The authors describe the chemical peeling or desquamation method, which more precisely consists of cutaneous exfoliation designed to promote young-looking skin. They are not concerned with the value of exfoliation as a method to prevent skin cancer, the effect of which has been studied by many authors, namely in relation to acnitic (senile) keratosis, radiodermatitis, leukoplasia, scleroderma pigmentosum, epithelioma.

Periorbital hyperpigmentation (POH) is a common aesthetic concern that impacts patients' emotional well-being and quality of life. POH can be difficult to manage as the etiology is often multifactorial or difficult to elucidate. An understanding of different contributing factors and ability to classify hyperpigmentation can aid in the management of POH. Classification of POH is divided into pigmented, vascular, structural, and mixed subtypes. A wide array of treatment options has been proposed belying the challenges inherent to improving POH. Modalities vary from topical therapies, chemical pe

BACKGROUND: Melasma (facial dermatoses) is an acquired chronic disorder of hyperpigmentation over sun exposed parts and continues to be a therapeutic challenge due to the presence of melanin at varying depths in the epidermis and dermis, and many researchers are working hard to find a solution. The main culprit to remain is direct sun exposure, with other factors like drugs, genetic predisposition, thyroid abnormalities, pregnancy, phototoxic and photoallergic cosmetics. Melasma continues to have a remarkable impact on the well-being of affected patients causing deep psychological and social a

Chemical peeling is a widely used procedure in the management of acne and acne scars. It causes controlled destruction of a part of or the entire epidermis, with or without the dermis, leading to exfoliation and removal of superficial lesions, followed by regeneration of new epidermal and dermal tissues. The most frequently used peeling agents are salicylic acid, glycolic acid, pyruvic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, Jessner solution, trichloroacetic acid, and phenol. The appropriate peel is chosen based on the patient's skin type, acne activity, and type of acne scars. Combination peels min

Chemical peeling for skin of color arose in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and other ancient cultures in and around Africa. Our current fund of medical knowledge regarding chemical peeling is a result of centuries of experience and research. The list of agents for chemical peeling is extensive. In ethnic skin, our efforts are focused on superficial and medium-depth peeling agents and techniques. Indications for chemical peeling in darker skin include acne vulgaris, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, scarring, photodamage, and pseudofolliculitis barbae. Careful selection of patients for

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus is a vesiculobullous autoimmune disease characterized by acantholysis due to antibodies against epidermal antigens.
CASE REPORTS: We report the first two cases of pemphigus in which lesions appeared in areas traumatized by cosmetic procedures. In one case, the patient had a history of pemphigus under excellent control; pemphigus lesions appeared only in her surgical scars 2 months after a reduction mammoplasty and facelift. The other patient presented with an outbreak of pemphigus 4 weeks after a chemical peel.
CONCLUSIONS: Physical agents including infrared and ionizin

BACKGROUND: Melasma is a distressing disfiguring acquired pigmentary disorder especially affecting females and it is of high tendency of recurrence. Up till now, treatment of melasma is a challenging problem.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the effectiveness of microneedling with glutathione versus microneedling alone in treatment of melasma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 29 adult females with epidermal type of melasma (confirmed with Wood's light examination) were enrolled. The affected area was subjected to microneedling using dermapen followed by application of glutathione solution on the

Melasma is common skin condition presenting with hyperpigmentation. To evaluate the efficacy, tolerance, and complications of one session of combined chemical peels compared to traditional serial sessions of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peeling in treating melasma. One session of combined chemical peels was carried out at the left side of the face, while six sessions of TCA 15% peel were carried out at the right side of the face every 10 days. The Modified Melasma Area and Severity Index (MASI) score was calculated at baseline (before starting peeling sessions), after one month (at the fourth TC

BACKGROUND: Glycolic acid (GA) is a commonly used superficial peel with higher concentrations and lower pH levels leading to a stronger effect despite a higher risk of adverse effects (AE), which include burning, pain, itching, erythema, and edema.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of a novel protective complex (NPC) to reduce facial AEs following a GA chemical peel treatment.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty volunteers were selected for the study. A pair of numbered kits were supplied by and randomly assigned to be applied to each side of a patient’s face with either

Chemical peels belong to a group of cutaneous resurfacing procedures that are used in the treatment of photoageing, inflammatory dermatoses, epidermal proliferations, pigmentary disorders and scarring. This review describes best current practice, highlights recent advances in chemical peel technology and discusses the recommended uses for different peel types. It also presents the results of a survey of the chemical peeling practices of 30 Australian dermatologists.

BACKGROUND: Melasma is a common chronic, relapsing pigmentary disorder that causes psychological impact. Chemical peels are a well-known therapeutic modality used for accelerating the treatment of melasma.
OBJECTIVE: To review the published evidence on the efficacy and safety of chemical peels in the treatment of melasma.
METHODS: A systematic review was done. A meta-analysis could not be done due to the heterogeneity of data.
RESULT: The authors conducted a PubMed search and included prospective case series of more than 10 cases and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that have studied the

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peeling may be effective in solar lentigines, but with concerns regarding potential tumorigenesis. Cryopeeling would be better with improving the whole sun-damaged skin. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of cryopeeling and TCA 35% peeling for treatment of solar lentigines and assess their influence on the number of epidermal Langerhans cells (LC). Twenty-five patients were treated with TCA 35% and cryopeeling on the right and left hands, respectively. Two sessions were done 3 weeks apart. Evaluations were scheduled at weeks 0, 3, and 6. BACKGROUND: Laser resurfacing and chemical peeling represent 2 widely practiced skin rejuvenation techniques, each with distinct mechanisms and risk profiles. Despite their widespread use, comparative efficacy and safety across various dermatologic conditions remains incompletely synthesized. This systematic review and meta-analysis compares these modalities to guide evidence-based decision-making.
METHODS: Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, the authors searched major databases through October of 2024 for studies directly comparin

BACKGROUND: Facial acne scars are a prevalent concern, leading to the development of various treatment modalities.
OBJECTIVES: This review aims to explore the latest advancements in the treatment of facial acne scars, focusing on both surgical and non-surgical methods.
METHODS: The non-surgical treatments reviewed include topical medications (such as retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids) and non-invasive procedures (like microdermabrasion and chemical peels). Surgical options discussed are punch excision, subcision, and fractional laser treatments.
RESULTS: Combination therapy, integrating bot

BACKGROUND: Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with high incidence and recurrence.
AIM: To study the efficacy of 30% supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) in the treatment of acne, especially its effect on facial sebum secretion and the skin barrier.
METHODS: Chemical peeling treatment with SSA using self-contrast was performed every 2 weeks for a total of four treatments in 25 patients. VISIA photographs and skin parameter measurements were recorded at every treatment, with a 2-week follow-up after the last treatment. We performed skin biopsy and immunohistochemical staining to detec
