Novel Gel Formulations as Topical Carriers for the Essential Oil of Bidens tripartita for the Treatment of Candidiasis.

The genus Bidens L. (Asteraceae) refers to several species of plants used in traditional phytotherapeutic preparations. B. tripartita, also known as bur marigold, is the most familiar plant and has been known as a remedy for chronic dysentery. The hydrodistilled essential oil of the aerial parts of the Polish B. tripartita was analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques. To exclude any potential toxic effects of the oil on human dermal fibroblasts, the MTT test (methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium) and COMET assay (single-cell gel electrophoresis

First record of Culex (Culex) bidens (Diptera: Culicidae) in Colombia: Taxonomic and epidemiological implications.

Arbovirus transmission cycles must be studied locally since both vectors and hosts vary in different regions. Colombia has a highly diverse mosquito fauna. Culex (Culex) bidens is reported here for the first time in Colombia. Because Cx. bidens Dyar and Knab and Cx. declarator Dyar and Knab share a close taxonomic history and because it is difficult to differentiate between them, a morphological and molecular comparison was performed. The male genitalia of three specimens of Cx. bidens from Colombia were mounted on microscope slides and morphologically compared with the male genitalia of Cx. d

Health Security for All? Racial Discourse in Presidential Health Speeches from Roosevelt to Biden.

CONTEXT: Racial inequality remains a central, entrenched characteristic of American health and health care, and racial discourse strongly shapes health politics and policy. Despite this, discussions of race and health are rare in a core site of health policy making-the presidency-although this varies across historical periods and political parties. This study examines the prevalence and nature of racial discourse in 90 years of presidential health speeches, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Joe Biden, addressing in particular a debate about whether racial discourse rose or fell after the civil rig

Comparative hepatotoxicity of HFPO-TA and PFOA in Opsariichthys bidens: Greater liver injury induced by the PFOA alternative.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) has been introduced as a potential alternative to the environmentally persistent perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Despite its increasing application, there remains a substantial knowledge gap regarding its toxicological profile, especially in freshwater species such as the hook snout carp (Opsariichthys bidens Günther). To address this concern, we systematically evaluated and compared the hepatic toxicity of HFPO-TA and PFOA in O. bidens under uniform exposure durations for 60 days. HFPO-TA demonstrated a significantly greater capacity to induce li

Protective effects of total flavonoids of Bidens bipinnata L. against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis in rats.

Bidens bipinnata L. is well known in China as a traditional Chinese medicine and has been used to treat hepatitis in clinics for many years. In a previous study we found that total flavonoids of Bidens bipinnata L. (TFB) had a protective effect against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury in mice. Now this study was designed to investigate its therapeutic effect against CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in rats and to determine, in part, its mechanism of action. The liver fibrosis model was established by subcutaneous injection of 50% CCl4 twice a week for 18 weeks. TFB (40, 80 and

Gastric antisecretory and antiulcer activities of an ethanolic extract of Bidens pilosa L. var. radiata Schult. Bip.

Bidens pilosa var. radiata Schult. Bip. is used in folk medicine to treat stomach disorders including peptic ulcers. The ethanolic extract (0.5-2 g/kg) decreased the gastric juice volume, acid secretion, as well as pepsin secretion in pylorus ligated rats. B. pilosa extract showed antiulcer activity against indomethacin-induced gastric lesions. The extract effectively inhibited gastric haemorrhagic lesions induced by ethanol, and with an effective dose of 2 g/kg being more potent than sucralfate (400 mg/kg). In contrast, ranitidine (50 mg/kg) failed to reduce these lesions. These results indic

Effects of methanol, cyclohexane and methylene chloride extracts of Bidens pilosa on various gastric ulcer models in rats.

Ethnobotanical studies have revealed that Bidens pilosa is used in the traditional management of wounds and chronic gastro-duodenal ulcers. This led us to screen the methanol, cyclohexane and methylene chloride extracts of the plant for anti-ulcerogenic activity using the HCl/ethanol gastric necrotizing solution. The methylene chloride extract, which showed the highest activity (100% inhibition) at a dose of 750 mg/kg compared with the methanol and cyclohexane extracts (41 and 46% inhibition, respectively), was further tested using the indomethacin-HCl/ethanol-, absolute ethanol- and pylorus l
