The anti-hyperglycemic action of Hei-Shug-Pian, the fire-processed product of the root of Aconitum (Aconitum carmichaeli), was investigated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic (STZ-diabetic) rats. At 120 min following oral administration of Hei-Shug-Pian at doses ranging from 12.5 to 50 mg/kg, plasma glucose of STZ-diabetic rats was found to be decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Under treatment conditions wherein plasma glucose was lowered, the uptake of glucose into soleus muscle was increased and the incorporation of glucose into glycogen of hepatocytes was enhanced. The plasma glucose-low

In this study, a polysaccharide (ACP-a1), with a molecular weight of 3.2×10(5)Da, was successfully purified and identified from the roots of Aconitum coreanum (Lèvl.) Rapaics. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis indicated that ACP-a1 was mainly composed of β-d-mannose and β-d-glucose in a molar ratio of 1.2:3.5. The effects of ACP-a1 on the tumor growth and immune function were assessed in hepatoma H22 bearing mice. Results showed that ACP-a1 significantly inhibited the growth of hepatoma H22 transplanted in mice and prolonged the survival time of H22 tumor-bearing mice. Besides, the body weight,

The botany of Chinese Aconitum species is briefly reviewed. Five species have been identified as sources of arrow poison: A. carmichaelii, A. nagarum, A. ouvrardianum, A. stylosum, and A. episcopale. The most important one, A. carmichaelii, has long served, together with A. kusnezoffii, as the main source of the Chinese medicinal aconite drugs--ts'ao wu (wu t'ou), the parent tuber, and fu tzu (ch 'uan wu), the daughter tuber. Two other aconite drugs have now been accepted into the Chinese materia medica: hsüeh shang i chih hao, from A. brachypodum, A. pendulum, and A. nagarum, and kuan pai fu,

The Tibetan people of China have used the roots of Aconitum pendulum Bush as a folk remedy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study, we investigated the effects of A. pendulum polysaccharides (APPs) on RA. Chemical analysis revealed that APPs were mostly composed of galacturonic acid, glucose, and glucuronic acid. Structural characterization showed that it is an α-glucan with (1 → 4) and (1 → 3,6) glycosidic linkages. Furthermore, we examined the therapeutic potential of APPs (100 and 400 mg/kg) in a rat model of bovine collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). Results indicated that APP administr

We present a case of malignant ventricular arrhythmia secondary to unintentional aconite poisoning. Healthcare workers need to be vigilant regarding cases of aconitum toxicities, especially in atypical presentations. There is also a need to educate the public regarding the consumption and preparation of potent TCM herbs that may result in lethal toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Aconitum alkaloids from Aconitum species are often used to treat arthritis and rheumatic diseases but have the drawback of high toxicity. Identifying their pharmacokinetic behaviour is important for the safe clinical application of Aconitum species. Efflux transporters (ETs), including P-glycoprotein (P-gp), multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2), and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP), have important functions in regulating the pharmacokinetic behaviours of drugs and in herb-herb or herb-drug interactions (HDIs). The Aconitum alkaloids regulate P-gp expression and f

Seven undescribed phthalate-related compounds, designated alternyxtiols A-G (1-7), were isolated from the endophytic fungus Alternaria sp. YUD24001, which was found in Aconitum hemsleyanum. The structures of alternyxtiols A and B feature a benzofuran ring instead of the typical benzofuran ketone structure. Alternyxtiol C is identified as a penta-substituted phenol derivative, whereas alternyxtiols D-G comprise two rare penta-substituted phenol dimers. The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated through spectral data analysis. Their absolute configurations were determined using T

This study presents an observation of the anti-inflammatory effect of Aconitum carmichaeli decoction on water-immersion stress induced gastric ulcer in mice and 0.6 mol/L HCl induced gastric ulcer in rats. The observation showed that the decoction was resistant to the castor oil induced and Cassia angustifolia leaf induced experimental diarrhea in mice, and also had marked analgesic action. It is thus suggested that Aconitum carmichaeli is useful clinically as a spleen-stomach warming and analgesic agent in traditional Chinese medicine.

Aconitum napellus is an extremely dangerous plant that contains various toxic diterpenoid alkaloids, mainly aconitine primarily concentrated in the roots. We report a case of acute intoxication of a 21-year-old man admitted to our Emergency Department after the ingestion, in order to sleep, of three homemade Aconitum napellus capsules. Capsules were measured to contain 237 mg of root and 19 microg of aconitine. The patient experienced the first symptoms on wakening 5 hours later with generalized paresthesia, nausea, diarrhea, vertigo, thoracic pain dyspnea, and dyschromatopsia. At admission, 7

Targeting NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) holds promise as a novel strategy for treating depression. Chemical investigation of the lateral roots of Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux (Fuzi) led to the isolation of five new diterpenoid alkaloids acarmalines A-E (1-5). Their structures were elucidated based on the spectroscopic analysis (1D, 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS, and IR) and quantum chemical calculations. Their biosynthetic pathways were also discussed. Bioactivity studies demonstrated that 1, 2, 4 and 5 showed significant neuroprotective effects in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. Notably, compound 1 reve

Aconitum species have been used as traditional medicines in Asian countries for millennia, and contain well-characterized bioactive diterpenoid alkaloids. In contrast, American Aconitum species have been less studied, despite their close phylogenetical relationship to the important Asian medicinal species. This study aims to investigate the chemistry and bioactivity of American Aconitum, since they also produce diterpenoid alkaloids that possess toxicity. The chemical profiles of three American Aconitum species, A. delphiniifolium, A. columbianum, and A. uncinatum, and their four individual pl
