Three new acylated glycosides from the stems of Casearia velutina and their protective effect against H2O2-induced impairment in PC12 cells.

Chemical investigation of the stems of Casearia velutina led to the isolation and structural elucidation of three new acylated glycosides, casearicosides A-C (1-3), together with 13 known compounds. The structures of the new compounds were established by spectroscopic and chemical methods. These isolates were evaluated for protective effects against H(2)O(2)-induced impairment in PC12 cells and inhibitory activity against snake venom phosphodiesterase I. A brief chemotaxonomy of the genus Casearia is also discussed.

Structural Diversity of 2-O-(β-d-Glucopyranosyl)benzyl Quinates from Casearia tardieuae and Their Anti-Myocardial Hypertrophy Activity in Rat Cardiomyocytes.

Thirteen undescribed 2-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl)benzyl quinates (1-13) and two reported derivatives (14, 15) were obtained from the twigs and leaves of Casearia tardieuae. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis (1D/2D NMR, HRESIMS, IR, UV), coupled with acid hydrolysis and derivatization studies of the sugar moieties. Biological evaluation showed that compound 1 exhibited antihypertrophic potency comparable to the positive control prazosin, and its cytotoxicity was significantly lower than that of prazosin. Casearia tomentosa fruit extracts exposed larvicidal activity and morphological alterations in Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes albopictus under in vitro and semi field conditions.

Mosquitoes are notorious insects that transmit a wide range of infectious diseases, including zika, malaria, chikungunya, filariasis, and dengue. The overuse and incorrect application of synthetic pesticides to control mosquitoes has resulted in resistance development and environmental contamination, both of which have had a negative impact on human health. To address this issue, the larvicidal and pupicidal potential of acetone extract from Casearia tomentosa fruits was investigated. The extract was evaluated in a lab setting against all larval instars and pupa of Culex quinquefasciatus and A

Neutralization of some hematological and hemostatic alterations induced by neuwiedase, a metalloproteinase isolated from Bothrops neuwiedi pauloensis snake venom, by the aqueous extract from Casearia mariquitensis (Flacourtiaceae).

The aqueous extract from the leaves of Casearia mariquitensis (C. m.), a plant found in Brazilian open pastures, was assayed for its ability to inhibit some hematological and hemostatic effects induced by neuwiedase, a 22 kDa class P-I metalloproteinase from the venom of the South American pit viper Bothrops neuwiedi pauloensis. The aqueous extract from C. m. was able to neutralize the hematological alterations induced by the crude venom (C.V.) upon erythrocytes when the venom was incubated at a ratio of 1:10 (w/w, venom/extract), but it did not neutralize the platelet decreasing ability of C.

Plastid phylogenomics of the parietal clade of Malpighiales: ancestral genome synteny and congruent signal across exons, introns and spacers in support of Salicaceae relationships.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The parietal clade is one of the major lineages of the angiosperm order Malpighiales. Several nodes in the phylogenetic trees inferred from concatenated chloroplast genes exhibited low support, and various Malpighiales genera were found to have highly altered plastid genomes. METHODS: Here we newly generated seven complete plastid genomes to represent the major lineages of the pantropical genus Casearia using genome skimming. Together with published genome sequences of various sources, we comparatively analysed the genome structure of all major lineages of the Salicaceae

Antioxidant strategies of four native tree species across seasons in urban and peri-urban Atlantic Forest remnants.

Urban Atlantic Forest remnants are exposed to atmospheric oxidants, particularly tropospheric ozone (O₃), and seasonal environmental variability, yet the biochemical basis of tree resilience to these combined pressures remains poorly resolved. We investigated antioxidant strategies in Alchornea sidifolia (AS), Casearia sylvestris (CS), Guarea macrophylla (GM), and Machaerium nyctitans (MN), comparing an urban and a peri-urban site across dry and rainy seasons in São Paulo, Brazil. We quantified ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) redox pools, antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD; c

Atmospheric pollution affects the morphoanatomical and physiological responses of plants in urban Atlantic Forest remnants.

The Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP) in southern Brazil is impacted by high ozone levels posing significant threats to its urban forests and the Atlantic Forest remnants. These green areas, covering 540 km2 and constituting 30% of MASP's territory, necessitate an urgent assessment of air pollution impacts on their flora. Our study investigates the effects of atmospheric pollution on the morphoanatomical and physiological responses of four native tree species (Alchornea sidifolia, Casearia sylvestris, Guarea macrophylla, and Machaerium nyctitans) across two Atlantic Forest remnants in MASP

A Systematic Review on Exploration of Extracts and Phytochemicals for Peptic Ulcer from 2018 to 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, peptic ulcer disease affects a large number of individuals. In order to treat this condition, new, safe, and efficient treatments must be created because of the growing resistance to many traditional drugs. Several synthetic medications are available to treat ulcers. However, compared to natural products, newer medications are much more costly and are likely to have more adverse effects. METHOD: The literature was collected from various search engines, including PubMed, Scopus, SAGE, Nature Publishing Group, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, BioMed Central, Springe

Cytosporone B Affects ATP Production of Trypanosoma cruzi: A Lethal Action Investigation.

Chagas disease is a neglected parasitic infection spreading worldwide and affecting 8-10 million people, with 14,000 deaths. The treatment is limited to two toxicity nitroheterocycle drugs, approved more than 50 years ago. Considering the urgent need for new therapies, secondary metabolites isolated from endophytic fungi may represent a useful source of bioactive molecules with antiparasitic activity, as described in the literature. In this study, we investigated the anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity of seven compounds isolated from endophytic fungi present in leaves of the plant Casearia arbore

A modified acidic approach for DNA extraction from plant species containing high levels of secondary metabolites.

Purified genomic DNA can be difficult to obtain from some plant species because of the presence of impurities such as polysaccharides, which are often co-extracted with DNA. In this study, we developed a fast, simple, and low-cost protocol for extracting DNA from plants containing high levels of secondary metabolites. This protocol does not require the use of volatile toxic reagents such as mercaptoethanol, chloroform, or phenol and allows the extraction of high-quality DNA from wild and cultivated tropical species.
