Why men still get more promotions than women.

Though companies now invest heavily in mentoring and developing their best female talent, all that attention doesn't translate into promotions. A Catalyst survey of over 4000 high potentials shows that more women than men have mentors-yet women are paid $4600 less in their first post-MBA jobs, hold lower-level positions, and feel less career satisfaction. To better understand why, the authors conducted in-depth interviews with 40 participants in a mentoring program at a large multinational. All mentoring is not created equal, they discovered. Only sponsorship involves advocacy for advancement.

Picking the right transition strategy.

Leaders in transition reflexively rely on the skills and strategies that worked for them in the past. That's a mistake, says Watkins, whose research shows that executives moving into new roles must gain a deep understanding of the situation at hand and adapt to it. To help them accurately assess their organizations and tailor their strategies and styles accordingly, he developed the STARS framework. "STARS" is an acronym for the five common situations leaders move into: start-up, turnaround, accelerated growth, realignment, and sustaining success. Thus, the model outlines the challenges of lau

Create three distinct career paths for innovators.

Large companies say they Create Three Distinct want to be Career Paths for Innovators innovative, but they fundamentally mismanage their talent. Expecting innovators to grow along with their projects-from discovery to incubation to acceleration--sets them up to fail. Most people excel at one of the phases, not all three. By allowing innovation employees to develop career paths suited to their strengths, companies will create a sustainable innovation function.

Hired, fired, and not retired: an interview with a physician executive who has run the career gauntlet. Interview by Richard L. Reece.

Richard L. Reece, MD, interviewed Robert J. Hudson, MD, on April 24, 2000 to discuss his experiences as a physician executive who has made the career transition from practicing physician to managed care executive to biotech entrepreneur. Along the way, he's hired and fired others, and been fired himself. Painful as it is, many physician executives' career realities include being fired. Organizations, after all, are living organizations--they grow, wither, and molt. And as they molt, organizations shed and regrow new skin. What do physician executives do when they've been fired? They go through

Surgical advocacy as an academic career path: A guide for promotion discussions.

Public policy and health care are demonstrably interconnected. Medical and surgical outcomes are inseparableable from the political processes and laws that govern our nation. Health care delivery and public health are shaped by public discourse in city councils, county commissions, and state/national legislatures and agencies. Health inequities including barriers to access are the subject of ongoing political debate related to health care reform, practice management guidelines, firearm violence prevention, physician compensation, and Medicaid/Medicare policy. Effective surgical advocacy is per

The existential necessity of midlife change.

As life expectancy in the West increases and companies can no longer promise lifelong security, many businesspeople will need to make major changes during middle age, embarking on a second life and a second career. They must start by getting beyond two pervasive and opposing myths. The first is that midlife marks the onset of decline. Problems do arise during middle age--concerns about health and finances, for instance--but one's life force does not expire at 65, nor do possibilities vanish. In fact, by middle age, most executives have gained a freedom that only self-knowledge can impart, and

Becoming the boss.

Even for the most gifted individuals, the process of becoming a leader is an arduous, albeit rewarding, journey of continuous learning and self-development. The initial test along the path is so fundamental that we often overlook it: becoming a boss for the first time. That's a shame, because the trials involved in this rite of passage have serious consequences for both the individual and the organization. For a decade and a half, the author has studied people-particularly star performers-making major career transitions to management. As firms have become leaner and more dynamic, new managers

Promotion from Associate Professor to Full Professor Should Not Be Monolithic: A National Bibliometric Study by Radiology Subspecialty.

BACKGROUND: Academic promotion from associate professor (AP) to full professor (FP) in radiology relies heavily on bibliometrics, yet no subspecialty-specific benchmarks exist to guide promotion committees or faculty career planning. Applying uniform productivity standards across diverse subspecialties may disadvantage faculty in certain fields and fail to account for legitimate variations in research output. Hence, we aim to establish subspecialty-specific bibliometric benchmarks for promotion readiness from AP to FP in academic radiology and quantify the promotion gap across subspecialties.

A campaign strategy for your career.

Organizations are inherently political, and pretending they're not is just plain impractical. But strategizing like a politician to advance your career doesn't have to mean compromising your integrity. You can craft a campaign plan that actually gets results without making you feel soiled. So argues Clark, who has worked with top-tier politicians and business executives as they strive to achieve their goals. She recommends that in business, as in politics, aspiring leaders choose their career milestones from the get-go and plan precisely what reaching each one will demand. That means taking in

Making yourself indispensable.

Peter Drucker and other leadership thinkers have long argued that leaders should focus on strengthening their strengths. How should they do that? Improving on a weakness is pretty easy and straight forward: You can make measurable progress by honing and practicing basic techniques. But developing a strength is a different matter, because simply doing more of what you're good at will yield only incremental improvements. If you are strong technically, becoming even more of a technical expert won't make you a dramatically better leader. If, however, you use what the authors call "nonlinear develo

The last act of a great CEO.

No one is in a better position to get an incoming CEO up to speed than his or her predecessor, whose insights and accumulated wisdom are uniquely valuable during the transition and even beyond. The outgoing leader can provide information about the expectations of high-ranking employees; short-term opportunities ripe for harvesting; how the board and others perceive the newcomer's reputation or personal brand; the strengths and foibles of internal allies and external partners; organizational bench strength; and the wisdom that comes from experience well reflected upon. Organizations and their s

How the best of the best get better and better.

What is the real key to elite performance? According to sports psychologist turned executive coach Graham Jones, star athletes and businesspeople share one defining trait: mental toughness. People who become champions aren't necessarily more gifted than others; they're just masters at managing pressure, meticulously tackling goals, and driving themselves to stay ahead of the competition. Jones, who has advised Olympic medalists and Fortune 500 executives, sees many parallels between the arenas of business and sports, especially in the behavior of people who rise to the very top. These stars ha

Firing back: how great leaders rebound after career disasters.

Among the tests of a leader, few are more challenging-and more painful-than recovering from a career catastrophe. Most fallen leaders, in fact, don't recover. Still, two decades of consulting experience, scholarly research, and their own personal experiences have convinced the authors that leaders can triumph over tragedy--if they do so deliberately. Great business leaders have much in common with the great heroes of universal myth, and they can learn to overcome profound setbacks by thinking in heroic terms. First, they must decide whether or not to fight back. Either way, they must recruit o

Enhancing equity in academic surgery promotion practices.

BACKGROUND: Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) in medicine and women faculty have lower 10-year promotion rates than their White and male peers, despite controlling for productivity metrics. Promotion standards vary across institutions, but there is likely a common need to improve transparency and consistency while mitigating bias, inequity, and the harm of additional equity work that is commonly expected of Black, Indigenous, People of Color and women faculty (the so-called minority tax). METHODS: A promotion advisory committee consisting of clinical and research faculty at all ranks
