Contributions of optical and non-optical blur to variation in visual acuity.

PURPOSE: To determine the relative contributions of optical and non-optical sources of intrinsic blur to variations in visual acuity (VA) among normally sighted subjects. METHODS: Best-corrected VA of 16 normally sighted subjects was measured using briefly presented (59 ms) tumbling E optotypes that were either unblurred or blurred through convolution with Gaussian functions of different widths. A standard model of intrinsic blur was used to estimate each subject's equivalent intrinsic blur (σint) and VA for the unblurred tumbling E (MAR0). For 14 subjects, a radially averaged optical point s

Optical quality of the eye in subjects with normal and excellent visual acuity.

PURPOSE: To study the relationship between visual acuity (VA) and the eye's optical quality in subjects with normal and excellent spatial vision. VA ranged from decimal values of 1.0 (20/20) to 2.0 (20/10) when defocus and astigmatism were carefully corrected. METHODS: In 60 eyes of young subjects, visual and optical performance with the natural pupil were measured. A forced-choice procedure was used to measure tumbling-E high-contrast VA (HCVA) and low-contrast VA (LCVA). Wavefront aberration (WA) was measured using a Hartmann-Shack sensor. The associated point-spread function (PSF) and modu

Keratoconus with good unaided visual acuities: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmic evaluation of patients with keratoconus (KC) often reveals highly myopic and irregular astigmatic refractive corrections. Irregular corneal astigmatism and central corneal scarring in patients with KC often result in a loss of best-corrected spectacle acuity. Rigid gaspermeable contact lenses generally optimize visual acuities for patients with KC. CASE REPORTS: Two cases are discussed of patients who manifested clinically diagnosed KC but unusually good unaided Snellen visual acuities (20/25+ or better) in both eyes. CONCLUSION: Good unaided visual acuities are not ne

Reduced visual acuity in elderly people: the role of ergonomics and gerontechnology.

Gerontology is the scientific study of the ageing process and special problems of aged people. Ergonomics is an applied science for optimizing performance and productivity and reducing the risks of injury, discomfort and illness. Gerontechnology is concerned with fundamental and applied research on the complex interaction of elderly people with technological products and the built environment. It has the potential to improve the capability of people confronted by the challenges of ageing. We suggest that gerontechnology may have a particular role in relation to the reduction of visual acuity,

Visual acuity and accommodation in infants and young children with Down's syndrome.

Accommodation and visual acuity were measured in 53 children with Down's syndrome aged between 12 weeks and 57 months. Results were compared with data for 136 control (typically developing) children aged between 4 weeks and 48 months. Whereas the control children accommodated accurately on near targets, accommodation was defective in 92% of the children with Down's syndrome, and there was no change in accommodative ability with age. On the other hand, visual acuity lay within normal limits for the younger children. Children over the age of 2 years showed a below-normal visual acuity, which is

[Effect of mydriasis and cycloplegia on close-range visual acuity in pseudophakia].

We have studied 21 eyes of 17 patients which underwent 3 Months before a standard extracapsular cataract extraction and implantation into the sulcus of a posterior chamber lens. All the eyes had a final uncorrected far and near vision of 0.4 (20/50) or better. We have measured the uncorrected near vision before and after pupillary dilatation with 5% phenylephrine. Then, after additional 0.5% cyclopentolate induced cyclopegia, near vision was evaluated again. Our results show a statistically significant decrease in the uncorrected near vision after pupillary dilatation (p less than 0.001). On t

Visual acuities of monocular IOL and non-IOL aphakic children.

The vision of 341 monocular aphakic children was corrected with contact lens, intraocular lens, or spectacles and the visual results of each series were compared. The acquired and infantile contact lens and IOL cataract patients achieved similar levels of aphakic visual acuities. Seventy percent of the IOL and 64% of the contact lens-acquired cataract patients achieved 20/20 to 20/40, while 22% of the IOL and 16% of the contact lens infantile cataract patients also reached this level. Twenty patients wore monocular spectacles and none achieved adequate levels of visual rehabilitation. Forty-si

Visual acuity measurements by swept spatial frequency visual-evoked-cortical potentials (VECPs): clinical application in children with various visual disorders.

Previous studies have indicated that visual acuities of normal infants can be estimated with good accuracy using swept spatial frequency visual-evoked-potentials (VECPs). In this report we describe acuity measurements obtained with this technique from 304 examinations performed on 135 children having various visual disorders. When possible, two or more different stimulation frequencies (8, 12, 15 or 24 contrast reversals/sec) were used in each patient, and three to eight sweep VECPs were obtained from each patient under each simulation and recording condition. High correlation coefficients (0.

Losses of hemifield contrast sensitivity in patients with pituitary adenoma and normal visual acuity and visual field.

OBJECTIVE: To detect early losses of contrast sensitivity (CS) in patients with pituitary adenomas, before the occurrence of visual acuity and visual field defects. METHODS: CS has been evaluated in both hemifields of 28 patients with different kinds of pituitary adenoma (mainly intrasellar) and normal visual acuity and visual field, as well as in 15 age-matched controls. Two different stimuli were used: a coarse (0.3 c/deg) dynamic (10 Hz) grating and a finer (2 c/deg) static grating. RESULTS: On average, CS and/or hemifield asymmetry were reduced in patients, whereas perimetric sensitivity

Influence of Binocular Visual Anomalies on Reading in First Grade School Children with High Visual Acuity.

The aim of this study was to describe the binocular visual status of first grade children with high binocular visual acuity. The results have shown that only 5.1% of children had normal binocular vision, 25.7% had only moderate and 67.9% had severe and moderate binocular anomalies. Significant differences were revealed between students with poor reading and with normal reading with respect to reduced convergence (P < 0.001), and mean scores of behavior symptom numbers, indicating the presence of binocular visual anomalies (P < 0.002).
