INTRODUCTION: Acetabular fractures with uncontained posterior wall and posterior column bone loss make orientation of the acetabular component difficult during total hip arthroplasty (THA). When the posterior buttress is deficient, the socket tends to settle in retroversion, which alters hip biomechanics, promotes edge loading and accelerated polyethylene wear, and predisposes to anterior impingement and instability. Structural femoral head autograft restores bone stock in such defects, but its influence on final cup version is seldom documented. To our knowledge, this is the first series to s

One hundred nine obstetrical palsy patients with defective shoulder abduction and external rotation had subscapularis release and transfer of teres major to infraspinatus with or without pedicle transfer of the clavicular head of pectoralis major to deltoid. The age at surgery averaged 67 months (11-192) and follow-up averaged 36 months (12-80). Thirty-nine cases had follow-up CT scan of both shoulders. Improvement of abduction averaged 64 degrees and that of external rotation 50 degrees, 100% and 290% gain, respectively. Both negatively correlated with the age at surgery (P < 0.001), and were

OBJECTIVE: A major factor that impacts the long-term outcome and complication rates of total shoulder arthroplasty is the preoperative posterior glenoid bone loss quantified by glenoid retroversion. The purpose of this study was to assess if glenoid retroversion varies significantly at different glenoid heights in Walch B2 and B3 glenoids.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with B2 and B3 glenoid types were included following retrospective review of 386 consecutive CT shoulder studies performed for arthroplasty preoperative planning. True axial CT reconstructions were created using a validated t

The large economic losses caused by leg disorders have raised concerns in the broiler industry. Several types of leg disorders in broilers have been identified, such as tibial dyschondroplasia (TD), femoral head necrosis (FHN), and valgus-varus deformity (VVD). In this study, phenotypic changes associated with VVD were examined using clinical diagnosis, anatomical examination, measured growth performance, bone traits, and serum indicators. The incidence of VVD among the chicken population at a commercial facility in Tangshan China was 1.75% (n = 52,000), distributed about 1:1 (n = 122), betwee

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have evaluated glenoid version as a risk factor for anterior and posterior shoulder instability. However, the association of glenoid version with combined anterior-inferior-posterior (>180°) labrum injuries is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to investigate various parameters of glenoid morphology, including version, in >180° labral tears and to compare these values with isolated anterior and isolated posterior tears.
METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging studies from a consecutive series of shoulder instability patients were reviewed by 3 independent o

The paper presents a theory of fixation failure and loosening in cemented total hip prostheses and proceeds to investigate this using an experimentally validated finite element model and two prosthesis types, namely the Charnley and the C-Stem. The study investigates the effects of retroversion torque occurring at heel-strike in combination with a loss of proximal cement/bone support and distal implant/cement support with a good distal cement/bone interface. A 3D finite element model was validated by comparison of femoral surface strains with those measured in an in vitro experimental simulati

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of the study is to share the first experience of authors with the management of glenoid defects by a bone graft in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. MATERIAL AND METHODS Evaluation of 7 patients was conducted, who underwent reverse total shoulder arthroplasty at the authors' department. Due to the presence of glenoid bone defect, augmentation was performed by bone graft, obtained either as an autograft harvested from the humeral head of the patient intraoperatively or as an allograft from the femoral head from the bone tissue bank. In all the implantations,

BACKGROUND: Severe posterior glenoid bone loss with glenohumeral osteoarthritis with an intact rotator cuff can be managed with reverse shoulder arthroplasty but requires lateralization and version correction to avoid potential complications, such as instability, notching and implant failure. Angled bone grafting with humeral head autograft can provide durable glenoid bone stock, but results have been mixed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient-reported and objective outcomes as well as complication and failure rates for patients who underwent angled humeral head autografting for

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) requiring extensive reaming to address severe glenoid bone loss increases the risk of glenoid medialization and baseplate failure. We hypothesized that (1) metal-augmented baseplate prevents the medialization of the joint line and preserves glenoid bone stock similarly to bony increased-offset (BIO)-RSA and (2) bone graft viability and healing in BIO-RSA patients become compromised over time.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-one patients (83 shoulders) underwent glenoid lateralization with bone (BIO-RSA group, 44) or metal-augmented baseplate (meta

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty continues to be utilized for the treatment of cuff tear arthropathy, glenohumeral degenerative joint disease, and irreparable rotator cuff tears. With advancement in component designs, glenoid retroversion and inclination are now correctable with augmented baseplates. However, quantifying bone loss and lateralization compared to standard baseplates has not been studied. The purpose of the current study is to determine the volume of bone reamed and net lateralization with a standardized baseplate vs. augmented baseplate when glenoid inclination was corr

INTRODUCTION: It was hypothesized that pelvic retroversion in Adult Spinal Deformity (ASD) can be related to an increased hip loading explaining the occurrence of hip-spine syndrome.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How pelvic retroversion can modify acetabular orientation in ASD during walking?
METHODS: 89 primary ASD and 37 controls underwent 3D gait analysis and full-body biplanar X-rays. Classic spinopelvic parameters were calculated from 3D skeletal reconstructions in addition to acetabular anteversion, abduction, tilt, and coverage. Then, 3D bones were registered on each gait frame to compute the dy

INTRODUCTION: The aim of our study was to (1) report our surgical outcomes of internal fixation in patients with non-displaced or valgus impaction fractures of the femoral neck, (2) introduce our new three-dimensional assessment method using a combination of X-ray and CT imaging, and (3) determine which radiologic measurements significantly predicted fixation failure.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that high posterior tilt angle and retroversion angle are related to high incidence of non-union and osteonecrosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2009 to December 2016, 64 elderly patients in t

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral osteoarthritis may be associated with severe posterior glenoid bone loss and glenoid retroversion. Treatment with total shoulder arthroplasty and autologous bone graft obtained from the humeral head has been infrequently reported in the peer-reviewed literature.
METHODS: The clinical and radiographic results of primary total shoulder replacement with an all-polyethylene glenoid component and autologous humeral head graft augmentation performed by a single surgeon in thirteen consecutive patients were evaluated.
RESULTS: Twelve of the thirteen patients were followed f

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between the grade of humeral osteoarthritis (OA) and the severity of glenoid morphology according to Walch. We hypothesized that there would be a correlation.
METHODS: Overal, 143 shoulders in 135 patients (73 females, 62 males) undergoing shoulder arthroplasty surgery for primary glenohumeral OA were included consecutively. Mean age was 69.3 years (47 to 85). Humeral head (HH), osteophyte length (OL), and morphology (transverse decentering of the apex, transverse, or coronal asphericity) on radiographs were correlate

AIM: How reduced femoral neck anteversion alters the distribution of pressure and contact area in Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty (HRA) remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively describe the biomechanical implication of different femoral neck version angles on HRA using a finite element analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of sixty models were constructed to assess the effect of different femoral neck version angles on three different functional loads: 0°of hip flexion, 45°of hip flexion, and 90° of hip flexion. Femoral version was varied between 30° of anteversion to

BACKGROUND: Glenoid defects can be addressed traditionally by asymmetric reaming or by bone-preserving correction to a more lateral joint line by bone or metal augmented baseplates in reverse shoulder arthroplasties. While there is more evidence in literature regarding the outcome and complications of Bony Increased Offset Reversed Shoulder Arthroplasty (BIO-RSA), there is minimal reported experience with the outcome after metal glenoid augments. The aim of this study was to determine whether a metal augment can correct the glenoid deformity in an anatomic manner.
METHODS: Glenoid morphology

The hip joint is a complex structure in both form and function, which presents challenges for accurate diagnosis and treatment of pathology. Assessing acetabular version on plain radiographs can be particularly challenging as this requires extrapolation of 3-dimensional anatomy from 2-dimensional radiographic markers. The limitations inherent with plain radiographs of the hip have contributed to the increased use of advanced imaging including computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging in the hip preservation world. Modern computed tomography scans provide incredibly detailed evalu
