist used as a veterinary sedative, has emerged as an adulterant of illicit opioids, contributing to fatal overdoses in North America and has recently been detected in Europe. In France, despite alarmist media reports, data on xylazine exposures are scarce. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed intentional xylazine exposures reported to the eight French poison control centers from January 2010 to December 2024. Cases were extracted from the French National Database of Poisonings. Inclusion required intentional use; severity was assessed using the Poi

[Envenomation and poisoning by venomous or poisonous animals. VII: arachnidism in the New World].

The incidence of scorpion stings and spider bites is high in Latin America. This is particularly true for Mexico, part of Amazonia, and southern and eastern Brazil. Centruroides and Tityus scorpion stings present a real danger for humans, especially children. Envenomation results in intense pain, neurological signs, and cardiorespiratory manifestations that can lead to death by acute pulmonary edema or heart failure. In the event of confirmed envenomation, antivenin must be administered as soon as possible in association with symptomatic treatment and, if necessary, cardiorespiratory resuscita

Biologically active novel conformational state of botulinum, the most poisonous poison.

Botulinum neurotoxins (serotypes A-G), the most toxic substances known to humankind, cause flaccid muscle paralysis by blocking acetylcholine release at nerve-muscle junctions through a very specific and exclusive endopeptidase activity against SNARE proteins of presynaptic exocytosis machinery. We have examined polypeptide folding of the endopeptidase moiety of botulinum neurotoxin/A (the light chain) under conditions of its optimal enzymatic activity and have found that one of its stable conformational states is a molten-globule, which retains over 60% of its optimal enzyme activity. Poisoned food, poisoned uniforms, and anthrax: or, how guerillas die in war.

Many people believe that Rhodesia, struggling to maintain minority rule in Africa, used chemical and biological weapons against African guerilla armies in the liberation war. Clothes and food were routinely poisoned, and Rhodesian agents, perhaps in concert with global forces of reaction, caused the largest single outbreak of anthrax in modern times. Oral interviews with traditional healers and Rhodesians' confessional memoirs of the war suggest that deaths by poisoning or disease were not so straightforward, that guerillas and healers and doctors struggled to understand not only what caused d

Pesticide poisonings reported to the drug and poison information center in Izmir, Turkey.

This study analyzed poisonings caused by pesticides that were reported to Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), in Izmir from 1993 to 2001. Patient demographics, type of the pesticide, distribution according to month and year, route and reason for exposure, clinical effects and outcome were analyzed from 25,572 poisoning calls. Pesticide intoxications accounted for 8.8% of the poisonings, with 80.3% insecticides and 19.7% rodenticides. The majority of poisonings ranged from 0 to 6 y (28.2%) and 19-29 y (23.2%). Half the accidental exposures (57.7%) were in the 0-6-y group; the attempted s

[Poisoning by hypochlorite-containing disinfectants. A retrospective analysis of 594 cases of poisoning].

Hypochlorite-containing disinfectants or bleaching fluids, if inhaled, may lead to life-threatening poisoning (56% of moderately severe cases, 5% of severe cases) through the immediate liberation of chlorine gas, if they are used together with another cleansing fluid which is very acid. A rough estimate suggests that there must be about 700 cases of such poisonings per year in the Federal Republic of Germany. The characteristic symptom is a respiratory distress syndrome when the liberated chlorine gas is inhaled. Toxic pulmonary oedema and cardiovascular failure can occur if the poisoning take

An outbreak of suspected solanine poisoning in schoolboys: Examinations of criteria of solanine poisoning.

Seventy eight schoolboys became ill after eating potato at lunch on the second day of the autumn term. Seventeen of the boys required admission to hospital. The gastrointestinal, circulatory, neurological and dermatological findings and the results of laboratory investigations were in keeping with solanine poisoning. The illness affected the junior boys and all the monitors but no other senior boys or staff. This pattern was compatible with the consumption of a relatively small number of toxic potatoes believed to have come from a bag (A) left in the stores since the summer term. The amount of

The impact of updated national guidelines for managing unintentional paediatric liquid paracetamol exposures: a retrospective poisons centre study.

INTRODUCTION: In 2015, Australia and New Zealand treatment guidelines recommended a 2 h paracetamol serum concentration for risk assessment of unintentional paracetamol liquid exposures. We assess our experience with this approach. METHODS: Retrospective case review of children <6 years-old with liquid paracetamol overdoses referred to a regional poisons information centre January 2017 to August 2022. We extracted data on the exposure and management from the poisons information centre and hospital medical records. We identified additional cases with two paracetamol concentrations obtained fro

Patterns of antiepileptic drug overdose differ between men and women: admissions to the Edinburgh Poisons Unit, 2000-2007.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Antiepileptic drugs are increasingly used in patients with psychiatric disorders who are at increased risk of self-harm. This might increase the likelihood that these agents are used as a means of overdose. This study was designed to examine the rate of occurrence of antiepileptic drug overdose between 2000 and 2007. METHODS: A retrospective observational study examined patterns of antiepileptic drug overdose in patients admitted to the Edinburgh Poisons Unit, and compared prescription data for the corresponding region. Data were compared using chi-square trend tests. RE
