Improving Clinical Workflows: A Quality Improvement Project on Admission Documentation Standardization.

Introduction Complete admission notes are critical for patient safety and care continuity. A baseline audit of 40 surgical admission records at our tertiary hospital found major omissions: only 60% documented History of Presenting Illness (HOPI), 20% recorded Past Medical History (PMH), 60% captured Examination findings, and 47.5% included a Visual Aid. We implemented a standardized admission proforma to improve documentation completeness. Methods In April-May 2025, we conducted two Plan-Do-Study-Act (P.D.S.A.) cycles. Baseline data were collected by chart review of 40 consecutive admission no

Incidental findings in volunteer imaging used to develop radiotherapy MRI workflows.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Healthy volunteer imaging is integral to optimising sequences for use in a treatment planning pathway to ensure they are fit for purpose. Although initial imaging may not be optimal quality, it may still be possible to identify abnormalities. METHODS: All healthy volunteer participants recruited to approved studies aimed at optimising MRI sequences for use in radiotherapy at our institution were included. Participants were imaged on either an MR Sim (Philips Ingenia, Best, Netherlands) or MR Linac system (Unity, Elekta, Sweden), or both and each imaging time point was

Simulation of a Custom-Made Temporomandibular Joint-An Academic View on an Industrial Workflow.

Temporomandibular joint replacement is a critical intervention for severe temporomandibular joint disorders, enhancing pain levels, jaw function and overall quality of life. In this study, we compare two finite element method-based simulation workflows from both academic and industrial perspectives, focusing on a patient-specific case involving a custom-made temporomandibular joint prosthesis. Using computed tomography data and computer-aided design data, we generated different 3D models and performed mechanical testing, including wear and static compression tests. Our results indicate that th

Machine Learning-Assisted False Positive Detection in Metabolite Identification Workflows.

Metabolite identification is a pivotal step in drug discovery and development, enabling the comprehensive analysis of drug-derived compounds within biological systems. However, the complexity of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry data often results in numerous false positives, complicating the identification of true metabolites. This study introduces a machine-learning-based approach to improve the accuracy of false positive detection in metabolite identification workflows. By incorporating expert knowledge, we develop a feature set for metabolite-related chromatographic peaks that charac

A novel and simple workflow for investigating Mycoplasma spp. contamination in cell cultures.

Mycoplasma spp. contamination is a major concern in laboratories handling cell cultures, and routine detection methods are usually time-consuming, laborious and lack sensitivity. This study presents a streamlined workflow integrating rapid thermal DNA extraction (99 °C-1 min) with a SYBR Green-based qPCR for Mycoplasma detection. High-coverage primers targeting an 86-bp region of the 16S rDNA were designed using 109 Mycoplasma spp. sequences from GeneBank. In silico analysis confirmed full primer annealing to major cell culture contaminants (M. arginini, M. hominis, M. orale, and M. hyorhinis)

A model workflow for microfluidic enrichment and genetic analysis of circulating melanoma cells.

Circulating melanoma cells (CMCs) are responsible for the hematogenous spread of melanoma and, ultimately, metastasis. However, their study has been limited by the low abundance in patient blood and the heterogeneous expression of surface markers. The FDA-approved CellSearch platform enriches CD146-positive CMCs, whose number correlates with progression-free survival and overall survival. However, a single marker may not be sufficient to identify them all. The Parsortix system allows enrichment of CMCs based on their size and deformability, keeping them viable and suitable for downstream molec

Exploring workflows for long-acting antiretroviral therapy administration in community pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (LA-ART) can improve adherence and virologic suppression in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). While some clinics have successfully implemented these services, others face staffing and system barriers. Community pharmacies offer an alternative venue for LA-ART administration, but little is known about how workflows might be optimized. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to outline key considerations in an ideal workflow to implement LA-ART into community pharmacies from the perspective of clinic, pharmacy, and patient stakeholders.

Maternal Rat Metabolomics: Amniotic Fluid and Placental Metabolic Profiling Workflows.

Studying the metabolome of specific gestational compartments is of growing interest in the context of fetus developmental disorders. However, the metabolomes of the placenta and amniotic fluid (AF) are poorly characterized. Therefore, we present the validation of a fingerprinting methodology. Using pregnant rats, we performed exhaustive and robust extractions of metabolites in the AF and lipids and more polar metabolites in the placenta. For the AF, we compared the extraction capabilities of methanol (MeOH), acetonitrile (ACN), and a mixture of both. For the placenta, we compared (i) the extra

Preliminary evaluation of a new flow cytometry method for the routine hematology workflow.

Background In a generalist laboratory, the integration of the data obtained from hematology analyzers (HAs) with those from multiparametric flow cytometry (FMC) could increase the specificity and sensitivity of first level screening to identify the pathological samples. The aim of this study was to perform a preliminary evaluation of a new simple hybrid method (HM). The method was obtained by integration between HAs reagents into FCM, with a basic monoclonal antibodies panel for the leukocytes differential count. Methods Eighty-one peripheral blood samples, collected in K3EDTA tubes, were anal

New Technologies in Rhinoplasty: A Comprehensive Workflow for Computer-assisted Planning and Execution.

Rhinoplasty in facial cleft patients is among the most challenging types of reconstructive facial surgery due to its variability. Advances in 3-dimensional imaging enable improved preoperative assessment in rhinoplasty. In complex cases with bony support irregularities and asymmetry, it is rational to initiate planning with reconstruction of the aberrant substructure (ie, "bottom-up" planning) rather than starting the surgical design with soft-tissue morphing. We present a new comprehensive workflow in which novel advanced technologies are implemented to perform "bottom-up" computer-assisted p

A multi-parametric workflow for the prioritization of mitochondrial DNA variants of clinical interest.

Assigning a pathogenic role to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants and unveiling the potential involvement of the mitochondrial genome in diseases are challenging tasks in human medicine. Assuming that rare variants are more likely to be damaging, we designed a phylogeny-based prioritization workflow to obtain a reliable pool of candidate variants for further investigations. The prioritization workflow relies on an exhaustive functional annotation through the mtDNA extraction pipeline MToolBox and includes Macro Haplogroup Consensus Sequences to filter out fixed evolutionary variants and report
