Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are ailments affecting the jaws and allied structures, resulting in many pathologies (TMJ hypermobility, internal disc derangement, bone changes, degenerative disorders, and ankylosis). Pain, clicking or crepitus, restricted range of motion, deranged jaw function, and deflected or deviated mouth opening and closing are the commonly observed manifestations in TMDs. Internal derangement refers to an aberrant relation of the articular disc to the condyle and fossa, respectively. Conventional therapies highlight the role of non-invasive conservative treatme

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) cover a wide spectrum of disorder; myalgic, arthralgic and psychogenic. The procedure of TMJ arthrocentesis has a role in managing patients with arthralgic pain and limitation if they fail to respond to non-surgical therapy.
METHOD: The patient records of a single private specialist OMS were searched over the 9-year period of 2006-2014 to identify patients who had arthrocentesis as part of their multidisciplinary management. The detailed demographic, diagnosis, pre and post arthrocentesis procedure were identified and put on a database. Appropriat

BACKGROUND: Identification of fluid in the elbow joint by physical examination alone can be challenging. Ultrasound can assist in the diagnosis of elbow effusion, and guide aspiration of the effusion.
OBJECTIVES: We illustrate the anatomy and ultrasound guidance technique of a posterior approach to elbow arthrocentesis using examples of normal and pathologic elbow joint ultrasound images.
DISCUSSION: The posterior distal humerus at the level of the olecranon fossa provides an excellent acoustic window into the joint space. This location also provides a safe path for the performance of ultras

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of dexamethasone administration following arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with a placebo (saline). Twenty-eight participants with TMJ arthralgia were randomly assigned to two groups of a parallel double-blind RCT. In both groups, an arthrocentesis procedure was carried out. In one group, the procedure was followed by the administration of a single-dose intra-articular dexamethasone. In the other group, saline was administered as a control. Follow-up visits were scheduled after 1, 3, and 24 weeks. During each visit, TMJ

Internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are characterized by displacement of the intra-articular disc, which acts as an obstacle to normal joint movement and results in clicking and popping sounds or locking and an inability to open the mouth widely. These conditions may be painless or they may be associated with pain, especially during function. The most common causes are trauma, which results in an immediate displacement of the disc, or chronic parafunction, which results in degenerative changes in the articular surfaces, increased friction, and gradual disc displacement.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint disorders are important oral health problems, reducing the quality of life of sufferers. It has been estimated that approximately 20% to 30% of the adult population will experience temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Arthrocentesis and lavage has been used to treat temporomandibular joint disorders for about 10 years, but the clinical effectiveness of the therapy has not been summarized in the form of a systematic review.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and complications of arthrocentesis and lavage for the treatment of temporomandibular joint diso

The understanding of the pathogenesis of TMJ disorders is increased by arthroscopic techniques; especially the prominent role of cartilage degeneration has become visible. During arthroscopy a clear view is produced of the different joint surfaces, the anatomic relationship between articular disc and mandibular condyle, and the degree of cartilage degeneration. Arthroscopic surgery results in pain relief, increased joint mobility and function improvement. The arthrocentesis technique is developed based upon the understanding of the underlying therapeutic mechanisms of arthroscopy. The therapeu

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis is a minimally invasive procedure for internal derangements and degenerative conditions. Although generally safe, rare but serious complications can occur, requiring clinical vigilance.
CASE: A 37-year-old male with bilateral TMJ osteoarthritis presented with severe pain (VAS 8/10), restricted opening (34 mm), and MRI-confirmed bilateral anterior disc displacement without reduction and effusion. After unsuccessful conservative therapy, he underwent three single-needle arthrocentesis sessions with intra-articular hyaluronic acid. Post-tr
