BACKGROUND: Racism is a driver of community health disparities, and there is a dearth of evidence-based multilevel antiracism interventions developed in partnership with community constituents. Community-engaged systems science defines intervention points within complex systems and was utilized for early-phase multilevel intervention development within the ORBIT translational model to improve type 2 diabetes (T2DM) management among Black patients in the South.
METHODS: Group model-building sessions were conducted with five primary care physicians, thirteen nurses, six support staff, and nine

IMPORTANCE: The use of restorative practices may be an alternative approach to responding to patients and families harmed by medical racism. Little research has explored its implementation in health care settings or the perspectives of residents and fellows (ie, medical learners) regarding its use in academic clinical settings.
OBJECTIVE: To elicit perspectives from medical learners on using restorative practices to address patient and family concerns about racism and other identity-based harms in the health care context.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative study consisted of

Families with infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) experience high rates of perinatal mental health conditions, which are disproportionately experienced by families i) of minoritized racial identities; ii) with a primary language other than English (PLOE); and iii) of low socioeconomic status. Disparities in screening, diagnosis, and treatment for mental health conditions are complex. Multiple individual, interpersonal, institutional, and structural factors may negatively impact marginalized individuals. Multifaceted recommendations to address these challenges are in

As endocrinologists we have focused on biological contributors to disparities in diabetes, obesity and other endocrine disorders. Given that diabetes is an exemplar health disparity condition, we, as a specialty, are also positioned to view the contributing factors and solutions more broadly. This will give us agency in contributing to health system, public health, and policy-level interventions to address the structural and institutional racism embedded in our medical and social systems. A history of unconsented medical and research experimentation on vulnerable groups and perpetuation of eug

Aspiring antiracist White parents report feeling stuck and uncertain about how to socialize their young White children into antiracism. Most of the scholarship focused on this population, their ideas, and practices overlooks the intersection of their class positionalities with their attitudes and behaviors regarding antiracist parenting. The present study offers insights into the dynamics of class-related beliefs and antiracist socialization among middle- to upper-middle-class White parents. Using methods informed by critical thematic analysis, we interrogated the in-depth interviews of 19 Whi

This study examined how Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) described their experiences and impacts of COVID-19-related racism, contextualized in a broader history of sociopolitical oppression. Guided by Cheng, Kim, et al. (2021) tripartite model of collective psychosocial resilience, we further hypothesized that COVID-19-related racism might be a catalyst for AANHPIs developing critical consciousness to resist racism. AANHPI adults (n = 448; Mage = 26.43) were asked how their lives were impacted by anti-Asian racism during the COVID-19 pandemic and completed sur

INTRODUCTION: Elevating Voices, Addressing Depression, Toxic Stress and Equity (EleVATE) is a group prenatal care (GC) model designed to improve pregnancy outcomes and promote health equity for Black birthing people. This article outlines the foundational community-engaged process to develop EleVATE GC and pilot study results.
METHODS: We used community-based participatory research principles and the Ferguson Commission Report to guide creation of EleVATE GC. The intervention, designed by and for Black birthing people, centers trauma-informed care, antiracism, and integrates behavioral health

INTRODUCTION: The minority tax is an understudied phenomenon by which underrepresented in medicine (URiM) physicians are more often responsible for nonpromotable activities: mentorship, education, outreach, and committee service. This review aims to summarize definitions of minority tax, explore its possible impact in academic surgery, and present gaps in the literature.
METHODS: A systematic search across SCOPUS, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ERIC, and PsycINFO was conducted. Original research articles studying URiM individuals in academic medicine/surgery were eligible. A priori outcomes of interest wer

INTRODUCTION: There is a research gap on how racism impacts the mental health of midwives in Ontario. Our aim was to conceptualize the impact of racism on racialized midwives in Ontario.
METHODS: Informed by constructivist grounded theory, we analyzed data contributed by racialized midwives in Ontario who participated in focus groups and interviews as part of a larger study about mental health. Participants had practiced midwifery within the past 15 months.
RESULTS: Seven participants from 2 focus groups and one individual interview were included. Our conceptualization, Hypervigilance: Being

The exposure and impact of racism are a critical issue among historically marginalized youth of color that requires targeted interventions. The goal of this paper is to examine initial feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness from a school-based intervention pilot study designed to increase awareness and skills to combat the consequences of racism, in all forms, among adolescents from Black, Native, Asian, Latine, and other historically marginalized communities. TRANSFORM is an 11-session group-based intervention. Fifteen youth (Mage = 15.3 years old, SDage = 1.8 years old; 53

Culturally safe, racism-free healthcare is essential in Australia, yet Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to face inequitable access, experiences and outcomes. Although cultural safety is widely cited, implementation remains shallow and disconnected from patients' realities. We argue that meaningful cultural safety requires Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander governance, robust measurement and institutional accountability. Evidence shows that culturally unsafe care, including racism, creates psychological distress, leads to care avoidance and results in poorer outcomes, wh

Objective: This study expands the literature on risk taking among college students by exploring anti-racism action as a form of positive risk taking. Participants: 346 Black (64%) and Latinx (36%) college students (85% female) ages 18-27 years (M = 18.75, SD = 1.31). Methods: Participants responded to questionnaires on anti-racism action, health-risk taking, and college functioning. Latent class analysis identified behavioral profiles of risk takers. Indicators of profile membership and associations with college functioning were examined. Results: Three profiles emerged: moderate overall risk

In 1987, the National Association of Black and White Men Together (NABWMT) received funding to create the National Task Force on AIDS Prevention, the first federally funded organization to do HIV/AIDS prevention directed to Black gay and bisexual men. This article is based on a narrative ethnography of NABWMT, including analysis of ten years of newsletters, 36 oral history interviews, and organizational documents from five different archives, and focuses on the narrative production of the task force. My analysis demonstrates how the task force initially positioned itself as part of NABWMT, nar

White young adults in the United States often face challenges in developing anti-racist values and commitments, given that their distal and proximal contexts of development are fundamentally shaped by racist ideologies, such as white normativity and supremacy. Yet little is known about how some white young adults, despite these challenges, form life goals centered on social justice and racial justice-defined here as critical purpose. Drawing on frameworks of ethnic-racial identity, white racial identity development, and critical consciousness, this study investigated how white racial identity

OBJECTIVES: Evidence for the impact of racial implicit bias and clinical reasoning remains conflicting. Our inability to characterize the relationship between racial implicit bias and clinical reasoning (CR) precludes development of comprehensive interventions seeking to address the impact of racial implicit bias on clinical encounters. To address this gap, we conducted a simulation-based investigation with clinical presentations with known health disparities, cognitive stressors common to clinical environments, and Black and White standardized patients (SPs).
METHODS: We recruited 75 early-c

INTRODUCTION: A Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program used Restorative Practices (RP) to address an incidence of widespread academic dishonesty. This study sought to understand the perceptions and experiences of DPT program graduates and faculty involved in the RP process and identify aspects of RP that could and should be moved forward in DPT education.
REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Applications of RP can be found in a variety of health care and educational environments, including academic medicine, to address behavior, manage conflict, promote antiracism, and support community building. Acad

BACKGROUND: Growing recognition of racism perpetuated within academic institutions has given rise to anti-racism efforts in these settings. In June 2020, the university-based California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi) committed to an Anti-Racism Action Plan outlining an approach to address anti-Blackness. This case study assessed perspectives on PTBi's anti-racism efforts to support continued growth toward racial equity within the initiative.
METHODS: This mixed methods case study included an online survey with multiple choice and open-ended survey items (n = 27) and key informant interviews
