The characteristics of keratomycosis by Beauveria bassiana and its successful treatment with antimycotic agents.

Clinical findings and treatment of keratomycosis caused by Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic filamentous fungus, are described for an 80-year-old woman, who was referred to the hospital for ocular pain and redness on the 9th day after an ocular injury caused by the frame of her glasses. She had a long history of recurrent diabetic iritis and continuously used topical antibiotics and corticosteroids. At her first visit, a slit-lamp examination indicated a corneal ulcer confined within the superficial stromal layer, along with a slight infiltration and edema. Only a very few inflammatory c

Genistein Mediates Beauveria bassiana-Induced Resistance Against Bemisia tabaci Reproduction in Tomato.

Endophytic colonization by entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana enhances plant resistance to herbivores; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms, particularly those involving hormonal disruption of pests, remain poorly understood. This study examined whether root inoculation of tomato with B. bassiana suppresses whitefly Bemisia tabaci fitness via flavonoid modulation. Metabolomic profiling of leaf tissues showed a 3.5-fold accumulation of the isoflavonoid genistein in B. bassiana-inoculated plants. KEGG enrichment analysis indicated significant upregulation of the isoflavonoid biosy

Evaluating Beauveria bassiana Strains for Insect Pest Control and Endophytic Colonization in Wheat.

Certain entomopathogenic fungi, such as Beauveria bassiana, are highly pathogenic to arthropod pests and are able to colonize plant tissues, thereby enhancing both plant growth and disease resistance. This study assessed three B. bassiana strains (CBM1, CBM2, and CBM3) for their pathogenicity toward insect larvae and colonization potential in wheat. The insecticidal activity of the fungi against the larvae of the major lepidopteran pests Helicoverpa armigera, Spodoptera frugiperda, Mythimna separata, and Plutella xylostella was determined. The fungi were then applied to wheat plants using seed

Characterization of three mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase-like proteins in Beauveria bassiana.

Pbs2, Mkk1 and Ste7 orthologs are three mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) kinases (MAPKKs) acting as checkpoints of the Hog1, Slt2 and Fus3 MAPK cascades that constitute major parts of fungal signaling network. Here, we show that three other MAPKK-like proteins (Mkk4/5/6) exist in Beauveria bassiana and other entomopathogenic or non-entomopathogenic fungi but lack in yeasts and aspergilli, and elucidate how they function in the fungal insect pathogen. Based on phenotypic defects of single-, double- and triple-deletion mutants, Mkk4, Mkk5 and Mkk6 played collaborative or independent roles

Evaluation of the Pathogenicity of Beauveria bassiana Biopesticide against Blattella germanica (Blattaria: Ectobiidae).

BACKGROUND: The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (Blattaria: Ectobiidae), is a worldwide urban pest. Due to limitations of conventional insecticides, alternative controls are needed. Entomopathogenic fungi-based biopesticides offer a promising solution. This study evaluated the pathogenicity of the indigenous Beauveria bassiana Rasht strain (Mcb18) against the German cockroach. METHODS: A laboratory colony of B. germanica was maintained under controlled conditions. The toxicity of four spore concentrations (1.5×102, 1.5×104, 1.5×106, 1.5×108 conidia/ml) of B. bassiana was evaluated again

Management of overwintering pine sawyer beetle, Monochamus alternatus with colonized Beauveria bassiana ERL836.

Monochamus alternatus is a major forest pest that spreads pine wilt disease in pine trees as a vector of pine wilt nematodes. Chemical insecticides used as fumigants to control overwintering M. alternatus in forests are highly toxic to the environment, so we investigated entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana ERL836 as an eco-friendly and alternative material to control overwintering M. alternatus. In this work, we evaluated the insecticidal activity of B. bassiana ERL836 against M. alternatus adults, the possibility of fungal colonization on pine tree bark, and finally the control efficac

Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Repel Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae).

The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bb) is used to control the red palm weevil (RPW) Rhyncophorus ferrugineus (Oliver). Beuveria bassiana can infect and kill all developmental stages of RPW. We found that a solid formulate of B. bassiana isolate 203 (Bb203; CBS 121097), obtained from naturally infected RPW adults, repels RPW females. Fungi, and entomopathogens in particular, can produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs from Bb203 were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). GC-MS identified more than 15 VOCs in B. bassiana not present in uninoculated (co

A Corneal Perforation Related to Beauveria Bassiana and Post-Penetrating Keratoplasty Management Discussion.

Fungal keratitis is an infection that is insidious and frequently misdiagnosed. Those with chronic eye surface conditions, contact lenses, systemic immunosuppression, and diabetes have been the most frequently affected with fungal keratitis. An 84-year-old male patient with a history of bilateral penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for keratoconus presented with pain and decreased visual acuity on his left eye. A corneal perforation was found, which was treated immediately with a full-thickness corneal transplant. The specimen was sent for bacterial and fungal cultures. Topical corticosteroids were

Silkworm storage protein Bm30K-19G1 has a certain antifungal effects on Beauveria bassiana.

Storage proteins in the 30 K family are ubiquitous in the hemolymph of insects and play important roles in adult metamorphosis, development, egg formation, carrier transport and even host immunity. Some studies have shown that the 30 K proteins can inhibit apoptosis and have certain antifungal effects. The silkworm protein Bm30K-19G1 is a low molecular weight apolipoprotein that is abundant in hemolymph of fifth instar larvae. Our previous transcriptome sequencing, real-time PCR analysis and proteomic studies showed that the expression level of the 30 K protein gene was significantly up-regula

Endophytic colonisation of opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, by an entomopathogenic Beauveria bassiana strain.

Beauveria bassiana strain EABb 04/01-Tip isolated from stem-borer larvae of Timaspis papaveris (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae), a serious pest of opium poppy in Spain, was shown to be able to become established endophytically in this pharmaceutical crop. Microbiological, molecular and light and electron microscopic methods were used to study fungal colonisation and to describe its mode of penetration. After inoculation with a foliar spray of conidia, microbiological methods showed 100% of plants examined 24, 48, 72 and 144 h after treatment to be colonised endophytically by the fungus, although the p

Biotin synthesis and assimilation are vital for pathobiology of the insect pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana.

Biotin is essential for metabolic processes. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that there was a gene cluster consisting of three biotin synthesis genes (BbBIOB, D, and F) in the insect pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. When the cluster was ablated, the protein biotinylation was significantly decreased, and the disruptant displayed phenotypic defects in radial growth, conidial germination, development, and virulence. However, exogenous biotin could restore the protein biotinylation and phenotypic defects. Notably, B. bassiana growth on asparagine (as nitrogen source) was independent of the b

Mycovirus prevalence is linked to increased virulence benefits in the fungal entomopathogen Beauveria bassiana.

Numerous studies have reported the occurrence of mycoviruses in fungal strains of medical-veterinary, phytopathological, and entomological relevance, with an expanding literature on their phenotypic effects. However, their prevalence within fungal populations remains poorly understood. If mycoviral infections were to confer adaptive advantages to their fungal hosts, positive selection could favour their persistence within fungal populations, potentially leading to an increased prevalence of beneficial viral symbionts. Addressing this gap is essential for improving mycovirus-based biocontrol st

Effects of Insect Cuticular Compounds on Appressorium Formation and Metabolic Activity in Beauveria bassiana.

The rate of appressoria formation following conidial germination in Beauveria bassiana is closely associated with its pathogenicity. This study investigated the effects of insect cuticular compounds on the formation and metabolism in B. bassiana through the addition of insect cuticle analogues. Results indicate that both the fatty acid compound carnitine C3:0 and the organic acid compound Thiamine Pyrophosphate (TPP) exert dose-dependent bell-shaped effects on B. bassiana spore germination and appressorium formation at different concentrations. Both low and high concentrations inhibit spore ge

Role of oxalic acid overexcretion in transformations of toxic metal minerals by Beauveria caledonica.

The fungus Beauveria caledonica was highly tolerant to toxic metals and solubilized cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc minerals, converting them into oxalates. This fungus was found to overexcrete organic acids with strong metal-chelating properties (oxalic and citric acids), suggesting that a ligand-promoted mechanism was the main mechanism of mineral dissolution. Our data also suggested that oxalic acid was the main mineral-transforming agent. Cadmium, copper, and zinc oxalates were precipitated by the fungus in the local environment and also in association with the mycelium. The presence of to

Beauveria bassiana GHA strain produces a plethora of chemical compounds under different culture conditions.

Entomopathogenic fungi produce chemical compounds that may provide different biological activities, and biotic and abiotic factors influence their production. This work aimed to determine the production of chemical compounds during the growth of the Beauveria bassiana GHA strain in nine different culture media. The media used were malt extract agar (MEA), potato dextrose agar (PDA), Spezieller Nahrstoffarmer agar (SNA), Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) enriched with yeast extract; yeast extract casein peptone dextrose agar (YEPDA), and potato dextrose-fungus (Agaricus bisporus) (PDF) as well as o

Cordyceps and Beauveria infections drive species-specific microbiome dysbiosis in the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

With the rising prevalence of vector-borne diseases and insecticide resistance in mosquitoes, alternative vector control strategies are urgently needed. Fungal entomopathogens offer a promising approach with a decreased likelihood of resistance development in mosquito populations. However, the mechanisms by which each fungus contributes to host mortality remain poorly understood, and the potential role of microbiome disruption as a secondary pathogenic mechanism has received limited attention. We evaluated the impact of four entomopathogenic fungal species (Beauveria bassiana, Cordyceps javani

Insect Gut Microbiota Diversity Reveals Differences in Pathogenicity Between Metarhizium rileyi and Beauveria bassiana.

Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium rileyi are entomopathogenic fungi that are widely present in nature. Due to their excellent insecticidal activity, they have been widely developed as microbial preparations and utilized in the biological control of pests. To clarify differences in pathogenicity between B. bassiana and M. rileyi against Spodoptera frugiperda, third-instar larvae were subjected to immersion treatments, whereas fifth-instar larvae were inoculated via injection with various doses of fungal strains B. bassiana AJS91881 and M. rileyi SXBN200920. Beauveria bassiana triggers the tomato 'cry for help' mechanism to assemble pest-suppressing rhizomicrobiome.

Plants can specifically assemble beneficial rhizosphere microbiota through the 'cry for help' mechanism triggered by non-pathogenic elicitors, thereby promoting plant health. However, it remains unknown whether non-pathogenic strains can be used to induce plants to form a rhizomicrobiome capable of resisting herbivores. Here, we investigated how tomatoes enhance their defense capacity via the 'cry for help' response triggered by the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. Our findings show that B. bassiana induces the formation of beneficial soil legacy in tomatoes, which significantly imp
