Using highly purified antibodies to cerebral alpha 2-globulin (alpha 2-B) the authors have developed a procedure for enzyme immunoassay of this antigen in biological fluids. Blood sera of 15 children with Tourette's syndrome were examined by this method. The levels of alpha 2-B and the clinical picture of the disease were found to correlate, which makes it possible to use an assay of alpha 2-B as a laboratory test for the diagnosis of Tourette's syndrome and for the monitoring of its treatment.

The plasma levels of the urate-binding alpha(1)-alpha(2)-globulin, as determined by its urate-binding capacity, have been recorded in 19 individuals from two gouty kindreds. INTRODUCTION: Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a hypersensitivity disorder in which tick bites-most commonly from the lone star tick (Ambylomma americanum)-trigger immunoglobulin E-mediated hypersensitivity reaction upon exposure to oligosaccharide galactosse-alpha-1,3-galactose (α-gal). α-gal is most notorious for being found in "red meat" products but is present in mammalian meats such as beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, and others. Manifestations of AGS hypersensitivity are variable. There is currently no in vivo data describing allergic reactions against rabbit products in patients with AGS.

Here, we report a familial spinocerebellar ataxia (FSCA), which has clinical features similar to Friedreich's ataxia, an ataxia with isolated vitamin E deficiency, and ataxia telangiectasia. However, the serum levels of creatine kinase, gamma-globulin, and alpha-fetoprotein were elevated, and biochemical and genetic analyses ruled out diagnosis of these three ataxias as well as other FSCAs. Thus, this family is thought to have a new type of FSCA.

METHODS: Time courses of the serum concentrations of two brain-specific proteins (BSP), alpha(1) brain globulin (alpha(1)BG, an astroglial marker) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE), were studied in patients with severe tick-born encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme disease (LD; neuroborreliosis). Total serum protein, albumin, globulin, globulin fractions (alpha, beta and gamma globulins) and an acute-phase protein (alpha1-acid glycoprotein) were evaluated in dogs with naturally occurring mild (Group 1), severe (Group 2) or complicated babesiosis (Group 3). Significant alterations in serum protein of mice following Hymenolepis nana infection were observed.
