James Douglas (1675-1742) is considered one of the most important anatomists of the eighteenth century; he introduced meticulous and scientific methods for studying human anatomy. He is known for the "pouch of Douglas," but his contribution is much more important. He deepened our knowledge of the anatomy of the peritoneum, located new muscles, and evolved the already recorded knowledge in a way that it could be implemented in surgery. Furthermore, he was such a famous obstetrician that even the Pope of his era admired him for his charisma.

Adolph Hannover (1814-94), Danish anatomist and pathologist, introduced the microscopy to the medical research in Denmark. He published several papers on anatomy and pathology, among others Om Mikroskopets Bygning og dets Brug (1847) which was translated to several European languages, among others to English On the structure of the microscope and its use. As a jew he never succeeded in obtaining a post at the University of Copenhagen, Ib Pedersen Ibsen (1801-62) was educated at the Academia Chirurgorium Regia, the college of surgeons in Copenhagen, and he never became a scholarly anatomist, wr

Grajales came to Chile in December 1807, noting that since 1805 smallpox vaccination had been introduced by Fray Pedro Manuel Chaparro, supported by the Councilor Nicholas Matorras. He founded the Vaccination Boards of Valparaiso and Santiago in 1808 and became professor of anatomy and surgery in 1819. In 1823 he received his authorization to practice medicine. He wanted to finish his medical studies at the University of San Marcos in Lima, but the war of Independence made this impossible. He returned to Spain in 1825. In 1848, he became Member of Honor of the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad

The high incidence of hepato-biliary vascular anatomy variations necessitates its evaluation prior to performing liver transplantation, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, gastric and oesophageal surgeries. We report a unique case of persistence of embryonic arteries of the liver, wherein, the liver was supplied by five vessels. In addition to the usual right and left hepatic arteries from the hepatic artery proper, the liver received two accessory right hepatic arteries, one from the gastroduodenal artery, while another arising from superior mesenteric artery and an accessory left hepatic artery, from

William Rutherford Sanders spent a childhood and early student days divided between Edinburgh and Montpelier, France before graduating in Medicine in Edinburgh. An early interest in the spleen was encouraged by a two-year period in Europe where he became familiar with the work of Helmholtz, Bernard and Henle. Returning to Edinburgh, his growing experience led to the position of assistant in the Infirmary pathology department. He conducted classes in the University of Edinburgh and on behalf of the Royal Colleges became familiar with the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons where he was chos

Vincenc Alexandr Bohdálek (Vincenz Alexander Bochdalek) was a well-known anatomist and pathologist in the nineteenth century. Today, however, his name is all but forgotten. Bohdálek described a number of anatomical structures; some of them became eponyms. Unfortunately, his findings concerning the innervation of the eye, upper jaw, hard palate, auditory system, and meninges are little known today. This current overview is based on available archival sources and provides an insight into his results in the field of nervous system research, which account for almost half his work. Bohdálek can cle

The brachial plexus, a complex network of nerves responsible for innervating the upper limb, exhibits remarkable anatomical variations. This editorial explores the composite drawing of a "typical" brachial plexus portrayed by Abram T. Kerr in 1918. This composite drawing of the typical brachial plexus stands as a critical contribution to the field of anatomy and surgery, and encapsulates the most prevalent patterns of formation, branching, and origins within the brachial plexus, offering a statistical map of its common variants. Kerr portrays the typical brachial plexus as a foundational resou

Peripheral nerve injuries of the hand are common; however, exteriorization of a nerve fascicle following minor trauma is exceedingly rare. We present the case of an 80-year-old female who sustained a cat scratch to the dorsum of the hand, resulting in extrusion of a threadlike structure later confirmed to be neural tissue. Initial management included conservative wound care and submission of the specimen as a presumed foreign body. Due to limited clinical information, the specimen underwent gross examination only and was nearly discarded. Following direct communication with pathology, frozen s

This article commemorates the life and works of Marius Fahrer MD (Bucharest), MB, BS(Qld), FRACS, FAFRM, possibly one of the last few Australian 'surgeon-anatomists' whose career brought together anatomical scholarship, hand surgery and surgical education. Born in Bucharest in 1927, Fahrer emigrated to Australia via Paris in 1963 as a political refugee. Despite challenges with medical registration and limited English, he secured a position at the University of Queensland after an unusual interview with Professor Max Hickey, conducted largely in Latin. Fahrer subsequently requalified medically

Born on April 15, 1452, in a modest family in a hamlet from Tuscany, Leonardo da Vinci became the unassailable icon of Renaissance. Pushed throughout his entire life by his relentless curiosity, he was a painter, draughtsman, sculptor, poet, musician, writer, engineer, stage designer, architect, physicist, astronomer, cartographer and anatomist. His earliest surviving anatomical drawings (ca. 1485-1493) include studies of the skull, meninges, brain and cerebral ventricles. He was the first to pith a frog, concluding that piercing the spinal medulla will result in immediate death - a completely

Wilhelm Waldeyer was anatomist, physiologist, and pathologist during the German Empire (the so-called Second Reich). His scientific career left many traces still noticeable today. Not only is he commemorated in "his" pharyngeal lymphoid ring and other eponyms, but he also coined an impressive range of successful medical terms, including "chromosome" and "neuron." Moreover, Waldeyer left truly physical traces by donating parts of his body to his own Institute of Anatomy in Berlin. His scientific production does, however, also include "pseudoscientific" works, notably his questionable research o

The Wittenberg physician Konrad Victor Schneider (1614-1680) was the first to prove that mucus is not formed in the brain, nor is it secreted into the nasal cavity via the ethmoid bone. He recognised that there is no open anatomical connection between the brain and the nasal air space. Schneider discovered the sinonasal mucosa as the production site of mucus and thus refuted the hypothesis of cerebral mucus production and secretion by Hippocrates, Galen and Vesal. The nasal mucosa was named "membrana Schneideria" in honour of Schneider.

By the end of the 15th century, syphilis had reached epidemic proportions in Europe. Unable to ascertain its causes, physicians resorted to superstition. At the beginning of the 16th century, the sexual transmission of the disease was established. Initially, the principal measure of infection control was sexual abstinence and mutual fidelity. However, during the same period the Italian anatomist Gabriele Falloppio (1523-1562) proposed a method of preventing syphilis transmission: the medication-soaked linen sheath. Thus was born the idea of a mechanical barrier against sexually transmitted dis

PURPOSE: Hermann Stieve (1886-1952), director of the Berlin Anatomical Institute from 1935, benefited from the rise of execution numbers during the "Third Reich". He used organs and tissues from executed women for his histological research on the reproductive organs and investigated the influence of "nervous agitation" on the cyclical changes of endometrium and ovary. It is still controversial how he was able to acquire intimate data on the executed women and it was therefore suggested that some of his data may have been "invented".
METHODS: Newly emerged dissection protocols and histological

This article focuses on Antonio de Gimbernat y Arbós (1734-1816), with particular attention paid to his famous publication "Nuevo método de operar en la hernia crural" (2013 marking its 220 anniversary), which was translated into English by Thomas Beddoe two years later (A new method of operating for the femoral hernia Translated from the Spanish of Don Antonio de Gimbernat, To which are added, with plates by the translator, queries respecting a safer method of performing inoculation).
