Maternal smoking, alcohol drinking, and febrile convulsion.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that maternal cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking during pregnancy may increase risk for febrile convulsion during childhood. We evaluated the relationship of maternal smoking, alcohol drinking, and their interaction on febrile convulsion. METHOD: Pregnant women (n=10,108) enrolled in the Child Health and Development Studies in California between 1959 and 1966 were interviewed about their habits during pregnancy and febrile convulsions of the child were ascertained soon after an event. RESULTS: Febrile convulsions were reported in 2.9% of childr

[Fetal injury and alcohol drinking during pregnancy].

BACKGROUND: There is still an ongoing discussion whether moderate alcohol consumption during pregnancy is harmful to the fetus. In most western countries, however, total abstinence is recommended. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Over the last five years we have seen 64 infants and children with alcohol-related disorders. We present the clinical records of one alcohol-damaged child, and present the latest recommended categorisation of alcohol-related disorders in infants and children. RESULTS: In our experience, some women with heavy alcohol consumption are allowed to continue their abuse without inter

Living arrangements, heavy drinking and alcohol dependence.

AIMS: To assess the variation in heavy drinking and alcohol dependence by living arrangements, and the contribution of social and behavioural factors to this variation. DESIGN: The Health 2000 survey is a nationally representative cross-sectional survey conducted in Finland in 2000-2001 (N = 4589 in the age-range of 30-54 years, response rate 81%). MEASUREMENTS: Living arrangements; married, cohabiting, living with other(s) than a partner, and living alone. Consumption of beer, wine and spirits in the past month was converted into grams of alcohol/week, and heavy drinking was classified as >

Drinking pattern and alcohol-related medical disorders.

Although heavy alcohol intake is known to be one of the most common causative factors of liver disease, pancreatitis, upper gastrointestinal and neurological disorders, the influence of the drinking pattern is largely unknown. The study investigated the relationship of alcohol-related medical disorders in alcoholics and their drinking pattern. Two hundred and forty-one chronic alcoholics were referred consecutively for detoxification and their drinking pattern was sufficient for them to be included in this study. History of alcohol abuse as well as drinking behaviour in the last 6 months were

[Alcohol drinking among students and behavior disorders].

The study concerns relationship between the amount of consumed alcohol (vodka), related to blood alcohol concentration, and behaviour, 1255 students (670 men and 585 women) were studied. Probable alcohol concentration and resulting behavioral signs were assumed basing of B. Leonhard's model (1983). The analysis of the results revealed that 33% of women and 12% of men did not use vodka. Most proportion of men (about 25%) will have blood alcohol level in the range 0.09-0.12% and similar group (about 25%) will have above 0.3% alcohol in blood judging from the volume of used vodka. Most women (30%

Is why we drink alcohol important when considering the potential public health benefit of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks? A cross-sectional study investigating associations between alcohol drinking motives and alcohol-free and low-alcohol drink consumption among adults in Great Britain.

INTRODUCTION: The UK has promoted increased availability of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks (no/lo, ≤1.2% alcohol by volume) as a public health strategy. To be effective, no/lo beverages must replace, and not supplement, standard alcoholic drinks. Emerging evidence suggests that the reasons people drink alcohol may be an important determinant of the potential public health impact of these drinks. This study aimed to determine whether alcohol drinking motives were associated with no/lo consumption after accounting for sociodemographic characteristics and alcohol consumption. METHODS: A cro

Relation between age at first alcohol drink & adult life drinking patterns in alcohol-dependent patients.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Age at first drink has its influence on later life drinking patterns. The association between age at first drink and adult alcohol consumption has not been studied in clinical population. This study was aimed to determine the age at first drink and its correlation with adult life drinking patterns in alcohol-dependent patients. METHODS: Adult participants with alcohol dependence were included from the inpatient and outpatient wards of a tertiary care de-addiction facility in India. Questionnaires administered were National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism-Qua

Age of drinking onset, alcohol use disorders, frequent heavy drinking, and unintentionally injuring oneself and others after drinking.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether early age of drinking onset is prospectively associated with respondents unintentionally injuring themselves and others when respondents were under the influence of alcohol, controlling for current alcohol dependence/abuse, frequency of consuming 5 drinks per occasion, and other demographic characteristics. METHODS: From 2001 to 2002, in-person interviews were conducted with a national multistage probability sample of 43,093 adults aged 18 years older. From 2004 to 2005, of 39,959 eligible respondents, 34,653 were reinterviewed. The cumulative 2-survey response r

Current Status of Korean Alcohol Drinking in Accordance with the Korean Alcohol Guidelines for Moderate Drinking Based on Facial Flushing.

Since each person has a different ability to break down alcohol, it is inappropriate to apply a uniform standard to everyone when evaluating drinking status. In Korea, there has been a guideline for moderate drinking based not only on sex and age but Koreans' alcohol metabolism capabilities that can be predicted by presence of facial flushing response. So far, there have been no studies that have investigated drinking habits of Koreans in accordance with the guideline. This study tried to identify the current drinking status of Koreans according to the guideline. As a result, it was confirmed

Drinking history dependent functionality of the dorsolateral striatum on gating alcohol and quinine-adulterated alcohol front-loading and binge drinking.

After an extended alcohol-drinking history, alcohol use can transition from controlled to compulsive, causing deleterious consequences. Alcohol use can be segregated into two distinct behaviors, alcohol seeking and alcohol taking. Expression of habitual and compulsive alcohol seeking depends on the dorsolateral striatum (DLS), a brain region thought to engage after extended alcohol access. However, it is unknown whether the DLS is also involved in compulsive-like alcohol taking. The purpose of this experiment was to identify whether the DLS gates compulsive-like binge alcohol drinking. To ask

Real-world alcohol cue exposure and drinking risk in alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol-related cues are thought to contribute to drinking in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but their contribution in daily life remains difficult to separate from changing social contexts and internal states. We used ecological momentary assessment in two independent cohorts of non-treatment-seeking individuals, comprising a discovery cohort with AUD (17-62 years; n = 73) and a young-adult replication cohort screened for risky drinking (19-35 years; n = 56), to test whether alcohol cue exposure was associated with momentary drinking after simultaneous multivariable adjustment for social context

Increased alcohol-biased choice behavior in mouse models of high alcohol drinking.

BACKGROUND: Rodent models have explored the transition from controlled goal-directed consumption to habitual/compulsive intake using different procedures. This study evaluates the effect of concurrent presentation of sucrose on alcohol intake using two models that induce high levels of alcohol intake in mice that experienced chronic intermittent ethanol (CIE) exposure and/or stress. METHODS: In Experiment 1, male mice were exposed to four cycles of CIE or control (air) exposure, and once an increase in voluntary alcohol was observed in CIE mice, mice were offered a choice between alcohol or i

Effects of isoflavones on alcohol pharmacokinetics and alcohol-drinking behavior in rats.

Puerarin, daidzin, and daidzein are 3 major isoflavonoid compounds isolated from Pueraria lobata, an edible vine used widely in China for various medicinal purposes. We studied the antiinebriation and the antidipsotropic effects of these antioxidants in rats. Daidzin and daidzein shortened alcohol-induced sleep time (loss of righting reflex) in rats that were given ethanol intragastrically but not in those given ethanol intraperitoneally. When daidzin was given to animals intragastrically with the ethanol solution, the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was found to peak later and be lower than

Pharmacologic dissociation between impulsivity and alcohol drinking in high alcohol preferring mice.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is genetically correlated with, and precedes, addictive behaviors and alcoholism. If impulsivity or attention is causally related to addiction, certain pharmacological manipulations of impulsivity and/or attention may affect alcohol drinking, and vice versa. The current studies were designed to explore the relationship among impulsivity, drinking, and vigilance in selectively bred High Alcohol Preferring (HAP) mice, a line that has previously demonstrated both high impulsivity and high alcohol consumption. Amphetamine, naltrexone, and memantine were tested in a delay di

The alcohol-preferring P rat and animal models of excessive alcohol drinking.

The alcohol-preferring, P, rat was developed by selective breeding to study ethanol drinking behavior and its consequences. Characterization of this line indicates the P rat meets all of the criteria put forth for a valid animal model of alcoholism, and displays, relative to their alcohol-non-preferring, NP, counterparts, a number of phenotypic traits associated with alcohol abuse and alcoholism. Behaviorally, compared with NP rats, P rats are less sensitive to the sedative and aversive effects of ethanol and more sensitive to the stimulatory effects of ethanol. Neurochemically, research with

Commentary: if you drink alcohol, drink sensibly: is this guideline still appropriate?

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol abuse remains one of the most serious substance abuse disorders in South African society, resulting in inordinately large social, economic and health problems at all levels of society. Alcohol consumers in South Africa are estimated to drink 16.6L per annum with a per capita consumption of 7.1L. South Africa has one of the highest rates of death attributable to crime, violence, traffic accidents, and HIV/AIDS in the world. These rates have been directly related to the high prevalence of alcohol abuse and risky drinking patterns. A food-based dietary guideline that encourages

[Pathologic anatomy of hard drinking and alcoholism].

The analysis of 826 autopsies is presented. 654 persons in their life abused alcohol but refused treatment; they were considered as hard drinkers. 172 persons were repeatedly treated for alcoholism and were included into the group of alcoholics. The control group consisted of persons who had not abused alcohol. Morphological and morphometric methods were used. It is shown that chronic alcoholic intoxication involves all internal organs with the same trend in pathological processes in hard drinkers and alcoholics. There was progressing alteration of microcirculatory bed, fat degeneration of par
