Hereditary neuropathy with upper motor-neuron, visual pathway, and autonomic disorders.

A 42-year-old man had progressive distal weakness and muscle atrophy, stocking-type sensory loss, upper motor-neuron and visual pathway lesions, and dysautonomia. Electrodiagnostic tests revealed a generalized sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy that largely involved axons. Low recumbent and upright norepinephrine levels implied a peripheral autonomic defect. Sural nerve biopsy showed mild abnormalities of medium and small size fibers. The patient's mother and two brothers were also affected. Other causes of peripheral motor, sensory, and autonomic failure were eliminated. This kinship does not

Innate sensing and cell-autonomous resistance pathways in Legionella pneumophila infection.

Legionella pneumophila is a facultative intracellular bacterium which can cause a severe pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease after inhalation of contaminated water droplets and replication in alveolar macrophages. The innate immune system is generally able to sense and -in most cases- control L. pneumophila infection. Comorbidities and genetic risk factors, however, can compromise the immune system and high infection doses might overwhelm its capacity, thereby enabling L. pneumophila to grow and disseminate inside the lung. The innate immune system mediates sensing of L. pneumophila by empl

Uroguanylin Action in the Brain Reduces Weight Gain in Obese Mice via Different Efferent Autonomic Pathways.

The gut-brain axis is of great importance in the control of energy homeostasis. The identification of uroguanylin (UGN), a peptide released in the intestines that is regulated by nutritional status and anorectic actions, as the endogenous ligand for the guanylyl cyclase 2C receptor has revealed a new system in the regulation of energy balance. We show that chronic central infusion of UGN reduces weight gain and adiposity in diet-induced obese mice. These effects were independent of food intake and involved specific efferent autonomic pathways. On one hand, brain UGN induces brown adipose tissu

Resistance training for migraine in females: mechanistic review of hormonal, CGRP, autonomic, vascular and nociceptive pathways.

Migraine is the second leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide and disproportionately affects women, in whom the disorder tends to be more frequent, longer-lasting and functionally more disabling than in men. This female preponderance, which emerges after menarche, is tightly linked to changes in estrogen levels, reproductive phases and sex-specific responsiveness of the trigeminovascular and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) systems. Against this backdrop, non-pharmacological interventions that modulate the same physiological processes involved in migraine are particularly

Autonomic and attentional pathways in the emergence of autism: bridging mechanisms and real-world contexts in infancy.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) unfolds over the first two years of life through complex interactions among developmental systems. Attention and autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation represent foundational processes critical for adaptive engagement with the environment. Disruptions in these systems during early infancy may initiate developmental cascades that contribute to core ASD features, including social-communication challenges and restricted and repetitive behaviors, as well as the vast heterogeneity found within ASD. This chapter reviews our approach to integrating mechanistic resear

[Investigation of the vesical sphincter and genital-sexual autonomic pathways. Techniques, normal values, and application to pathology].

Parasympathetic and sympathetic pathways may be assessed by using different electrophysiologic tests. Sympathetic skin potentials (SSP) are elicited with peripheral electrical stimulation (e.g. median nerve or pudendal nerve). SSP are recorded from the skin of the hand and foot and from the genital skin. Skin responses were always obtained from normal volunteers. Absence of SSP is one of the earliest findings in neurogenic impotence. Electromyography of corpora cavernosa is described with a new method. A new corpora cavernosa response to pudendal nerve stimulation is described. This test appea

ATP-fueled autonomous pathway-selective signal transduction on DNA-nanostructure tracks.

Chemically fueled non-equilibrium self-assemblies offer a promising route toward constructing artificial living systems, yet current strategies lack molecular-level control over where such artificial non-equilibrium assemblies occur. Here, we present an ATP-fueled enzymatic reaction network comprising DNA ligase and nickase, concatenated with a hairpin chain reaction (HCR), enabling site-confined transient covalent HCR (cHCR). Anchoring the initiator strands on paramagnetic colloids enables fuel-driven cHCRs on the colloidal surfaces, while the resulting DNA polymers gradually degrade by termi

Ghrelin inhibits autonomic response to gastric distension in rats by acting on vagal pathway.

Ghrelin is the only orexigenic peptide currently known and a potent prokinetic by promoting gastric motility but novel insights suggest that its role extends beyond satiety regulation. Whereas ghrelin was shown to provide somatic and colonic antinociception, its impact on gastric sensitivity is unknown even though stomach is a major ghrelin secreting tissue. Autonomic response to gastric mechanosensitivity was estimated by measuring blood pressure variation as a surrogate marker in response to gastric distension (GD) before and after ghrelin (or vehicle) administration. Involvement of spinal a

[Role of the autonomic nervous system in the genesis of the electrophysiologic pattern of the double nodal pathway].

Thirty-five patients (age: 53 +/- 13 years) with dual A-V nodal pathways pattern were studied following autonomic blockade (propranolol 0.2 mg/kg and atropine 0.04 mg/kg). Six of them had "idionodal" paroxysmal reentrant supraventricular tachycardia. After autonomic blockade the dual A-V nodal pathways pattern remained in 20 patients (57%) and disappeared in 15; however, in the latter, the effective refractory period of the fast pathway decreased significantly and the disappearance of the slow pathway conduction may not have been real since the marked shortening of the fast pathway refractory

Cervico-suboccipital sensorimotor convergence as an upstream autonomic pathway in bilateral rhythmic stimulation.

Rhythmic bilateral stimulation is a defining procedural feature of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), yet its physiological significance remains unresolved. Existing accounts have mainly emphasized rapid cognitive and attentional mechanisms during traumatic memory processing, including working-memory taxation, dual attention, and reductions in memory vividness and emotionality. This Hypothesis and Theory article develops a complementary upstream physiological model that separates acute cognitive-attentional effects from proximal sensorimotor-autonomic coupling and slower dow

Vagal pathways and heart rate variability in recovery after caesarean delivery: a framework for multimodal autonomic-immune phenotyping.

Recovery after caesarean delivery involves interacting inflammatory, autonomic, neuroendocrine, nociceptive and psychosocial processes. This Mini Review examines whether vagal pathways and heart rate variability (HRV) can provide a mechanistic and measurable framework for studying that recovery. The inflammatory reflex and cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway offer a biological rationale: neural signals can restrain cytokine production through an autonomic-immune circuit that includes splenic sympathetic signalling, norepinephrine-responsive acetylcholine-producing T cells and the α7 nicotini

Research on atrial fibrillation mechanisms and prediction of therapeutic prospects: focus on the autonomic nervous system upstream pathways.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common clinical arrhythmia disorder. It can easily lead to complications such as thromboembolism, palpitations, dizziness, angina, heart failure, and stroke. The disability and mortality rates associated with AF are extremely high, significantly affecting the quality of life and work of patients. With the deepening of research into the brain-heart connection, the link between AF and stroke has become increasingly evident. AF is now categorized as either Known Atrial Fibrillation (KAF) or Atrial Fibrillation Detected After Stroke (AFDAS), with stroke as the

A pharmacological analysis of autonomic pathways mediating myocardial disturbances originating in a lateral hypothalamic area of the cat.

A study was made of the mechanisms mediating autonomic changes resulting from stimulation of a site in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA). This site, when stimulated, induced angina-like ECG disturbances similar to those observed in some cases of brain traumas. These ECG changes were often associated with other autonomic changes, such as pressor response, tachycardia (in some cases bradycardia), nictitating membrane (NM) contraction and pupillary dilatation. Most symptoms were sympathetic: they were largely abolished by spinal cord section between C1 and C2, but were not affected by vagotomy,

Cardiac and Brainstem Neuroinflammatory Pathways Account for Androgenic Incitement of Cardiovascular and Autonomic Manifestations in Endotoxic Male Rats.

Inconsistent reports are available on the role of testosterone in end-organ damage caused by endotoxemia. Here, pharmacologic, surgical, and molecular studies were employed to assess the testosterone modulation of cardiovascular, autonomic, and peripheral and central inflammatory derangements caused by endotoxemia. Studies were performed in conscious male rats preinstrumented with femoral indwelling catheters for the measurement of blood pressure and subjected to castration or pharmacologic interventions that interrupt the biosynthetic cascade of testosterone. Itaconate is an effector of a Rab GTPase cell-autonomous host defense pathway against Salmonella.

The guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) Rab32 coordinates a cell-intrinsic host defense mechanism that restricts the replication of intravacuolar pathogens such as Salmonella Here, we show that this mechanism requires aconitate decarboxylase 1 (IRG1), which synthesizes itaconate, a metabolite with antimicrobial activity. We find that Rab32 interacts with IRG1 on Salmonella infection and facilitates the delivery of itaconate to the Salmonella-containing vacuole. Mice defective in IRG1 rescued the virulence defect of a S. enterica serovar Typhimurium mutant specifically defective in its ability to

Time course and predictors of autonomic dysfunction after ablation of the slow atrioventricular nodal pathway.

Withdrawal of parasympathetic tone has been reported after ablation in the posteroseptal right atrium and has been attributed to injury of vagal efferent fibers. The purpose of this study was to assess the time course and predictors of autonomic dysfunction after slow pathway ablation. In 30 patients with AV nodal reentrant tachycardia, time- and frequency-domain measures of heart rate variability (HRV) were measured before, 30 minutes after, and 1 day after slow pathway ablation. There were significant reductions in mean RR interval (724 +/- 163 vs 836 +/- 164 ms, P < 0.05), SD of RR interval

An artificial somatic-autonomic reflex pathway procedure for bladder control in children with spina bifida.

PURPOSE: Neurogenic bladder is a major problem for children with spina bifida. Despite rigorous pharmacological and surgical treatment, incontinence, urinary tract infections and upper tract deterioration remain problematic. We have previously demonstrated the ability to establish surgically a skin-central nervous system-bladder reflex pathway in patients with spinal cord injury with restoration of bladder storage and emptying. We report our experience with this procedure in 20 children with spina bifida. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All children with spina bifida and neurogenic bladder underwent l

Electroacupuncture preconditioning at PC6 or ST36 alleviates myocardial inflammation and promotes M2 macrophage phenotypic polarization via distinct autonomic pathways.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture at different traditional acupuncture point locations activates different autonomic pathways and modulates systemic inflammation. Electroacupuncture preconditioning (EAP) at PC6 or ST36 has been demonstrated to be cardioprotective during acute myocardial ischemia (MI) injury, but the mechanism remains unclear. As inflammation is crucial for repair post-MI, we aimed to investigate whether the protective effect of EAP at PC6 or ST36 is related to the suppression of inflammation and whether autonomic pathways are involved. METHODS: Mice underwent ligation of the left anter
