Wet-cold exposure and hypothermia: thermal and metabolic responses to prolonged exercise in rain.

Simulated conditions of hiking in rain, wind, and cold, without protective rainwear, were used to investigate wet-cold hypothermia in 18 male subjects. Thermal, metabolic, and motor responses were monitored during an attempted 5-h walk (5.1 km/h) at 5 degrees C, with continuous exposure to rain (7.4 cm/h) and wind (8.0 km/h) over the final 4 h. The majority of subjects (11) could not complete the protocol because of intolerance of wet-cold conditions during the last 2 h. Therefore, data from 5 subjects who completed the protocol in rain and control conditions were used to describe the general

Analysis of human thermoregulatory mechanisms using 2-D computational model.

A numerical investigation is reported comparing various human thermoregulation mechanisms under hot and cold stress. The passive system of the developed model consists of 12 spherical/cylindrical segments and is modeled using the Pennes bioheat equation and finite difference method. The active system accounts for all regulatory responses, including the counter current heat exchange between veins and arteries; the respiratory heat loss; and threshold, gain, and maximum intensity of response mechanisms. The developed code analyzes various thermoregulatory defense mechanisms under hot and cold en

Regulator of Calcineurin 1 helps coordinate whole-body metabolism and thermogenesis.

Increasing non-shivering thermogenesis (NST), which expends calories as heat rather than storing them as fat, is championed as an effective way to combat obesity and metabolic disease. Innate mechanisms constraining the capacity for NST present a fundamental limitation to this approach, yet are not well understood. Here, we provide evidence that Regulator of Calcineurin 1 (RCAN1), a feedback inhibitor of the calcium-activated protein phosphatase calcineurin (CN), acts to suppress two distinctly different mechanisms of non-shivering thermogenesis (NST): one involving the activation of UCP1 expr

Migration and multipotentiality of PSA-NCAM+ neural precursors transplanted in the developing brain.

By optimizing the previously described strategy for obtention of spheres enriched in PSA-NCAM+ precursors, we prepared PSA-NCAM-immunoselected cell populations from cerebral hemispheres of neonatal MBP-LacZ transgenic mice. These cells expressed Nestin, exhibited clonal expansion potential and formed spheres, which were initially enriched in PSA-NCAM+ cells but became enriched in GD3+ oligodendrocyte progenitors after 1 week in B104 contionned medium. One month after their periventricular transplantation into the brain of wild-type and/or shiverer newborn mice, cells from PSA-NCAM+ spheres exh

Restoration of thermoregulatory response to body cooling by cooling hands and feet.

Deep body temperature fell progressively by 0.5-1.4 degrees C during 3-h immersions in 29 degrees C water. Both in unacclimatized volunteers and, to a lesser degree, in divers in cold-water training, cooling the hands and feet for 1 h in 12 degrees C water during such immersion caused sensation of cold, shivering, and rise in metabolic rate; it caused body temperature to rise in unacclimatized subjects and halted its fall in divers. Tissue conductances generally fell a little in divers but rose in unacclimatized subjects, probably because of muscle blood flow associated with the greater shiver

The effect of noradrenaline and 5-hydroxytryptamine injected into a lateral cerebral ventricle, on thermoregulation in the new-born lamb.

1. Respiratory frequency, shivering, ear skin temperatures and rectal temperatures were observed following intraventricular injections of noradrenaline (NA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and saline (NaCl) into new-born lambs exposed to ambient temperatures of 4, 21, or 30 degrees C. 2. Intraventricular NA caused respiratory rate to decrease and body temperature to increase in the 30 degrees C environment. At 21 degrees C, it increased ear skin temperature but did not significantly affect rectal temperature. At 4 degrees C, NA decreased shivering and rectal temperature fell. 3. 5-HT elevated resp

Myxedema coma leading to respiratory depression in a dog.

A 10-year-old, intact male, cocker spaniel was presented with hypothermia, without shivering, and progressive stupor leading to coma. Myxedema coma, potentially precipitated by diuretic therapy, was tentatively diagnosed and treatment initiated, but progressive respiratory depression led to the decision to euthanize. Postmortem findings supported the diagnosis of myxedema coma.

Strategies and Mechanisms of Thermal Compensation in Newborn Water Buffaloes.

Hypothermia is one of the principal causes of perinatal mortality in water buffaloes and can range from 3% to 17.9%. In ruminants, factors affecting hypothermia in newborns may be of intrinsic (e.g., level of neurodevelopment, birth weight, vitality score, amount of brown fat, skin features) or extrinsic origin (e.g., maternal care, environmental conditions, colostrum consumption). When newborn buffaloes are exposed to cold stress, thermoregulatory mechanisms such as peripheral vasoconstriction and shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis are activated to prevent hypothermia. Due to the prope

Redistributional Hypothermia Prevention by Prewarming with Forced-Air: Exploratory, Open, Randomized, Clinical Trial of Efficacy.

Avoiding redistributional hypothermia that decreases core temperature by 0.5-1.5°C within the 1st hour of surgery is difficult. The efficacy of prewarming using a forced-air warming (FAW) device with a lower-body blanket on redistribution hypothermia during epidural procedures have not been investigated. After ethics approval, 113 patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia combined with epidural anesthesia were enrolled. Intervention (prewarming) group patients who were warmed from operating room entry, including during epidural anesthesia, was compared with the control

Development of local guidelines to prevent perioperative hypothermia in children: a prospective observational cohort study.

PURPOSE: Perioperative hypothermia (PH) is defined as core body temperature < 36°C during the perioperative period. The incidence of PH is not well established in children because of variations in perioperative temperature monitoring and control measures. We sought to 1) establish the incidence of pediatric PH, 2) assess its adverse outcomes, and 3) identify risk factors in our pediatric population to develop local guidelines for prevention of PH. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational cohort study at a single tertiary hospital (KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore) from J

Induced hypothermia for infants with hypoxic- ischemic encephalopathy using a servo-controlled fan: an exploratory pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Several trials suggest that hypothermia is beneficial in selected infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. However, the cooling methods used required repeated interventions and were either expensive or reported significant temperature variation. The objective of this pilot study was to describe the use, efficacy, and physiologic impact of an inexpensive servo-controlled cooling fan blowing room-temperature air. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A servo-controlled fan was manufactured and used to cool 10 infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy to a rectal temperature of 33 degrees C t

Feasibility and Safety of Transnasal High Flow Air to Reduce Core Body Temperature in Febrile Neurocritical Care Patients: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Fever is an important determinant of prognosis following acute brain injury. Current non-pharmacologic techniques to reduce fever are limited and induce a shivering response. We investigated the safety and efficacy of a novel transnasal unidirectional high flow air device in reducing core body temperature in the neurocritical care unit (NCCU) setting. METHODS: This pilot study included seven consecutive patients in the NCCU who were febrile (> 37.5 °C) for > 24 h despite standard non-pharmacologic and first-line antipyretic agents. Medical grade high flow air was delivered transna
