Methods in molecular biology (Clifton, N.J.)2025eng
Evaluation of astrocyte proliferation in human brain pathology plays a key role in the diagnostic and prognostic assessment of diseases, especially in cases of benign or malignant brain neoplasms. However, the proliferative potential of nonneoplastic astrocytes within the affected human brain parenchyma has not been well defined. Given the beneficial functions of proliferating reactive astrocytes for brain repair in experimental models of stroke and trauma, investigating the context-specific potential of human astrocytes to proliferate will be a major step forward in exploiting their roles in

In a 19-month-old patient with mucopolysaccharidosis I (Pfaundler-Hurler, MPS I/H) high-pressure hydrocephalus required the implantation of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. Despite a reduction in both ventricular volume and intracranial pressure, clinical symptoms suggesting compression of the brain stem persisted. Brain MRI revealed a tumor within the posterior cranial fossa. Cytologic examination of the cerebrospinal fluid was suggestive of a poorly differentiated ependymoma. High-pressure hydrocephalus is a common complication in MPS I/H. As changes in mucopolysaccharide metabolism may be ass

Beside lung and skeleton, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) can also metastasize to the brain. In order to collect clinical and histopathological data on these tumors, we studied the local distribution of 50 metastases of RCC in different brain regions (frontal, parietal, temporal occipital lobe and brain stem/cerebellum) and found frequencies ranging from 18.4% to 22.4% in each region. This indicates that there is no preferable site of renal cell carcinoma metastases in the brain. In 46 (92%) of the cases the primary tumor or metastases in other organs had already been diagnosed before operation of

Syringobulbiais very rare condition defined as slit-like fluid cavity in the brain stem. Several conditions have been reported to be associated with syringobulbia including neoplasms, spinal cord traumas or lesions such as tethered cord, hind-brain herniation, infections such as meningitis and in isolation. Although post-traumatic syringomyelia has been wieldy described previously, traumatic brain injury has not been reported as the mechanism and etiology of isolated syringobulbia. We herein report a 24-year old man with previous history of severe traumatic brain injury who presented with rece

A comprehensive technique was developed for continuous electrophysiological monitoring of intrinsic brain stem motor function during surgery to remove space-occupying lesions in the fourth ventricle and brain stem. The technique is analogous to that used during surgery in the cerebellopontine angle; motor nuclei and peripheral pontine fiber tracts of Cranial Nerves III-XII are identified by the electrical stimulation of structures in the operative field and the evaluation of the compound muscle action potentials recorded from the corresponding muscles of the head. Nerve function is monitored c

At the Moscow Burdenko Institute, 128 children with malignant tumours of the cerebral hemispheres were operated on within 10 years: 87 total removals, 28 subtotal resections, 13 biopsies and explorations. Lethality of the first 10 days: 7. Size and extent of the tumours do not yield any contraindications for surgery. Rapid section examination does not give sufficient information about the postoperative course. Some patients with histologically malignant tumours have been under after-observation for 10 to 15 years. Only the intraoperative macroscopic findings permit a decision with respect to o

The recurrent laryngeal nerve in its course from the brain stem to the larynx follows a path that brings it in proximity to numerous structures. These structures can interfere with its function by pressure or by disruption of the nerve caused by disease invading the nerve. The various causes of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis that I have observed during the past 24 years are reported. In 134 patients with recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, the left recurrent nerve was most commonly involved. Malignant neoplasms of the lung and pulmonary tuberculosis were the most frequent causes of the p

Anti-SOX1 antibodies are associated with diverse neurological syndromes, targeting both the central (paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration) and peripheral nervous systems (Lambert Eaton myasthenic syndrome, paraneoplastic neuropathy). Although the pathogenic role of these antibodies remains unclear, their strong association with underlying neoplastic disease (mainly small-cell lung cancer) has designated them as onconeural antibodies. Here, we present a case of cerebellar ataxia with marked photophobia, with severe atrophy of the cerebellum and brain stem, associated with anti-SOX1 antibodies

Paraneoplastic syndromes are systemic reactions to neoplasms mediated by immunologic or hormonal mechanisms. The most well-recognized paraneoplastic neurologic syndrome, both clinically and on imaging, is limbic encephalitis. However, numerous additional clinically described syndromes affect the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Many of these syndromes can have imaging findings that, though less well described, are important in making the correct diagnosis. Moreover, imaging in these syndromes frequently mimics more common pathology, which can be a diagnostic challenge for radiologist

The occurrence of more than one brain tumor in a single patient is not new, resulting from RT- or CT-induced neoplasms, syndromes or casual association. We report on the exceptional case of a 12-year-old boy harboring three different brain tumors with no definite correlation. The first MRI showed a medulloblastoma with signs of infratentorial and supratentorial tumor spreading, including a small frontal mass. Despite the good response to surgical and adjuvant treatment, the frontal mass remained unchanged and was excised, revealing a lipoastrocytoma. Finally, the possible local recurrence of t

Postoperative radiation therapy (RT), either alone or in combination with chemotherapy, is the mainstay of treatment for primary and/or metastatic brain tumors. The majority of patients with brain tumors will have significant symptoms of their disease and of RT that will have a negative impact on their quality of life and neurocognitive function. The symptoms of brain tumors depend on tumor location. Radiation-induced brain injury is a complex and dynamic process involving all cells in the brain, including endothelial and oligodendroglial cells, astrocytes, microglia, neurons, and neuronal ste

Objective: To calculate out the Hausdorff distance based on the scripting in RayStation treatment planning system, which was then applied in measuring the deformation error of brain stem during image automatic registration between CT and MR. Methods: Scripting was edited in RayStation system (version 4.7) by using IronPython. The set of point coordinates on the contour of any two region of interest (ROI) had been found firstly, then the Hausdorff distance between the two point sets was calculated out. A graphical user interface (GUI) was designed by using XAML to acquire the visualized output

This study reevaluates the conventional understanding of midbrain anatomy and neuroanatomical nomenclature in the context of recent genetic and anatomical discoveries. The authors assert that the midbrain should be viewed as an integral part of the forebrain due to shared genetic determinants and evolutionary lineage. The isthmo-mesencephalic boundary is recognized as a significant organizer for both the caudal midbrain and the isthmo-cerebellar area. The article adopts the prosomeric model, redefining the whole brain as neuromeres, offering a more precise depiction of brain development, inclu

Neural stem cells, which are capable of multi-potential differentiation and self-renewal, have recently been shown to have clinical potential for repairing central nervous system tissue damage. However, the theme trends and knowledge structures for human neural stem cells have not yet been studied bibliometrically. In this study, we retrieved 2742 articles from the PubMed database from 2013 to 2018 using "Neural Stem Cells" as the retrieval word. Co-word analysis was conducted to statistically quantify the characteristics and popular themes of human neural stem cell-related studies. Bibliograp

Dorsally exophytic brain-stem gliomas represent a distinctive subgroup of pediatric brain-stem neoplasms that are amenable to radical excision because of their benign histology and growth characteristics. However, their attachment to the floor of the fourth ventricle invariably precludes complete tumor excision. The long-term behavior of the residual tumor remains a subject of concern. To address this issue, the authors reviewed their experience with 18 dorsally exophytic brain-stem gliomas treated between 1974 and 1990. At operation, the tumors filled the fourth ventricle, fungating out of a

We report a case of solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) involving the posterior fossa in a fetus of 25 weeks' gestation. SFT is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm, arising in various locations including the meninges. After disclosure of severe ventriculomegaly and posterior fossa mass measuring 45 mm in diameter, termination of pregnancy was performed in accordance with French legislation. Our neuropathological study revealed a tumour covered by meninges, with severe compression of the cerebellum and the brain stem. Microscopically, the tumour was highly cellular, made of packed small fusiform cells with b

The peculiarities of the dynamics of the entire complex of otoneurologic symptoms were studied in 60 patients with a tumor of the acoustic nerve in stages II and III of the disease after total (in 38) and partial (in 22) resection of the neoplasm. The data obtained bore evidence that the dynamics of the otoneurologic symptoms depended on the developmental stage of the tumor, its relation to the brain stem, and the character of the operation (total or partial removal of the tumor). Total resection of the tumor in stage II proved most effective: in the residual period both stem vestibular disord

This review highlights major achievements of the Russian oncology in the past decades, such as works of N.N. Petrov, L.A. Zilber, N.N. Blokhin, E.E. Pogosyants. Revolutionary shift in the understanding of the malignization process have become possible after decoding of human genome, as well as genome of several tumors such as breast cancer, acute myeloblastic leukemia, several brain tumors, testicular cancer and other neoplasms. The issue of stem cells being possible ancestors of tumor cells is also discussed in the review. Also the author observes main modern therapeutic approaches towards ca

Since cloning of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family member breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP/ABCG2) and its characterization as a multidrug resistance efflux transporter in 1998, BCRP has been the subject of more than two thousand scholarly articles. In normal tissues, BCRP functions as a defense mechanism against toxins and xenobiotics, with expression in the gut, bile canaliculi, placenta, blood-testis and blood-brain barriers facilitating excretion and limiting absorption of potentially toxic substrate molecules, including many cancer chemotherapeutic drugs. BCRP also plays a key ro
