BACKGROUND: Hypertension is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and a worldwide problem. Despite increases in the development of synthetic drugs for hypertension treatment, the rate of untreated and uncontrolled hypertension remains high. These drugs are effective, but can also cause side effects. Approximately 80% of the world population uses herbal medicines because of their low toxicity and better acceptability by the human body. Therefore, we attempted to identify natural medications for treating hypertension. The 70% ethanol extract of Angelica decursiv

Myelosuppression is a major adverse effect of chemotherapy. With the increasing number of cancer patients worldwide, there is a growing interest in therapeutic approaches that reduce the adverse effects of chemotherapy. Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN) roots have been widely used in oriental medicine to treat blood-related diseases, including cancer. However, the effects of AGN on myelosuppression have not been studied. Here, we investigated the effects of AGN ethanol extract (AGNEX) on cyclophosphamide-induced myelosuppression. AGNEX treatment significantly decreased white blood cell levels while i

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a dangerous human pathogen and no antiviral drugs have been approved to date. The chalcones are a group of small molecules that are found in a number of different plants, including Angelica keiskei Koidzumi, also known as ashitaba. To examine chalcone anti-ZIKV activity, three chalcones, 4-hydroxyderricin (4HD), xanthoangelol (XA), and xanthoangelol-E (XA-E), were purified from a methanol-ethyl acetate extract from A. keiskei. Molecular and ensemble docking predicted that these chalcones would establish multiple interactions with residues in the catalytic and allosteric si

The bioactivity of ten traditional Korean Angelica species were screened by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) assay in vitro. Among the crude extracts, the methanol extract of Angelica decursiva whole plants exhibited potent inhibitory effects against ACE. In addition, the ACE inhibitory activity of coumarins 1-5, 8-18 was evaluated, along with two phenolic acids (6, 7) obtained from A. decursiva. Among profound coumarins, 11-18 were determined to manifest marked inhibitory activity against ACE with IC50 values of 4.68-20.04 µM. Compounds 12, 13, and 15 displayed competitive inhibition again

The effects of angelica essential oil in three assays predictive of anxiolytic activity in male mice were studied, with diazepam as a positive anxiolytic control. In the elevated plus-maze test, compared to the positive control diazepam, angelica essential oil (30.0 mg/kg, PO) had a modest anxiolytic-like effect (increased the percentage of open-arm time and reduced the percent protected head dips). In the light/dark test, angelica essential oil (30.0 mg/kg) prolonged the time spent in the light area without altering the locomotor activity of the animals. In the stress-induced hyperthermia tes

Herbal adulteration has become a common malpractice, often undertaken to increase the weight or perceived potency of medicinal products or to reduce production costs. Consequently, the development of effective methods for detecting and preventing herbal adulteration is of critical importance. Angelica sinensis root is a well-known medicinal and edible plant with diverse pharmacological activities. However, owing to its increasing demand and market price, various adulterants have emerged, among which Angelica pubescens root is one of the most prevalent. The identification of A. sinensis becomes

Fibrosis-related diseases (FRD) include conditions like myocardial fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis, hepatic fibrosis, renal fibrosis, and others. The impact of fibrosis can be severe, causing organ dysfunction, reduced functionality, and even organ failure, leading to significant health issues. Currently, there is a lack of effective modern anti-fibrosis drugs in clinical practice. However, Chinese medicine has a certain beneficial effect on the treatment of such diseases. Angelica sinensis, with its considerable medicinal value, has garnered attention for its anti-fibrosis properties in recent i

Angelica sinensis is an alpine medicinal plant that has been widely used as a general blood tonic and gynecological indications over 2000 years, which depend on the bioactive metabolites (e.g., volatile oils, organic acids, and flavonoids). Although the accumulation of these metabolites is significantly affected by the environmental factors (e.g., altitude, temperature, and sunshine) as found in previous studies, the regulatory mechanism of different lights has not been clearly revealed. Here, growth parameters, contents of bioactive metabolites, and expression levels of related genes were exa

It is very difficult to identify Angelicae sinensis radix (Danggui) when it is processed into Chinese patent medicines. The proposed internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) is not sufficient to resolve heavily processed materials. Therefore, a short barcode for the identification of processed materials is urgently needed. In this study, 265 samples of Angelicae sinensis radix and adulterants were collected. The ITS2 region was sequenced, and based on one single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) site unique to Angelica sinensis, a nucleotide signature consisting of 37-bp (5'-aatccgcgtc atcttagtga gctca

The genus Angelica L. (Apiaceae) is mainly distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere and comprises approximately 110 species. Although several molecular phylogenetic studies have been conducted on this genus, the leaf micromorphology has not been sufficiently explored. In this study, we examined the leaf micromorphological characteristics of all the 16 Korean Angelica taxa using light and scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed considerable variation in the morphology of stomatal complexes, epidermal cells, and trichomes. Leaf epidermal cells were generally irregular in shape,
