A preliminary investigation of the effects of labour inducing plant, Cissampelos mucronata, on the outcomes of pregnancy using rat models.

BACKGROUND: The use of traditional remedies in pregnancy has been associated with bad obstetric outcomes including uterine rupture and foetal distress. These outcomes may ultimately lead to maternal and child mortality or morbidity. Few studies have been done to measure the effects of various herbs in pregnant women or a developing fetus. This study investigated the effects of the commonly used labour inducing plant, Cissampelos mucronata, on pregnancy outcomes using a rat model. METHODS: Pregnant female rats were divided into 3 groups of 10 each. The first group was the control. The second g

Bronchodilator activity of an aqueous fraction of an ethanol extract of the leaves of Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl. (Menispermaceae) in the guinea pig.

The bronchodilator activity of an aqueous fraction (AF) of a 70% hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl. was evaluated in the guinea-pig. The AF inhibited the spontaneous tone of the trachea (IC(50), 13.9 μg/ml), which was potentiated (IC(50), 4.6 μg/ml) by 3-isobutyl-l-methylxanthine, blocked by β(2) adrenoceptor blocking agent timolol, but unaffected by removal of epithelium or addition of NG-Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester or methylene blue. The AF also antagonized contractions induced by carbachol, capsaicin and arachidonic acid in normal trachea and by ovalbum

Transcriptome analysis and connectivity mapping of Cissampelos pareira L. provides molecular links of ESR1 modulation to viral inhibition.

Bioactive fractions obtained from medicinal plants which have been used for the treatment of multiple diseases could exert their effects by targeting common pathways. Prior knowledge of their usage could allow us to identify novel molecular links. In this study, we explored the molecular basis of action of one such herbal formulation Cissampelos pareira L. (Cipa), used for the treatment of female hormone disorders and fever. Transcriptomic studies on MCF7 cell lines treated with Cipa extract carried out using Affymetrix arrays revealed a downregulation of signatures of estrogen response potent

Exploring plant-based dengue therapeutics: from laboratory to clinic.

Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne virus that causes dengue fever, a significant public health concern in many tropical and subtropical regions. Dengue is endemic in more than 100 countries, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Each year, up to 400 million people get infected with dengue. Approximately 100 million people get sick from infection, and 40,000 die from severe dengue. Unfortunately, dengue vaccine development is also marred with various complicating factors, as the forefront candidate vaccine performed unsatisfactorily. Moreover, the only licensed vaccin

Milonine, a Morphinandienone Alkaloid, Has Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Effects by Inhibiting TNF-α and IL-1β Production.

Milonine is a morphinandienone alkaloid from Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl (Menispermaceae), a plant used in Brazil to treat inflammatory disorders. In this study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of milonine (MIL) by using classical experimental models of inflammation and nociception. The results showed that MIL reduced the paw edema formation induced by lipopolysaccharide, prostaglandin E2, and bradykinin, without interfering with the serotonin-induced edema. With respect to the nociception experiments, MIL decreased the exudate into the peritoneum induced by acetic

Milonine attenuates the lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury in mice by modulating the Akt/NF-κB signaling pathways.

Acute lung injury is an inflammation that triggers acute respiratory distress syndrome with perialveolar neutrophil infiltration, alveolar-capillary barrier damage, and lung edema. Activation of the toll-like receptor 4 complex (TLR4/MD2) and its downstream signaling pathways are responsible for the cytokine storm and cause alveolar damage. Due to the complexity of this pulmonary inflammation, a defined pharmacotherapy has not been established. Thus, this study evaluated the anti-inflammatory potential of milonine, an alkaloid of Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl, in an experimental model of lung

Warifteine and methylwarifteine inhibited the type 2 immune response on combined allergic rhinitis and asthma syndrome (CARAS) experimental model through NF-кB pathway.

CARAS is an airway inflammation of allergic individuals, with a type 2 immune response. The pharmacotherapy is based on drugs with relevant side effects. Thus, the goal of this study evaluated the alkaloids warifteine (War) and methylwarifteine (Mwar) from Cissampelos sympodialis in CARAS experimental model. Therefore, BALB/c mice were ovalbumin (OVA) sensitized and challenged and treated with both alkaloids. Treated animals showed a decrease (p < 0.05) of allergic signs as sneezing and nasal rubbings, histamine nasal hyperreactivity, and inflammatory cell migration into the nasal (NALF) and t
