Comparable efficacy of self-monitoring of quantitative urine glucose with self-monitoring of blood glucose on glycaemic control in non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes.

AIM: To assess whether self-monitoring of quantitative urine glucose or blood glucose is effective, convenient and safe for glycaemic control in non-insulin treated type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Adults with non-insulin treated type 2 diabetes were recruited and randomized into three groups: Group A, self-monitoring with a quantitative urine glucose meter (n = 38); Group B, self monitoring with a blood glucose meter (n=35); Group C, the control group without self monitoring (n=35). All patients were followed up for six months, during which identical diabetes care was provided. RESULTS: There was

[Problems of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) and right drawing blood methods--the impact that technique at the time of the blood glucose self puncture drawing blood and part give measurements].

Devices for self monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) are used by diabetic patients themselves. Evaluation of the environmental temperature during use by patients showed the importance of the temperature environment. When measurement is performed at a temperature outside the measurement temperature range, a function to display errors or does not display measurement values is indispensable. Measures to reduce puncture pain in SMBG include use of a thin needle, shallow puncturing, and the selection of the palm or forearm instead of the fingertip as a puncture site. Using these measures to reduce p

Use of Ambulatory Glucose Profile in Monitoring and Improved Control of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus When Compared to Self-monitoring of Blood Glucose.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is hyperglycemia diagnosed for the first time during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. It often leads to neonatal complications. Effective management of GDM is crucial to mitigate such risks. This study evaluates the effectiveness of ambulatory glucose profile (AGP) vs self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in managing GDM. METHODS: This 18-month observational study was conducted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Raipur, India, involving 65 pregnant women diagnosed with GDM. Thirty-two patients wore the flash glucose monit

Development of an Automatic Puncturing and Sampling System for a Self-Monitoring Blood Glucose Device.

BACKGROUND: Performing self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is a clinical challenge for elderly people with low dexterity. An all-in-one-type SMBG device that can simply and easily puncture and monitor would be useful for them. We developed an automatic skin-puncturing and blood-sampling (APS) system for introducing of an all-in-one-type SMBG device. The aims of this study were to determine if the developed APS system, which has automatic puncturing, squeezing, and application functions, could provide sufficient blood sample volumes for SMBG and to determine the factors associated with fail

Effects of self-monitoring of blood glucose on quality of life in elderly diabetic patients.

Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) has been associated with improvement in diabetes knowledge and glycemic control in young and middle-aged diabetic patients. This study investigated the influences of SMBG on the quality of life in 20 older diabetic individuals, aged 60 to 79 years with duration of diabetes 15.6 +/- 2.3 (SD) years. Questionnaires (Cronbach's alpha reliability = .93) were administered regarding the impact of four aspects of diabetic self-care--general factors, diet, medications, and monitoring blood or urine--on quality of life. Each category was scored separately. Data we

Frequency and accuracy of self-monitoring of blood glucose in children: relationship to glycemic control.

We evaluated the long-term effects of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) on glycemic control in a large unselected group of insulin-dependent diabetic (IDD) children and adolescents (N = 282) treated at a diabetes clinic. Among those who had been taught SMBG techniques (N = 229) and reported frequency of use (N = 209), only 26% reported monitoring three or more times per day. HbA1 levels of patients who monitored their blood most frequently did not differ from those who monitored blood less frequently or those who monitored only urine. Likewise, HbA1 levels of patients who monitored with

Comparison of an Intermittently Scanned (Flash) Continuous Glucose Monitoring System to Standard Self-Monitoring of Capillary Blood Glucose in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) requires close surveillance of blood glucose to prevent perinatal morbidity. Self-monitoring of capillary blood glucose (BGM) comes with considerable psychosocial burden. Intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitor (isCGM) devices are discreet and could considerably impact the lifestyle of the patient. They are designed to replace BGM testing in nonpregnant patients. Data on this technology in pregnancy are scant. The aim of this study was to assess concordance of BGM with isCGM in GDM. STUDY DESIGN: Institutional review board approved pros

Continuous glucose monitoring versus self-monitoring of blood glucose in individuals with type 2 diabetes: a randomised, multicentre, open-label, superiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes is the most common metabolic disorder worldwide, accounting for about 90% of people living with diabetes. Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), a measure of chronic glycaemic exposure, correlates with the risk of long-term complications, which can result in substantial morbidity for people with diabetes and major costs to health-care systems. The value of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in people with type 2 diabetes managed with basal insulin and modern therapies remains unclear. FreeDM2 aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of real-time CGM in adults with type 2 diabete

Influence of partial pressure of oxygen in blood samples on measurement performance in glucose-oxidase-based systems for self-monitoring of blood glucose.

BACKGROUND: Partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) in blood samples can affect blood glucose (BG) measurements, particularly in systems that employ the glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme reaction on test strips. In this study, we assessed the impact of different pO2 values on the performance of five GOx systems and one glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) system. Two of the GOx systems are labeled by the manufacturers to be sensitive to increased blood oxygen content, while the other three GOx systems are not. METHODS: Aliquots of 20 venous samples were adjusted to the following pO2 values: <45, ~70, and ≥150 mmH

A retrospective study comparing the results of continuous glucose monitoring to self-blood glucose monitoring for pregnant women with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) during pregnancy is associated with better glycemic control in women with T1DM. However, no clear benefits have been demonstrated in reducing adverse feto-maternal outcomes in pregnant women with T1DM. DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a retrospective, single-center study of pregnant women with T1DM to evaluate the impact of CGM use on glycemic control and feto-maternal outcomes in pregnant women with T1DM. RESULTS: Of 265 women with T1DM, 92 (34.7%) used CGM, and
