An unexpected finding from a submental mass.

This case describes a fit and well 17-year-old male who underwent surgical resection of a longstanding, painless, right lateral neck swelling. Believed to be either a vascular malformation, ranula or enlarged sublingual gland from pre-operative MR studies, histopathological examination of the mass revealed it as normal thyroid tissue. Post-operative imaging confirmed the absence of any remaining thyroid tissue. Hypothyroidism was confirmed with subsequent thyroid function tests. Interestingly, a "thyroid storm" which presented unknowingly during the surgical removal of the lesion did not trigg

Major complications after tongue-tie release: A case report and systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie, and the number of frenotomies performed has increased over 10-fold from 1997 to 2012 in the United States. The sharpest increase has been in neonates. For parents considering frenotomy for their breastfeeding newborn, there is controversy surrounding the evaluation of tongue-tie and the benefit of a frenotomy. Complications from tongue-tie procedures are thought to be low, though it is not well reported nor studied. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to describe a case of a sublingual mucocele after laser frenotomy in a neonate wi

Unusual dermoid cyst in oral cavity.

Dermoid cysts in oral cavity are unusual lesions. Their etiology is not yet clear and can be associated with trapped cells as a result of the inclusion error resulting in the development into the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm tissues. The aim of this case report is to evidence the presence of a dermoid cyst in the floor of mouth surgically removed. In the present case, the lesion showed soft consistency, floating, regular borders, smooth surface, and the same color as the adjacent mucosa, asymptomatic and measuring 4.5 × 5.5 cm in its greatest diameter. The initial diagnostic was ranula in

Congenital abnormalities of the submandibular duct.

Five newborns presented with cystic lesions of the floor of mouth. Four of these patients proved to have congenitally imperforate submandibular salivary gland ducts and the other newborn proved to have a duplication anomaly of the submandibular gland duct and gland. The patients with imperforate Wharton's ducts underwent marsupialization with or without ductoplasty and have been without evidence of recurrence for up to three years. The duplication anomaly of the submandibular gland duct responded to simple excision. The diagnosis of congenital anomalies of the submandibular gland and duct can

Pathophysiology-Driven Anesthetic Management of Williams Syndrome for Combined Oral Surgery: A Case Report.

Williams syndrome is a rare multisystem genetic disorder associated with developmental delay, characteristic dysmorphic features, congenital cardiovascular lesions, and increased perioperative anesthetic risk, particularly when supravalvular aortic stenosis or other vasculopathy is present. Children with Williams syndrome may also present practical perioperative challenges related to anxiety, poor cooperation, and potential airway difficulty, making individualized anesthetic planning essential. We report a 12-year-old boy with Williams syndrome who underwent ranula excision and complete oral r

MR sialography. Work in progress.

PURPOSE: To develop a noninvasive method for demonstrating the main salivary gland duct systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors developed a magnetic resonance (MR) imaging protocol that uses a heavily T2-weighted (echo time, 750 msec), fat-suppressed pulse sequence and rapid acquisition with relaxation enhancement. The technique was optimized to depict fluid within a two-dimensional thick slab. A preliminary evaluation was performed by examining the major salivary gland ducts in 10 asymptomatic volunteers and three symptomatic patients with known salivary duct abnormalities. RESULTS: The

Salivary gland injury subsequent to implant surgery.

Implant-based prosthetic restoration and oral rehabilitation is a very popular modality of treatment, with excellent success rates. Although a relatively safe procedure, implant insertion has its risks, which have been described in the literature. This article describes an as-yet unreported complication following implant insertion-salivary gland injury. The characteristics of salivary gland injury are examined, and 4 cases in which the salivary apparatus was injured or obstructed during 1 of the phases of implant therapy are presented.

Human immunodeficiency virus and salivary gland pathology: an update.

Salivary gland disease is a common manifestation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, with a significant increase in prevalence over the last two decades. This review summarizes contemporary knowledge of non-neoplastic salivary gland disease in HIV infection. The aim is to update information on and bring attention to those lesions, which are almost exclusive to the salivary glands in the HIV setting. The associated conditions include xerostomia or salivary gland hypofunction; Sjögren syndrome-like illness; salivary gland enlargements, including benign lymphoepithelial cysts (cystic

Large First Branchial Cyst Extending into the Parapharyngeal Space: A Case Report.

Cystic diseases of the salivary gland include mucous cysts and plunging ranula; cysts in the parotid region are rare. In this report, we describe a case of a first branchial cyst in the parotid region. The cyst extended into the parapharyngeal space and was repeatedly infected. The patient was a 35-year-old woman who presented to our hospital with a mass on the left lower ear. Imaging findings revealed a cystic lesion in the parotid region that extended to the parapharyngeal space. A yellowish slurry was aspirated on a percutaneous fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Cytology revealed a class II tu

A rare case of submandibular mucocele extending into the oral cavity: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Salivary mucoceles, originating from major and minor salivary glands, rarely affect the submandibular gland, accounting for just 0.6 % of its tumors and cysts. With only 18 case reports in the literature to date, their occurrence in this location is infrequent. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 9-year-old male with no relevant medical history who developed progressive submandibular swelling extending into the oral cavity. CT scan confirmed a submandibular gland mucocele. Surgical treatment involved excision of the mucocele along with the submandibular and sublin

Regression of both oral mucocele and parotid swellings, following antiretroviral therapy.

HIV-salivary gland associated disease is a well accepted concept in the HIV-related literature. Parotid swellings, especially in its cystic benign lymphoepithelial form, have been largely reported. Oral mucoceles (ranulas) were also associated with HIV in some publications. The exact nature of this link between mucoceles and HIV is still to be clarified. The mainstream treatment of most of parotid pathologies and oral mucoceles remains surgical approach. Strong evidences do, however, exist about lymphopithelial lesions of parotid glands that have been successfully treated with antiretroviral d

Sclerotherapy for Benign Cystic Lesions of the Head and Neck: Systematic Review of 474 Cases.

OBJECTIVE: The role of sclerotherapy for vascular lesions of the head and neck is well established. However, the efficacy of sclerotherapy for benign cystic lesions of the head and neck is less clear. The objective of this review is to determine the efficacy and safety of sclerotherapy for benign cystic lesions of the head and neck. DATA SOURCES: PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Embase. REVIEW METHODS: The PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Systems for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses) were followed for this systematic review. Studies of patients with benign head and neck cystic

Histopathological spectrum of 112 cases of mucocele.

Mucoceles are mucous cysts related to obstruction or trauma of the minor salivary glands. The mucoceles may be lined by epithelium (mucous retention cyst) or covered by granulation tissue (extravasation cyst). This clinical and microscopic study of 112 cases of diagnosed mucoceles was carried out at the Department of Oral Pathology, School of Dentistry of São Paulo. Microscopically, the mucous extravasation cyst was the most commonly found (92.45%); however, mucous retention cysts were also observed (7.54%). Inflammatory cells mainly polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages were found in t
