Prevalence of congenital anomalies in the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies represent an important global health issue. Data on the prevalence and pattern of congenital anomalies in the Caribbean region are scarce and lacking altogether in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao (ABC islands). METHODS: We performed a population-based surveillance study to determine the prevalence of structural congenital anomalies in the ABC islands, including all live births and stillbirths between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2017 with major congenital anomalies according to EUROCAT guide 1.5. Terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomaly were included as well

Ethnic differences in prevalence and determinants of mother-child bed-sharing in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: To date few studies have examined how multiple layers of influences shape the emergence of bed-sharing practices in the first 2 years postpartum. In our report, we examined bed-sharing in a large multiethnic sample, exploring the influences of three broad classes of influence on bed-sharing at single time points and across time: (1) sociodemographic and (2) contextual factors such as breastfeeding, maternal mental health and stress, and (3) child temperament and sleep habits. METHODS: Frequencies of bed-sharing were assessed at two time points, 2 and 24 months, in a population-bas

Lymphogranuloma venereum among men who have sex with men--Netherlands, 2003-2004.

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is a systemic, sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a variety of the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis that rarely occurs in the United States and other industrialized countries; the prevalence of LGV is greatest in Africa, Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and Caribbean countries. However, in the Netherlands, which typically has fewer than five cases a year, as of September 2004, a total of 92 cases of LGV had been confirmed during the preceding 17 months among men who have sex with men (MSM). The first 13 cases, diagnosed during April-November 20

Minimum inhibitory concentrations of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains in clients of the Amsterdam sexual health clinic with a Dutch versus an international sexual network.

OBJECTIVES: International travel combined with sex may contribute to dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng). To assess the role of travel in Ng strain susceptibility, we compared minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for five antibiotics (ie, azithromycin, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, cefixime and ciprofloxacin) in strains from clients with an exclusively Dutch sexual network and clients with an additional international sexual network. METHODS: From 2013 to 2019, we recorded recent residence of sexual partners of clients (and of their partners) with Ng at the

High varicella zoster virus susceptibility in Caribbean island populations: Implications for vaccination.

OBJECTIVES: Varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection is reported regularly among adolescents and adults in Caribbean island populations. The disease more often runs a severe course among these populations, causing a substantial burden. The aim of this sero-epidemiological study was to obtain an insight into VZV susceptibility and its determinants in island populations of the Caribbean Netherlands (CN). METHODS: Participants from Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba (n = 1829, aged 0-90 years) donated a blood sample and completed a questionnaire. VZV-specific IgG antibodies were determined using a b

Traditional healing practices originating in Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao: A review of the literature on psychiatry and Brua.

Brua is an Afro-Caribbean religion and healing tradition from the southern part of the former Netherlands Antilles. Like other Caribbean healing traditions, it plays a significant role in shaping how individuals experience and express disorders which Western health professionals consider to require psychiatric care. Because little has been published on Brua, and because patients from Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are often reluctant to discuss their commitment to this tradition, they are often misdiagnosed and either over- or undertreated by biomedically trained health professionals. The present

Nicolaes Tulp and the golden age of the Dutch Republic.

In the seventeenth century, Holland and the allied provinces of the northern Netherlands won final independence from their Spanish overlords and formed a worldwide economic empire. Dutch ships dominated the seas from the Caribbean to Japan and reconnoitred the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. Dutch society was cosmopolitan and supported great painters, philosophers and scientists. In these astonishing years, the physician Nicolaes Tulp [1593-1674] practised medicine in Amsterdam and, in 1641, published a book of his medical observations. This book ran into many editions; the Cowlishaw coll

Toward a global standard for labeling neuropsychological test scores? Lessons learned from the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders).

In 2020, the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology (AACN) published consensus labels for the uniform description of normally distributed test results in the field of clinical neuropsychology. These consensus labels were developed in a North American context, but other countries have also struggled with the challenges of harmonizing verbal descriptive labels in neuropsychological reports. A recent effort in Norway has demonstrated that literal translations of the AACN labels do not always work in a different language and culture. Also, verbal labels may not be unequivocally understandabl

[Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1): a forgotten pathogen].

HTLV-1 is a retrovirus endemic to different parts of the world that causes a variety of symptoms, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe diseases such as lymphoma/leukaemia and myelopathy. HTLV-1 is transmitted from mother to child through breastfeeding, sexually and via blood and organ donation. We describe 3 patients as examples of the distinct clinical problems related to HTLV-1: a 53-year-old woman with HTLV-1-associated myelopathy, a 43-year-old woman with acute T-cell lymphoma and a 34-year-old pregnant woman who is an asymptomatic carrier. It is not known how many people are infe

The contribution of cannabis use to the increased psychosis risk among minority ethnic groups in Europe.

BACKGROUND: We examined whether cannabis use contributes to the increased risk of psychotic disorder for non-western minorities in Europe. METHODS: We used data from the EU-GEI study (collected at sites in Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands) on 825 first-episode patients and 1026 controls. We estimated the odds ratio (OR) of psychotic disorder for several groups of migrants compared with the local reference population, without and with adjustment for measures of cannabis use. RESULTS: The OR of psychotic disorder for non-western minorities, adjusted for age, sex, a

Migration and schizophrenia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: An exploration of the evidence that a history of migration is a risk factor for schizophrenia and an evaluation of those studies that seek an explanation for this. RECENT FINDINGS: A meta-analysis found an increased risk for schizophrenia among first-generation and second-generation migrants and found a particularly high risk for migrants from countries where the majority of the population was Black. The latter finding was confirmed and extended by a large first-contact incidence study in the UK, which found excessive risks for schizophrenia and mania in the African-Caribbe

Longitudinal virological outcomes and factors associated with virological failure in behaviorally HIV-infected young adults on combination antiretroviral treatment in the Netherlands, 2000 to 2015.

Achieving and maintaining viral suppression in young adults (18-24 years) living with HIV is challenging. Overall HIV viral suppression rates are lower in young as compared to older adults. Longitudinal data provide valuable insight on dynamics of viral suppression and variables of potential influence on HIV virological failure (VF), but is scarce in young adults living with HIV on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). We evaluated longitudinal virological outcomes of behaviorally young adults (18-24 years) living with HIV in the Netherlands over a period of 15 years. We analyzed data from

[Progressive myelopathy caused by human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) in 3 patients in The Netherlands].

One man and two women (aged 30, 44 and 46, respectively) were seen between 1987 and 1992 with a myelopathy caused by the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). The first symptoms were impaired gait in the man and micturition disorders in the women. Diagnosing took 2 to 4 years, possibly due to the fact that many Dutch physicians are unfamiliar with the disease. The diagnosis was based on originating from an endemic area (i.e. Surinam and the Caribbean basin), the clinical picture and the presence of antibodies against HTLV-I in blood and CSF. The disease in a number of years leads to

The inter-relationships of tardive dyskinesia, parkinsonism, akathisia and tardive dystonia: the Curaçao Extrapyramidal Syndromes Study II.

A study of the four extrapyramidal syndromes (EPS), tardive dyskinesia, parkinsonism, akathisia and tardive dystonia, was performed in the Netherlands Antilles, a well-defined catchment area with only one psychiatric hospital. The population under study (N = 194; mean age 53.1) was mainly Afro-Caribbean, and most patients were chronic. The severity of each EPS was measured with valid and reliable rating scales. The purpose was to study both the strength of the inter-relationships of EPS and the prevalence of combinations of EPS. The inter-relationships between the EPS were analyzed by means of

Meta-analysis of linkage studies for Alzheimer's disease--a web resource.

Familial late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) shows high heritability. However, with the exception of ApoE, no well-replicated susceptibility genes have been identified to date. Several genome-wide linkage studies have nominated potential susceptibility loci but results are inconsistent, with individual scans showing few significant LOD scores. We have pooled linkage results from five independent genome scans and used the genome search meta-analysis (GSMA) method to analyse these data. The combined sample results in 2206 affected individuals and 785 families from Caucasian and Caribbean Hispa

Evolution and Trends of Facial Plastic Surgery and Facial Aesthetic Procedures in India: From Awakening to Revival.

Facial aesthetic surgery is an emerging branch worldwide. India, a torchbearer country in facial plastic surgery, has seen tremendous growth in medical technology, resources, and clientele over the past century. This study aims to study past practices and current trends in facial plastic surgery and aesthetic procedures in India by individually addressing commonly performed nonsurgical procedures (Botox, Kybella [Allergan, Irvine, CA], fillers, threads, micro-focused ultrasound, and nonsurgical hair restoration), and surgical procedures (rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, hair transplant, and faceli

[Investigation of anti-HTLV I/II seroprevalence in healthy blood donors in Izmir region, Turkey].

Almost 10-20 million people in the world are thought to be infected by human deltaretroviruses, namely human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) type I and II, recently. HTLV-I is endemic in southwestern Japan, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa, whereas HTLV-II is more prevalent in intravenous drug addicts, and in American indian populations, endemically. HTLV-I is mainly responsible for adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), however, HTLVII is not clearly associated with a known clinical disease. Both viruses may be transmitted by
