Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases that affect millions of people globally. Cassia javanica L. (Fabaceae), a tree native to Asia and present in Brazil, is used in folk medicine to treat diabetes and as a laxative. We evaluated the in vitro antidiabetic potential of ethanol extract, fractions and compounds isolated from the plant's flowers. The extract underwent liquid-liquid extraction with hexane, dichloromethane (FDCj) and ethyl acetate. FDCj showed activity against pancreatic α-amylase (IC50 0.3 μg mL-1, triticum: 0.2 μg mL-1), α-glucosidase (58.6%, acarbose: 98.6%) and strong antigl

In the wake of terrorist attacks using anthrax and ricin, white powder is often encountered in cases of malicious mischief and terrorist threats. Wheat flour is a common white powder encountered in such criminal investigations. We used DNA analysis to investigate wheat flour samples for identification and discrimination as trace evidence. Species identification of commercially available wheat flour was carried out by sequencing a partial region of the ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase large subunit gene (rbcL). Samples were discriminated using short tandem repeat (STR) analysis. The rbcL seque

The molecular response of wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Yangmai 13) seedlings to heavy metal (Cd, Hg) and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) stresses were examined by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, image analysis, and peptide mass fingerprinting. The results showed inhibitions of root and shoot growth by Cd, Hg, and TCB. These stresses led to water deficit and lipid phosphorylation in the seedling which also promoted protein phophorylation in the leaves. Hg stress inhibited protein synthesis while Cd and TCB stresses induced or up-regulated more proteins in the leaves. Most of these induced

Drought stress severely constrains wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth and productivity. Here, we identify the histone deacetylase TaHDA1 as a negative regulator of drought tolerance in wheat. We demonstrate that TaHDA1 interacts with and deacetylates the L-glutamate decarboxylase TaGAD1 at lysine 493, promoting its ubiquitination-dependent degradation and thereby suppressing γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) accumulation. Loss of TaHDA1 function enhances TaGAD1 stability, increases GABA levels, and confers markedly improved drought tolerance, along with elevated grain GABA content. Integrated multi-

Understanding plant resistance to insects has lagged owing to a scarcity of cloned resistance genes. Here we report cloning of the greenbug resistance gene Gb3 in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), initially introgressed into cultivars such as 'TAM112' from Aegilops tauschii. Gb3 encodes an intracellular kinase-pseudokinase protein, featuring a unique MAP3K-like domain. This gene probably originated through fusion, duplication and indel events in the Triticeae tribe, retaining its functionality in several Aegilops species. Transgenic Gb3 expression in the susceptible Fielder wheat enhanced resistan

Wheatgrass (Triticum aestivum) and lotus seed embryos (Plumula Nelumbinis, PN) are widely consumed functional foods, yet efficacy-relevant quality control markers for gastroprotection remain unclear. We integrated HPLC-UV/LC-MS profiling with a function-guided cellular screen to identify marker candidates from PN and wheatgrass. In AGS cells, the C-glycosyl flavonoid schaftoside evoked Ca²⁺ signaling coupled to mucin-related responses, which were selectively attenuated by inhibition of the TRPM5/Na⁺/Ca²⁺ exchanger-linked pathway. In mice, PN extract (300 mg/kg), wheatgrass extract (300 mg/kg),

Wheat blast, a devastating disease originally confined to South America, has spread to Asia and Africa, raising serious concerns about global food security. By screening hexaploid wheat accessions collected worldwide, we identified two accessions that showed resistance to wheat blast even under high-temperature conditions and at the heading stage: a Triticum aestivum accession from Ethiopia (KU-7356) and a T. spelta accession from Spain (KU-1062). Genetic analyses revealed that resistance in each accession was controlled by a single gene. The resistance genes in KU-7356 and KU-1062 were mapped

High-temperature stress poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity and ecological diversity. Here, we show the effects of prolonged high-temperature stress on wheat (Triticum aestivum) and the model grass Brachypodium distachyon and demonstrate that heat stress induces iron deficiency in newly emerged leaves. Quantitative trait locus analysis of B. distachyon reveals a genomic region associated with heat resilience that includes the transporter of mugineic acid family phytosiderophores 1 gene (BdTOM1). Iron-deficiency-related genes including BdTOM1 are more highly expressed in a h

Plant fungal diseases generate serious losses in the agriculture. The bacteria producing biologically active substances that inhibit the growth of fungal pathogens can be an alternative to the chemicals. The chitinolytic bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and their physiological properties which may be useful in the promotion of plant growth have been investigated. Their chitinases and antifungal activity were studied. The isolates were also tested for indirect growth-promoting traits such as ammonia production, siderophore production, hydrogen cyanide

Amongst the processing technologies able to improve the functional features of cereal-based foods, sourdough fermentation using Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) has been recently rediscovered for its beneficial effects. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) bread doughs were prepared using LAB strains belonging to different Lactobacillus species and changes in phenolic acid, carotenoid content and antioxidant capacity were evaluated. Two L. plantarum strains out of six were able to significantly increase carotenoid content in the dough, suggesting that a higher mobilization/solubilisation of these antioxidan

The effects of foliar-applied ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and ZnSO4 on the winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) grain yield and grain quality were studied under field conditions, with the distribution and speciation of Zn within the grain examined using synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Although neither of the two Zn compounds improved the grain yield or quality, both increased the grain Zn concentration (average increments were 5 and 10 mg/kg for ZnSO4 and ZnO NP treatments, respectively). Across all treatments, this Zn was mainly located withi

Cinnamon rolls triggered anaphylactic reaction. The genesis could be wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis Two case reports from our Department of Allergology illustrate the wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA), which is a relatively rare, yet potentially fatal form of food allergy. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is the most commonly grown crop world-wide, and some individuals cannot tolerate it due to wheat hypersensitivity. The most dangerous reaction is the anaphylaxis due to harmful immune responses to various parts of the wheat proteins. ω-5-gliadin is the major causativ

Gluten proteins, namely gliadins, are the primary trigger of the abnormal immune response in celiac disease. It has been hypothesised that modern wheat breeding practices may have contributed to the increase in celiac disease prevalence during the latter half of the 20th century. Our results do not support this hypothesis as Triticum aestivum spp. vulgare landraces, which were not subjected to breeding practices, presented higher amounts of potential celiac disease's immunostimulatory epitopes when compared to modern varieties. Furthermore, high variation between wheat varieties concerning the

The paper reports the effects of selenium (Se) supply on growth and some physiological traits of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Shijiazhuang NO. 8) seedlings exposed to drought stress. The growth and physiological responses of seedlings were different depending on the Se concentration. The higher (3.0 mg Se kg(-1)) and lower amount used (0.5 mg Se kg(-1)) did not significantly affect on biomass accumulation. Treatments with 1.0 and 2.0 mg Se kg(-1) promoted biomass accumulation of wheat seedlings. Treatments at 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 mg Se kg(-1) significantly increased root activity, proline conte

Mucous cells and enteroendocrine cells of the pyloric region of the ruin lizard (Podarcis sicula campestris De Betta) have been examined by lectin histochemical and immunohistochemical methods. Binding to five plant lectins (Canavalia ensiformis, Con A; Triticum vulgare, wheat germ, WGL; Lotus tetragonolobus, winged pea, WPL; Glycine max, soybean, SBL; Arachis hypogaea, peanut, PNL) was performed to characterize glycoconjugates in the secretory products of superficial and glandular mucous cells. Lectin histochemistry revealed the presence of N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, D-galactose and N-acetyl-D

Phospholipids (PLs) are emerging as important factors that initiate signal transduction cascades at the plasma membrane. Their distribution within biological membranes is tightly regulated, e.g. by ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which preferably translocate PLs from the cytoplasmic to the exoplasmic membrane leaflet and are therefore called PL-floppases. Here, we demonstrate that a plant ABC transporter, Lr34 from wheat (Triticum aestivum), is involved in plasma membrane remodeling characterized by an intracellular accumulation of phosphatidic acid and enhanced outward translocation

The physical and chemical properties of the soil are important factors influencing the yield of crops. One of the agrotechnical factors influencing the biochemical properties of soil is sowing density. It affects the yield components, light, moisture and thermal conditions in the canopy and the pressure of pests. Secondary metabolites, many of which are known to act as a defense mechanism against insects, are of importance in the interaction between the crop and abiotic and biotic factors of the habitat. To the best of our knowledge, the studies conducted so far do not sufficiently reveal the

Phytic acid (PA), the major phosphorus storage compound in cereal grains, chelates essential minerals such as iron and zinc, thereby preventing their absorption in the human intestine and contributing to micronutrient deficiencies. Myo-inositol 3-phosphate synthase 1 (INO1) is a key enzyme in PA biosynthesis, catalysing the pathway's first step and determining PA contents in cereal grains. Although the genetic modification of PA biosynthesis enzymes can reduce PA levels in grains by disrupting enzyme function, it often impairs germination and seedling growth. Here we used a plant chemical biol
