The blood donor. In France, every year, 1.6 million people perform one or more voluntary blood donations. These 3 millions annual donations allow the preparation of labile blood products by the French blood establishment: concentrates of red blood cells, platelets, therapeutic plasma; as well as plasma-derived medicinal products by the laboratory of the French fractionation and biotechnologies laboratory: immunoglobulins, albumin, clotting factors. This article reviews the ethical and medical aspects of this social and humanitarian act that needs to be regulated to ensure the safety of both do

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Each donation of a single whole blood unit causes a 200-250mg iron loss. The main clinical manifestation of iron deficiency among blood donors is anemia, and every blood collection establishment must have measures in place to minimize and prevent iron depletion in blood donors, according to the European guidelines. However, iron deficiency without anemia is also associated with clinical manifestations. The management of iron deficiency is an acute issue; still, no consensus on its managements exists. One possibility is iron supplementation; however, the acceptability

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of defective platelets could contribute to the inefficiency of platelet transfusion in preventing or stopping bleeding.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This single-center prospective study aimed to determine the prevalence of functional platelet abnormalities in a population of blood donors with a clinical history of bleeding diathesis or with history of hematoma (>4 cm) during blood donation. Donors with positive bleeding screening questionnaire were referred to the reference center for rare platelet diseases at La Timone University Hospital (Marseille) to confirm the bleed

The prevention of anemia of blood donor is a main issue for donor safety and self-supplying. This prevention is done in one hand by donor deferral whose haemoglobin level is under defined threshold and in other hand by preventing iron deficiency. Some subgroups of donors are at increased risk for developing iron deficiency and adverse effects of iron deficiency: premenopausal females; donors with haemoglobin values near the minimum for eligibility and frequent donors. Different interventions could be used: lengthening the inter-donational interval and/or decreasing the number of donations per

The importance of an optimal diagnostic standard for the prevention of transfusion-associated AIDS (TAA) was recently enforced by a decision of our Supreme Court. Although only 18 transfusion-associated HIV infections following transfusion of approximately 30 million blood units were officially reported since 1985, HIV-1 p24 antigen testing of blood donors was introduced in Hamburg and by the Bavarian Red Cross in summer 1992. So far, no p24 antigen-positive, HIV antibody-negative blood donor has been found (May 1993).

The study of haemoparasites in our blood donors revealed the following parasite prevalences: microfilaria (mf) of Loa loa (1.3%); Dipetalonema perstans (15.6%); Loa loa and D. perstans (0.2%), Plasmodium falciparum (3.3%), Plasmodium malariae (1.0%) and a mixture of P. falciparum and P. malariae (0.2%). No trypanosomes were observed in the 480 blood samples screened. There were more cases of D. perstans infection in the 24-30 year age group, indicating their increased exposure frequencies. Matching of ABO blood group and mf infection rates shows that the O blood group has a higher prevalence r

Blood donor screening of viral markers in Poland is based on serologic testing for anti-HCV, HBsAg, anti-HIV1/2 (chemiluminescence tests) and on nucleic acid testing (NAT) for RNA HCV, RNA HIV-1 and DNA HBV performed in minipools of 6 with real-time PCR (MPX 2.0 test on cobas s201) or with TMA in individual donations (Ultrio Plus or Ultrio Elite). Donors of plasma for anti-D and anti-HBs production are tested for parvovirus B19 DNA. Before implementation tests and equipment are evaluated at the Institute of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine (IHTM). The last 20 years witnessed a decreasing tr

OBJECTIVES: Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a transfusion-transmissible virus. To obtain data about the prevalence, incidence, the course of B19V infection in blood donors and whether B19V might impair their blood counts, samples from blood donors with B19V infection were investigated.
METHODS: Blood donations were screened for B19V DNA using the Cobas TaqScreen DPX Test® in mini-pools. B19V DNA concentration, anti-B19V IgG antibody titer and blood counts were determined in positive donors.
RESULTS: 157/23,889 (0.66%) donors provided 347 B19V DNA-positive samples. Prevalence of B19V infection was 0

A study of 1262 city blood donors showed that they are significantly different from the urban population eligible to donate. City blood donors are youthful and live in middleclass suburbs, donating in relation to work. Men predominate (1.3:1) and donate for longer than women. Young women donate blood readily but often discontinue in their late twenties, whereas in the country, women predominate (1.3:1), and continue giving into their forties. Recruited city donors are frequently women in their thirties and forties. It is concluded that future city blood donor recruitment should be directed to

This work aim to present the descriptive analysis of serious adverse reactions in donors (dSAR's), which were notified in 2010 and 2011 in the French national haemovigilance database "e-FIT" (Internet secured haemovigilance reporting system). Some data, which are necessary for this analysis, also come from the regional haemovigilance coordinators' reports (RHC). The other parts of haemovigilance in the context of donation, without donors adverse reactions, such as post-donation information (PDI), adverse events occurred in the blood collection steps of the transfusion chain and epidemiology ar

Low hemoglobin deferral occurs in about 10% of attempted whole blood donations and commonly is a consequence of iron deficiency anemia. Pre-menopausal women often have iron deficiency anemia caused by menstruation and pregnancy and have low hemoglobin deferral on their first donation attempt. Frequent donors also develop iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia because blood donation removes a large amount of iron from the donor and the 56-day minimum inter-donation interval for donors in the United States is not sufficient for recovery of hemoglobin and iron stores. Other causes for low hem

INTRODUCTION: Blood groups are inherited biological characteristics that do not change throughout life in healthy people. Blood groups represent antigens found on the surface of red blood cells. Kell blood group system consists of 31 antigens. Kell antigen (K) is present in 0.2% of the population (the rare blood group). Cellano antigen is present in more than 99% (the high-frequency antigen). These antigens have a distinct ability to cause an immune response in the people after blood transfusion or pregnancy who, otherwise, did not have them before.

Approximately one third of the Norwegian blood donor population has been tested for infection with human T-lymphotropic virus type I and II (HTLV-I/II). This study was initiated to provide an indication as to whether or not the Norwegian transfusion service should screen the entire donor population for HTLV I/II. No HTLV-I infections were found among the blood donors. One new donor was confirmed HTLV-II positive. This individual had previously used drugs intravenously. HTLV-I/II infection can be regarded as a marker for risk behaviour, and testing can be of significance in the quality assuranc

Among 248 asymptomatic blood donors positive for antibody to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) enrolled in a long-term prospective study, 86% had chronic HCV infection and 14% appeared to have recovered as assessed by serial determinations of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and HCV RNA by polymerase chain reaction. Established parenteral risk factors for HCV transmission were identified in 75% of donors. In addition, there was a strong independent association between HCV positivity and cocaine snorting, suggesting that shared snorting devices may be a covert route of parenteral transmis

The frequency of thyroid antibodies was investigated in 1314 healthy blood donors. Twenty-three of 870 males (2.6%) were positive for thyroglobulin antibody (TA), 34 (3.9%) for thyroid microsomal antibody (MA) and 19 (2.2%) for both TA and MA. Thirty-four of 484 females (6.2%) were positive for TA, 46 (9.5%) for MA and 29 (6.0%) for both TA and MA. Eighty-six of 1314 blood donors were positive for TA and/or MA. There was no difference in liver function tests between AAT and controls. In females, the incidence of thyroid antibodies tended to increase with age. However, the subjects aged under 1
