Neuronal populations in the occipital cortex of the blind synchronize to the temporal dynamics of speech.

The occipital cortex of early blind individuals (EB) activates during speech processing, challenging the notion of a hard-wired neurobiology of language. But, at what stage of speech processing do occipital regions participate in EB? Here we demonstrate that parieto-occipital regions in EB enhance their synchronization to acoustic fluctuations in human speech in the theta-range (corresponding to syllabic rate), irrespective of speech intelligibility. Crucially, enhanced synchronization to the intelligibility of speech was selectively observed in primary visual cortex in EB, suggesting that thi

Kinematics of disease progression in bulbar ALS.

UNLABELLED: The goal of this study was to investigate the deterioration of lip and jaw movements during speech longitudinally in three individuals diagnosed with bulbar amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study was motivated by the need to understand the relationship between physiologic changes in speech movements and clinical measures of speech performance such as speaking rate and speech intelligibility. Movements of the lip and jaw were quantified with respect to their size speed, and duration. The data revealed several changes in lip and jaw movement that coincided with ALS progressio

The effects of temporal cues, point-light displays, and faces on speech identification and listening effort.

Among the most robust findings in speech research is that the presence of a talking face improves the intelligibility of spoken language. Talking faces supplement the auditory signal by providing fine phonetic cues based on the placement of the articulators, as well as temporal cues to when speech is occurring. In this study, we varied the amount of information contained in the visual signal, ranging from temporal information alone to a natural talking face. Participants were presented with spoken sentences in energetic or informational masking in four different visual conditions: audio-only,

Improving speech characteristics of young adults with congenital dysarthria: An exploratory study comparing articulation training and the Beatalk method.

INTRODUCTION: This exploratory study compared the effects of two speech therapy approaches on speech characteristics of young adults with congenital dysarthria resulting from various etiologies: a) articulation training focusing on consonant articulation exercises at various levels (isolation, syllables, and words), and b) the Beatalk method, based on human beatboxing, i.e., producing various instrumental sounds in an a-cappella musical context. Both interventions were designed to increase participants' speech intelligibility. METHODS: Twelve adults with congenital dysarthria and reduced spee

Perception of spasmodic dysphonia speech in background noise.

The purpose of this investigation was to judge whether the Lombard effect, a characteristic change in the acoustical properties of speech produced in noise, existed in adductor spasmodic dysphonia speech, and if so, whether the effect added to or detracted from speaker intelligibility. Intelligibility, as described by Duffy, is the extent to which the acoustic signal produced by a speaker is understood by a listener based on the auditory signal alone. Four speakers with adductor spasmodic dysphonia provided speech samples consisting of low probability sentences from the Speech Perception in No

Treatment of dysarthria following subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) is an established treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Speech impairment is a frequent side effect of the surgery. This study examined the efficacy of an intensive speech treatment, the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) on dysarthria after STN-DBS. METHODS: The LSVT was administered to 10 patients with STN-DBS (surgical group) and 10 patients without (medical group). Patients were assessed before, immediately after, and 6 months following the speech treatment using sustained phonation, a speech intelli

Analytical validation of digital measure of intelligibility in progressive supranuclear palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) causes progressive speech impairment. Digital speech analysis can objectively and remotely quantify measures like intelligibility, typically judged subjectively by experts during clinical visits. The objective of this study is to validate digital intelligibility measurement in PSP via BioDigit Speech (BioSensics LLC, United States). METHODS: Forty-nine PSP patients performed standardized passage-reading scored by BioDigit Speech and three experts (18 + years of experience); expert mean score (EMS) served as the reference standard. RESULTS: D

Does Auditory Stimulation Matter? A Single-Subject Design Examining the Active Ingredients Within a Modified Cycles Approach.

This investigation compared the effectiveness of the Cycles Approach with and without auditory stimulation. Using an alternating treatment design (AATD), three preschool-aged children with severe phonological disorders received a modified Cycles Approach targeting two phonological patterns. Effectiveness was measured by the percentage of occurrence of errors. Treatment outcomes were analyzed across experimental conditions and participants with respect to the effectiveness of the Cycles Approach, modified by including and excluding auditory stimulation. All participants demonstrated improvement

Transcutaneous Cervical Vagus Nerve Stimulation Improves Speech Comprehension in Noise: A Crossover, Placebo-Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Speech comprehension in noisy environments remains a significant challenge, even among individuals with clinically normal hearing and users of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Although conventional assistive hearing devices address limitations in the auditory periphery, they do not directly enhance the brain's capacity to segregate speech from background noise. Because tonic vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has shown potential for rapidly improving central sensory processing, this study investigated whether tonic transcutaneous cervical VNS (tcVNS) can enhance speech-in-noise intel

Speech perception in individuals with auditory neuropathy.

PURPOSE: Speech perception in participants with auditory neuropathy (AN) was systematically studied to answer the following 2 questions: Does noise present a particular problem for people with AN? Can clear speech and cochlear implants alleviate this problem? METHOD: The researchers evaluated the advantage in intelligibility of clear speech over conversational speech in 13 participants with AN. Of these participants, 7 had received a cochlear implant. Eight sentence-recognition experiments were conducted to examine the clear speech advantage in 2 listening conditions (quiet and noise) using 4

Language-independent automatic evaluation of intelligibility of chronically hoarse persons.

OBJECTIVE: Automatic intelligibility assessment using automatic speech recognition is usually language specific. In this study, a language-independent approach is proposed. It uses models that are trained with Flemish speech, and it is applied to assess chronically hoarse German speakers. The research questions are here: is it possible to construct suitable acoustic features that generalize to other languages and a speech disorder, and is the generated model for intelligibility also suitable for specific subtypes of that disorder, i.e. functional and organic dysphonia? PATIENTS AND METHODS: 7

User Experience and Satisfaction With a Web-Based Application to Improve Intelligibility in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Motor speech impairments, such as hypokinetic dysarthria, are highly prevalent among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). These voice and speech deficits may significantly impact speech intelligibility, leading many individuals with PD to withdraw socially. Digital platforms may provide a feasible way to address motor speech impairments in this population while also fostering patients' self-management skills through independent home-based practice. The objective of this preliminary one-group pre-post treatment study is to provide a qualitative examination of partic
