Proposal for the teaching of the chemical control of supragingival biofilm.

The mechanical control of supragingival biofilm is accepted as one of the most important measures to treat and prevent dental caries and periodontal diseases. Nevertheless, maintaining dental surfaces biofilm-free is not an easy task. In this regard, chemical agents, mainly in the form of mouthwashes, have been studied to help overcome the difficulties involved in the mechanical control of biofilm. The aim of this paper was to discuss proposals for the teaching of supragingival chemical control (SCC) in order to improve dentists' knowledge regarding this clinical issue. Firstly, the literature

Development of a self-report instrument for measuring in-class student engagement reveals that pretending to engage is a significant unrecognized problem.

Student engagement during classes includes behavioural, cognitive and emotional components, and is a pre-requisite for successful active learning environments. A novel approach to measuring student engagement was developed, involving triangulation of real-time student-self report, observation by trained observers and heart rate measurement. The self-report instrument was evaluated in four separate cohorts (n = 123) at Monash University and the University of North Carolina. The six item self-report demonstrated good reliability (Cronbach's alpha values ranged from 0.7-0.81). The self-report sho

Undergraduate veterinary education at University College Dublin: a time of change.

The final-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (MVB) class of 2005 were the first cohort of students to complete the new curriculum at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin (UCD). The new curriculum is a fundamental departure from the traditional curriculum that had served the veterinary profession in Ireland over many years. The change was not a precipitate action but the outcome of a prolonged and thorough examination of the realities of veterinary medicine, its science and its art, in the first decade of a new millennium. Over recent decades, rapid and fundamental ch

Dealing with the extraordinary: how a community of practice supports resident training during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

BACKGROUND: The practice of medicine occurs within a community of practice (CoP), where learning is shaped through shared purpose, the interaction of members, and the development of collective knowledge and skills. Through experiential learning, medical trainees become healthcare professionals within this community. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional training models, requiring residents to adapt under extraordinary circumstances. This study applies a CoP lens to explore how residency program directors (PD) perceived residents' learning, competence development, and adaptation during th
