Ovarian structure and oogenesis in King Tiger Pleco, L333, Hypancistrus seideli, (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the Amazon region.

In this study, we describe the ovarian structure and oogenesis up to the final maturation of oocytes of Hypancistrus seideli. A total of sixty females were used for gonadal analysis and subsequently submitted to light and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Four maturation stages were defined: immature, maturing, mature, and spawned. The oocytes were classified into four stages (I–IV), and the presence of atretic oocytes and post-ovulatory follicles was demonstrated. During oocyte development, changes were observed in color, size, and shape, as well as in the formation of the follicular com

Endotoxin lipopolysaccharide challenge triggers gut microbiota dysbiosis and host immune remodeling in the tiger grouper Epinephelus fuscoguttatus.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a bacterial endotoxin that can trigger immune responses in aquatic animals. The gut microbiota is crucial for nutrient absorption and immune regulation in fish. In this study, the tiger grouper Epinephelus fuscoguttatus was selected as an animal model to investigate the effects of LPS challenge on the composition and function of gut microbiota and the gene transcriptional profiles of head kidney. The results showed that LPS challenge slightly increased gut microbial diversity indices (ACE, Simpson) and decreased Chao1 and Shannon indices; it also increased the abund

Efficacy of Palm Oil Application in Tiger Puffer Diets: Growth, Body Composition, Muscle Texture, and Lipid Metabolism.

Palm oil, with its higher production, lower prices, and higher levels of palmitic acid and oleic acid, may have great potential for use in the aquafeed industry. In this study, with an 8-week feeding experiment, the efficacy of palm oil as a substitute for fish oil in tiger puffer feeds was comprehensively evaluated. The control diets (FO group) contained 8% marine fish oil as the main lipid source, while in the treatment diets, the added marine fish oil was replaced with palm oil at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, respectively, which was named 25PO, 50PO, 75PO, and 100PO, respectively. Juvenile tige

Evolution of sexual dimorphism and polychromatism in a lineage of tiger moths (Lepidoptera: Erebidae): advancing knowledge of a taxonomically chaotic group.

Pericopina is divided into 36 genera, with the greatest diversity recorded in the Neotropics. Studies on the taxonomy and systematics of pericopines are scarce, and one of the few phylogenetic hypotheses available in the literature places some Afro-Indo-Malayan lineages among the Neotropical representatives. Through a survey of adult morphological characters, we analyzed the phylogenetic relationships in Pericopina including Nyctemera and other Afro-Indo-Malayan genera as putative members of this subtribe. Additionally, we tested the monophyly of Dysschema, a key genus to understanding the evo

Large-Scale Operational Pyriproxyfen Autodissemination Deployment to Suppress the Immature Asian Tiger Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) Populations.

Effective suppression of container-inhabiting Asian Tiger [Aedes albopictus (Skuse)] (Diptera: Culicidae) and yellow fever [Aedes aegypti (L.)] (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes presents one of the most intractable problems for modern mosquito control. Traditional tools often fail to control populations of these mosquito species, and are prohibitively expensive or have negative environmental impacts. Novel approaches and tools are urgently needed for integrated container-inhabiting mosquito management programs. One of the most promising techniques is autodissemination. We present the results of

Successful use of camelid (alpaca) antivenom to treat a potentially lethal tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) envenomation in a dog.

This report describes a confirmed clinical case of tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) envenomation in a domestic dog that was successfully treated with a novel polyvalent camelid (alpaca; Llama pacos) antivenom. Samples collected from the dog were assayed for tiger snake venom (TSV) using a highly sensitive and specific ELISA. The TSV concentration in serum and urine at initial presentation was 365 ng/mL and 11,640 ng/mL respectively. At the time of initial presentation whole blood collected from the dog did not clot and the Prothrombin Time was abnormally increased (>300 s). Serum was also visib

The essential role of clathrin-mediated endocytosis in yellow head virus propagation in the black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon.

Yellow head virus (YHV) is one of the most widespread viruses seriously affecting black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) cultivation. A previous microarray study demonstrated that clathrin coat assembly protein 17 (AP17) was significantly up-regulated after YHV infection (Pongsomboon et al., 2011). Clathrin coat AP17 is a part of the assembly protein σ2 (AP-2) complex which is involved in clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) revealed that the clathrin coat AP17 gene was up-regulated 3-fold at 12 h post YHV infection. In addition, immunofluorescence microscopy showed that

Pasteurella pantherarum sp. nov., a novel species obtained from the oral cavity of lions and tigers representing a possible new candidate for bite wounds inflicted by these animals.

A new taxon, including 25 strains, obtained from the oral cavity of lions, tigers and a karakal in Danish zoos, was characterized phenotypically and genotypically. Colonies were typical of bacteria of taxa within Pasteurella cultured on Columbia blood agar or chocolate agar and demonstrated a variation in diameter of 1.5-2 mm after 24 h of incubation at 37 °C. Fourteen isolates were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and showed 98-100% identity with the highest similarity of 97-98% to the type strain of Pasteurella multocida. Partial rpoB gene sequences showed 97-100% identity among str

Ultrasound-Induced Changes in the Physicochemical and Functional Properties of Whole and Defatted Tiger Nut Flours: Association with Endogenous Lipid Content.

Ultrasound treatment can alter the functional properties of flour systems by modifying the organization of starch, protein, lipids, and other matrix components. In this study, whole tiger nut flour (WTF) and defatted tiger nut flour (DTF) were treated with probe ultrasonication at nominal power settings of 0, 300, 600, and 900 W. Pasting behavior, gel rheology, thermal transitions, X-ray diffraction (XRD), protein electrophoretic profiles, intrinsic fluorescence, and emulsifying properties were evaluated to assess how endogenous lipids influence ultrasound-induced changes in tiger nut flour. Comparative screening of Amur tiger cytokines identifies IL-15 as a cytoprotective candidate against feline panleukopenia virus infection.

Comparative studies of species-derived cytokines remain limited in endangered carnivores. We cloned six immune-related cytokines from Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), with sequence analysis revealing >90% identity across Felidae. Among all tested cytokines, IL-15 demonstrated superior and sustained lymphocyte-stimulatory activity at 200 ng/mL. To investigate antiviral potential, F81 cells were pretreated with IL-15 and challenged with feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). Mechanistic studies revealed that IL-15 attenuated virus-induced apoptosis by modulating key regulatory proteins: downreg

Histochemical and ultrastructural characterization of the gills in tiger shark, Galeocerdo cuvier (Péron & Lesueur, 1822): Structural strategies for functional adaptation.

The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a dominant marine elasmobranch predator whose respiratory physiology and gill structure enable the oxygen uptake necessary for its significant ecological role in sustaining balance within oceanic environments. The present study investigated the histological, histochemical, and ultrastructural characteristics of gill tissue in the tiger shark to elucidate the morphological adaptations that enable efficient respiration in marine environments. Histologically, the gills were housed in antero-posteriorly compressed gill pouches, with the first pair being hemib

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) reshapes the functional potential of the gut microbiome in juvenile tiger pufferfish (Takifugu rubripes) across salinity gradients.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota of aquatic organisms responds dynamically to environmental stressors such as salinity fluctuations. However, how microbial communities respond to combined environmental and dietary stressors, and how these interactions influence functional potential, remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigated whether dietary administration of tetrodotoxin (TTX), a neurotoxin naturally accumulated by juvenile tiger pufferfish (Takifugu rubripes), alters gut bacterial community composition and functional potential across salinity gradients. RESULTS: Juvenile T. rubripe

Tracking the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in Austria: benefits of combining expert-based monitoring with citizen science data.

BACKGROUND: The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is an invasive species and a competent vector of numerous pathogens. Its establishment in Austria represents a growing public health concern, underscoring the need for effective surveillance strategies. In Austria, two complementary monitoring systems are implemented, an expert-based ovitrap monitoring programme and a citizen science-based monitoring approach. This study investigates whether combining structured expert monitoring with citizen science reporting provides measurable benefits and identifies which advantages are most relevant.

The tiger moving through the tall grass: Spontaneous perception and tracking of change-defined objects from second-order features.

The most important objects - from predators to projectiles - are often those that are moving. Accordingly, visual systems are specialized for object tracking, and many models of such processing involve continually re-identifying surface features across space and time (as you might follow a tiger by keeping track of its orange stripes). Here, in contrast, we show across four experiments - and in phenomenologically compelling demonstrations - that people also spontaneously perceive and track change-defined objects, with no enduring surface properties from moment to moment. Observers viewed regul

Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic sub-study of trans-arterial vs. intravenous gemcitabine in the TIGeR-PaC phase 3 clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Localized intra-arterial delivery of gemcitabine (IAG) may provide advantages in terms of increased tissue concentration and decreased systemic dosing. We hypothesized IAG may result in decreased systemic gemcitabine concentration and associated side effects due to intracellular delivery prior to conversion to gemcitabine's inactive metabolite, difluorodeoxyuridine (dFdU). Here we report the results of a pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics sub-study within the TIGeR-PaC phase 3 clinical trial (NCT03257033). METHODS: Analyses were performed for 16 participants across 6 TIGeR-PaC stu

Establishment and identification of spleen cell line from tiger puffer fish (Takifugu rubripes) and immune transcriptome response to IHNV.

The tiger puffer fish (Takifugu rubripes) is highly valued both economically and for its culinary appeal. However, it currently faces a significant risk of disease. This study aimed to establish a spleen cell line to aid in disease prevention and control for this species. We established a new stable cell line (TRSC) from the spleen tissue of the tiger puffer fish. The TRSC cells exhibited stable growth over more than 90 generations in L-15 medium supplemented with 4 ng/mL recombinant human basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and 2 ng/mL recombinant human leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) at 2

The Quality Control Markers Study of Artificial Tiger Bone Powder Based on Peptidomic by NanoLC-HRMS and UHPLC-QQQ-MS.

Artificial tiger bone powder (ATBP) is an animal-derived traditional Chinese medicine for treating osteoporosis. The combination of NanoLC-HRMS and UHPLC-QQQ-MS was used to identify and quantify the quality control markers of ATBP. Peptidomics by NanoLC-HRMS was used to characterize the native peptides in ATBP and four individual bone extracts. Five signature peptides from the deer bone extracts were identified in ATBP and validated by comparison with synthetic peptides. These signature peptides were used as quality marker peptides to establish an analytical method using UHPLC-QQQ-MS, which wa
