Clinical experience with aztreonam in Germany and Austria.

Of 146 hospitalized patients treated with aztreonam for infections, primarily of the urinary and lower respiratory tracts, 142 had a satisfactory clinical response. An initial microbiologic cure was found in 106 (84%) of 126 patients. Relapse, reinfection, or superinfection occurred in 28 patients. Thirty-nine of 43 patients treated with a control drug (gentamicin, cefotaxime, cefamandole, or tobramycin) had a satisfactory clinical response, 25 of 34 such patients showed microbiologic cure, and 12 experienced relapse, reinfection, or superinfection. Efficacy of aztreonam in the treatment of neonatal sepsis.

In Greece the majority of infections that affect the neonatal population are caused by gram-negative bacteria rather than by group B streptococci as in the United States. The present study investigated the efficacy of aztreonam, a beta-lactam antibiotic that is effective against gram-negative organisms, in this population. Fifty-five neonates aged 2 hours to 36 days who had sepsis were enrolled in this open study. Laboratory tests were extensive, and follow-ups were detailed. Aztreonam (90-125 mg/[kg.d]) administered in two or three doses was given in combination with penicillin (100,000 U/[kg

Role of aztreonam in urinary tract infections.

Bacterial colonization is the necessary first step in the etiology of all urinary tract infections. The hospital setting provides a pool of pathogenic bacteria which may lead to colonization in the hospitalized patient. The nosocomial infections which may follow and require treatment most often follow catheterization. Some host factors often lead to persistence of colonization and invasive symptomatic disease. These might include stone, caliceal diverticula, a hydronephrotic kidney, vesicoureteral reflux, bladder neck obstruction with residual urine, urethral diverticula, and infection of the

Aztreonam therapy in neutropenic patients with cancer.

Combinations of aztreonam/vancomycin, aztreonam/vancomycin/amikacin, and moxalactam/ticarcillin were compared in a prospective randomized trial as empiric therapy for febrile neutropenic cancer patients. Vancomycin was added to aztreonam to provide coverage against gram-positive organisms. Of 535 febrile episodes included in the study, 455 were evaluable. The aztreonam/vancomycin and aztreonam/vancomycin/amikacin combinations were both more effective than the moxalactam/ticarcillin combination in a total of 244 episodes of documented infection. The difference was due to the fact that both aztr

Comparative in vitro activity of ceftazidime-avibactam plus aztreonam and the fixed combination aztreonam/avibactam against multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa is difficult to treat, despite some new beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors. A combination of ceftazidime-avibactam and aztreonam (CAZ/AVI + AZT) is frequently used to treat Gram-negative bacteria expressing metallo-beta-lactamases. A fixed combination of aztreonam/avibactam was recently licenced for use in Europe, but it remains unknown whether there are differences between both options for use against P. aeruginosa. This study evaluates the comparative in vitro efficacy of the fixed combination aztreonam/avibactam compared to the three

Treatment of serious gram-negative infections with aztreonam.

Aztreonam (SQ 26,776) is the first parenteral monobactam agent to be used in patient trials. The agent has significant activity in vitro against facultative aerobic gram-negative bacteria but not against gram-positive or anaerobic bacteria. Aztreonam was used for a year to treat 106 hospitalized patients with a total of 131 documented gram-negative infections. Important exclusion criteria included granulocytopenia, hyperbilirubinemia, meningitis, patients less than 13 years of age, pregnancy, and history of anaphylaxis to penicillin. In this study of 35 men and 71 women, there were 67 cases of

Aztreonam therapy for serious gram-negative bacillary infections.

Fifty episodes of gram-negative bacillary infection, including episodes of bacteremia, pneumonia, and skin and soft tissue, complicated urinary tract, and abdominal infections, were treated with aztreonam. Eighty-eight percent of patients were cured of their infection, including all nine patients with bacteremia and 15 of 17 patients with pneumonia. Thirty percent of all infections were caused by Pseudomonas, and all of these responded to treatment with aztreonam. A low incidence of toxicity and a high rate of efficacy make treatment with aztreonam as a single agent feasible. When gram-positiv
