Designed for the enhancement of structure mechanostability and strength: Suture-serrate margins of bivalve shells.

Through biological evolution, bivalve mollusks developed shells to improve the utilization of metabolic energy and provide protection against external threats. In addition to the mechanical optimization of the microstructure, the design of the macroscopic shape of a bivalve shell naturally becomes a potential approach to achieving the aforementioned purposes. While the functions of some features of mollusk shells have been studied, the role of the suture-serrate margins, a common morphology of bivalve shell edges, in the global mechanical behaviors of bivalve shells requires further exploratio

Vasculature of the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus: Pathways for Diffusible Output Signals.

Transplant studies demonstrate unequivocally that the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) produces diffusible signals that can sustain circadian locomotor rhythms. There is a vascular portal pathway between the SCN and the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis in mouse brain. Portal pathways enable low concentrations of neurosecretions to reach specialized local targets without dilution in the systemic circulation. To explore the SCN vasculature and the capillary vessels whereby SCN neurosecretions might reach portal vessels, we investigated the blood vessels (BVs) of the core and shell SCN. T

Screening of anti-liver fibrosis peptides from turtle shell protein using two-enzyme hydrolysis by molecular docking.

Turtle shell as a food residue of Pelodiscus sinensis (a type of edible aquatic animal) is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for hepatic fibrosis therapy. Previous studies have demonstrated that the peptides (<6 kDa) derived from turtle shells are considered effective components. The protein of turtle shells has important potential as a source of bioactive peptides which may play a role as ingredients in functional foods. In the present study, the protein of turtle shell was hydrolyzed using a two-enzyme combination. It was found that the hydrolysates obtained by a combination of pep

Effects of intraaccumbens amphetamine on production of 50 kHz vocalizations in three lines of selectively bred Long-Evans rats.

Effects of direct injections of amphetamine into the shell of the nucleus accumbens were studied in three lines of Long-Evans rats, two of which had been selected for low and high rates of 50 kHz calls in adolescence in response to a standard social stimulation, and compared to results from randomly selected rats. Injections of amphetamine into the medial shell of the nucleus accumbens significantly increased the number of 50 kHz vocalizations in the high line but not low line, as compared to the random controls. This response was shell specific and antagonized by raclopride. Rats of the high

Vibrio cholerae Colonization of Soft-Shelled Turtles.

Vibrio cholerae is an important human pathogen and environmental microflora species that can both propagate in the human intestine and proliferate in zooplankton and aquatic organisms. Cholera is transmitted through food and water. In recent years, outbreaks caused by V. cholerae-contaminated soft-shelled turtles, contaminated mainly with toxigenic serogroup O139, have been frequently reported, posing a new foodborne disease public health problem. In this study, the colonization by toxigenic V. cholerae on the body surfaces and intestines of soft-shelled turtles was explored. Preferred coloniz

Does microplastic exposure and sex influence shell selection and motivation in the common European hermit crab, Pagurus bernhardus?

Microplastics (<5 mm) are a threat to marine biodiversity however their effects on animal cognition and behaviour are unclear. We investigated whether microplastic exposure affects shell selection behaviour and motivation in the common European hermit crab, Pagurus bernhardus. Subjects were maintained for 5 days in tanks containing either: polyethylene microplastic spheres (n = 40), or no plastic (n = 40). They were then placed in low-quality shells and presented with an alternative high-quality shell. When they first touched the high-quality shell, the hermit crabs were startled using visual

Toxic shock-like syndrome in hens and its relationship to shell-less eggs.

Foreign materials were inserted into the hens' uteri and anti-inflammatory and immune suppressant drugs were used to determine possible causes of shell-less eggs. The presence of foreign shell-membranes and tampons in the uteri (shell glands) of hens caused a toxic shock-like syndrome ( TSLS ). Primary clinical signs were high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and death. The presence of other materials, including inflated rubber balloons, had no adverse affect on the hens. Calcium carbonate deposits occurred on the surface of the balloons but not on other material inserted into the uteri. Injection o

On two species of Aniptumnus Ng, 2002 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Pilumnidae) from India, with a description of a new species from the coast of Kerala.

The taxonomy of two species of Indian pilumnid crabs is treated herein. Heteropanope neolaevis Deb, 1985, originally described from northeastern India, is retained in the genus Aniptumnus Ng, 2002 as a valid species and removed from synonymy with Aniptumnus quadridentatus (De Man, 1895). A new species, Aniptumnus bijoyi, is described from southwestern India, based on distinguishing features in the carapace, thoracic sternum, pereopods and gonopods. With these developments, five species of Aniptumnus are now recognized.

Polarization properties in the scorpion's exoskeleton.

Scorpions are arthropods with a broad geographic distribution. They live in environments ranging from deserts to tropical rainforests. Several ecomorphotypes have evolved in scorpions, including species that live under stones or in leaf litter, burrow in hard soil, and move through sandy habitats. Besides the obvious external morphology, their exoskeletons could potentially reflect ecological adaptations through specialization to substrates and niches. While the polarimetric properties of other arthropods, such as beetles, have been studied to understand biological traits, there are no reports

"Nail Disease", an emerging syndrome in the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas cultivated in the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico: the challenge of determining its causal agent(s) and the importance of early warning.

In 2024, aquaculture producers reported unprecedented cases of shell malformations and mortality in Pacific oysters (Magallana gigas) in Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Due to the shell malformations, they named this condition "nail disease." Sixty oysters from the main affected location were used for shell, bacteriological, fungal, and histopathological analysis. Shell malformations may reach 90% of the surface. Bacteriological identification based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the presence of Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Flagellimonas marinaquae. Shell decalcification exposed o

Exploring new approach for resource utilization of crab shell waste: Optimized microwave torrefaction parameters and efficient self-desulfurization.

Finding alternative energy sources and reducing the impact of waste on the environment are pressing global challenges. Crab shells possess the dual characteristics of a pollutant and a resource; therefore, transforming them into clean energy is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed for reducing environmental pollution. This study uses microwave torrefaction to treat crab shell waste efficiently and optimizes the torrefaction conditions through response surface methodology to rapid prepare derived fuel. At a microwave power of 2500 W, temperature of 225 °C, and a treatment duration of 11 m

Ordered stereom structure in sea urchin tubercles: High capability for energy dissipation.

Tubercles in sea urchin shells serve as a base on the test plates connecting the spine; these undergo compressive or impact stress from the spines. As the volume fraction of the ordered stereom structure in a tubercle increases, the compressive load-displacement curves are gradually characterized by the typical behavior of ceramic foams. Although this ordered stereom structure only exhibits an average porosity of 50.6%, it also exhibits high fracture resistance and energy dissipation capacity. Such remarkable behavior of the ordered stereom structure is attributed to its unique hierarchical mi

First Atlantic satellite tracks of 'lost years' green turtles support the importance of the Sargasso Sea as a sea turtle nursery.

In-water behaviour and long-term movements of oceanic-stage juvenile sea turtles are not well described or quantified. This is owing to technological or logistical limitations of tracking small, fast-growing animals across long distances and time periods within marine habitats. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first long-term offshore tracks of oceanic green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in western North Atlantic waters. Using a tag attachment technique developed specifically for young (less than 1 year old) green turtles, we satellite-tracked 21 oceanic-stage green turtles (less than 19 cm

Friction reduction mechanism of the cuticle surface in the sandhopper talitrus saltator (Amphipoda, talitridae).

In many cases, strong friction reduction is critical for success of both living organisms and engineering systems. Some arthropods exhibit good antifriction abilities in their specific living environments and have inspired many innovations for solving industry challenges. However, the current literature mainly focused on terrestrial insects, such as beetles, grasshoppers and katydids. The antifriction mechanisms in amphibious arthropods are still unknown, even if their surfaces are optimized for both air and water environments. Herein the tribological properties of the cuticle surface of the s

Isolation of Rickettsia prowazekii from blood by shell vial cell culture.

A blood sample from a patient who returned from Algeria with a fever inoculated on human embryonic lung fibroblasts by the shell vial cell culture technique led to the recovery of Rickettsia prowazekii. The last clinical strain was isolated 30 years ago. Shell vial cell culture is a versatile method that could replace the classic animal and/or embryonated egg inoculation.

Eggshell structure in Caiman latirostris eggs improves embryo survival during nest inundation.

Egg inundation often results in poor hatching success in crocodylians. However, how tolerant eggs are to submergence, and/or how eggshell ultrastructure may affect embryo survival when inundated, are not well understood. In this study, our objective was to determine if embryo survival in Caiman latirostris is affected by eggshell surface roughness, when eggs are submerged under water. Tolerance to inundation was tested early (day 30) versus late (day 60) in development, using eight clutches (four per time treatments), subdivided into four groups: (N = 9 per clutch per treatment; 9 × 4 = 36 egg

Rigid removable cover for dorsal wound protection and tube fixation in pigs.

OBJECTIVE: To report the design and benefits of a rigid polyethylene cover 'shell' for the protection of dorsal torso wounds and tube fixation in pigs. METHODS: Open C-shaped polyethylene shells were designed to protect wounds and dressings on the dorsum of pigs used in research into negative pressure dressing-assisted wound healing. The shells were designed to resist trauma and contamination, to be comfortable and expansible, and to facilitate tube fixation and management. Strap fixation was optimised during experimentation. Efficacy was assessed by direct observation of dressing and wound p

Influence of the entorhinal cortex on accumbal and striatal dopaminergic responses in a latent inhibition paradigm.

The use of latent inhibition paradigms is one means of investigating the involvement of mesencephalic dopaminergic (DA) neurons in cognitive processes. We have shown recently that DA neurons reaching the core and the dorsomedial shell parts of the nucleus accumbens and the anterior part of the striatum are differentially involved in latent inhibition. In other respects, theoretical, behavioral and anatomo-functional data suggest that the entorhinal cortex (ENT) may control latent inhibition expression. In this study, using in vivo voltammetry in freely moving rats, we investigated the influenc
