In vitro efficacy of aquaculture antimicrobials and genetic determinants of resistance in bacterial isolates from tropical aquaculture disease outbreaks.

Understanding the efficacy of antimicrobials against pathogens from clinical samples is critical for their responsible use. The manuscript presents in vitro efficacy and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in seven species of fish pathogens from the disease outbreaks of Indian aquaculture against oxytetracycline, florfenicol, oxolinic acid, and enrofloxacin. In vitro efficacy was evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration. The gene-specific PCR screened AMR genes against quinolones (qnrA, qnrB, and qnrS) and tetracyclines (tetM, tetS, tetA, tetC, tetB

Experimental biofilm vaccines for fish aquaculture: an overview.

Biofilm vaccines in fish are a trending approach to fighting bacterial diseases. Pathogens, including Aeromonas spp., Vibrio spp., Photobacterium spp., and Streptococcus spp., have been studied for planktonic- and biofilm-derived vaccines. These vaccines have demonstrated safe immunogenicity through the induction of phagocytosis, innate-immune related gene expression, and specific antibodies. Remarkably, protective outcomes range from 77 to 100% in several fish species upon challenges by disrupting biofilm formation, compared to planktonic-derived vaccines that have reached around 30% protecti

Vitamin D3 as an antimicrobial and antiviral immunonutrient in aquaculture.

Bacterial and viral diseases continue to remain major problem in aquaculture, and the growing limitations on the use of antibiotics have intensified a growing focus on host-directed nutrition-based disease management strategies. While vitamin D3 (VD3) has been recognized for its role in calcium-phosphorus metabolism, it is now increasingly recognized to exert an immunonutrient role in fish, which includes modulation of antimicrobial peptide production, inflammatory regulation, epithelial barrier integrity, oxidative homeostasis, microbiota-associated immune interactions, and antiviral signalin

Global nutritional equity of fishmeal and aquaculture trade flows.

Aquaculture, the single fastest growing food sector, is central to achieving key Sustainable Development Goals (e.g., SDG 2: Zero Hunger). Linking the nutrient composition of >2,800 aquatic species with >2 million fishmeal and farmed fish transactions in international aquatic food trade between 2015 and 2019, we examined aquaculture's nutritional flows and distributional equity. We found that aquaculture provided adequate intakes for nearly a quarter of a million individuals, on average, across 14 key nutrients, and for up to 2.7 billion individuals for several nutrients, such as Vitamin B12.

Aquaculture Pathogens and Antimicrobial Resistance: A One Health Perspective.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a critical global health concern that transcends human, animal, and environmental boundaries. The extensive and often indiscriminate use of antibiotics for disease control and growth promotion has accelerated the evolution and spread of resistant pathogens within the aquaculture sector. This review examines aquaculture-associated AMR through a One Health framework. We explore the molecular mechanisms of resistance such as efflux pumps, enzymatic degradation, mobile genetic elements, and horizontal gene transfer that drive the dissemination of antim

Ecological Drivers of Plasmid-Mediated Antimicrobial Resistance in Aquaculture.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global challenge that compromises the effectiveness of disease control and increases risks for both human and animal health. Aquaculture systems are particularly vulnerable, as extensive and often inappropriate antimicrobial use has driven the emergence and persistence of multidrug-resistant bacteria. This mini-review summarizes the ecological and genetic mechanisms underlying AMR in aquaculture, with emphasis on plasmid-mediated resistance and its role in horizontal gene transfer. It also addresses the broader environmental and public health implica

Coastal aquaculture in Bangladesh: Sundarbans's role against climate change.

The Sundarbans, a natural shield on earth, is one and only place that has many noteworthy environmental and geographical values with breathtaking natural beauties. Near the Sundarbans area, proliferation of aquaculture in this delta contributes appreciably to the national economy. Although aquaculture has become a means of daily livelihood, this sector is nevertheless threatened by a complex of climate change impacts. Cyclones, rising temperatures, rising sea levels, coastal flooding, and erosion make coastal farming difficult. As a panacea, the Sundarbans can play a critical role in preservin

Applying genetic technologies to combat infectious diseases in aquaculture.

Disease and parasitism cause major welfare, environmental and economic concerns for global aquaculture. In this review, we examine the status and potential of technologies that exploit genetic variation in host resistance to tackle this problem. We argue that there is an urgent need to improve understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved, leading to the development of tools that can be applied to boost host resistance and reduce the disease burden. We draw on two pressing global disease problems as case studies-sea lice infestations in salmonids and white spot syndrome in shrimp. We review

Salmon lice--impact on wild salmonids and salmon aquaculture.

Salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, are naturally occurring parasites of salmon in sea water. Intensive salmon farming provides better conditions for parasite growth and transmission compared with natural conditions, creating problems for both the salmon farming industry and, under certain conditions, wild salmonids. Salmon lice originating from farms negatively impact wild stocks of salmonids, although the extent of the impact is a matter of debate. Estimates from Ireland and Norway indicate an odds ratio of 1.1:1-1.2:1 for sea lice treated Atlantic salmon smolt to survive sea migration com

Genetics and Genomics of Infectious Diseases in Key Aquaculture Species.

Diseases pose a significant and pressing concern for the sustainable development of the aquaculture sector, particularly as their impact continues to grow due to climatic shifts such as rising water temperatures. While various approaches, ranging from biosecurity measures to vaccines, have been devised to combat infectious diseases, their efficacy is disease and species specific and contingent upon a multitude of factors. The fields of genetics and genomics offer effective tools to control and prevent disease outbreaks in aquatic animal species. In this study, we present the key findings from
