OBJECTIVES: Button battery (BB) ingestion/insertion is a surgical emergency. We analyzed pediatric BB incidents at our institution between 2010-2015 (TP1) and 2020-2025 (TP2) to identify trends over time and strategies to reduce the duration of exposure.
METHODS: All foreign body (FB) operative retrievals during study periods were reviewed. Demographics, characteristics, and outcome data of BB were compared.

RATIONALE: Middle ear cholesteatoma (MEC) is a non-neoplastic cystic lesion that can cause severe complications if untreated. While subperiosteal abscesses, neck abscesses, and sigmoid sinus thrombophlebitis have been reported, an extensive deep neck abscess extending to the axillary fossa due to MEC has not been previously documented. This case highlights a deep neck abscess complicated by Proteus vulgaris infection during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) recovery, underscoring the importance of individualized management strategies based on pathogen characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 disease can affect subjects suffering from myasthenia gravis (MG) and worsen its clinical course, leading to intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Critically ill subjects can develop a neuromuscular complication called ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW).
