As the world's population is aging, and since access to ambient sensors has become easier over the past years, activity recognition in smart home installations has gained increased scientific interest. The majority of published papers in the literature focus on single-resident activity recognition. While this is an important area, especially when focusing on elderly people living alone, multi-resident activity recognition has potentially more applications in smart homes. Activity recognition for multiple residents acting concurrently can be treated as a multilabel classification problem (MLC).

OBJECTIVE: Type 1 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes among children; however, the proportion of cases of childhood type 2 diabetes is increasing. In Canada, the National Diabetes Surveillance System (NDSS) uses administrative health data to describe trends in the epidemiology of diabetes, but does not specify diabetes type. The objective of this study was to validate algorithms to classify diabetes type in children <20 yr identified using the NDSS methodology.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We applied the NDSS case definition to children living in British Columbia between 1 April 1996 and 31

In this paper, we present a powerful, compact electrocardiogram (ECG) classification algorithm for cardiac arrhythmia diagnosis that addresses the current reliance on deep learning and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in ECG analysis. This work aims to reduce the demand for deep learning, which often requires extensive computational resources and large labeled datasets. Our approach introduces an artificial neural network (ANN) with a simple architecture combined with a compact, interpretable feature-engineering pipeline. A key contribution of this work is the incorporation of 17 engineere

This article discusses the algorithm to measure electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiration simultaneously and to have the diagnostic potentiality for sleep apnoea from ECG recordings. The algorithm is composed by the combination with the three particular scale transform of a(j)(t), u(j)(t), o(j)(a(j)) and the statistical Fourier transform (SFT). Time and magnitude scale transforms of a(j)(t), u(j)(t) change the source into the periodic signal and tau(j) = o(j)(a(j)) confines its harmonics into a few instantaneous components at tau(j) being a common instant on two scales between t and tau(j). Hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH) is a developmental asymmetry characterized by three-dimensional enlargement of one half of the mandible. The hyperplastic side usually involves the condyle, condylar neck, ramus, and body, with the anomaly terminating abruptly at the symphysis. The malformation results in the clinical presentation of ipsilateral enlargement of the mandible and tilted occlusal plane, associated with a deviated chin to the contralateral side. Since the first case report of HH in the English literature in 1836, various terminology and classifications were used. In this study, the a

OBJECTIVE: Recently, a new consensus algorithm for classification of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) and PAN had been proposed by Watt et al. for epidemiological studies. In order to evaluate this algorithm, the current study used the algorithm to reclassify the patients with AAV and PAN in our centre.
METHODS: Five hundred and fifty Chinese patients with primary systemic vasculitis diagnosed in our referral diagnostic centre during the past 10 years were retrospectively studied. Four hundred and ninety-three out of 550 were ANCA positive. We compared the new consensus algorithm and the 1994

Microarray technology has transformed the biotechnological research to next level in the recent years. It provides the expression levels of various genes involved in a particular disease. Prostate cancer disease turned into life threatening cancer. The genes causing this disease are identified through the classification methods. These gene expression data have problems like high dimensional with low sample size which imposes active challenges in the existing classification algorithms. Feature selection techniques are applied in order to address the dimensionality issues. . This paper aims in a

Accurate classification of Trypanosoma brucei bloodstream forms, slender and stumpy, is essential for understanding parasite biology and transmission dynamics. Traditional classification methods rely on flourescent transgenic parasites, as distinguishing these forms visually is highly challenging. To address this, we developed a semi-automated deep-learning pipeline that segments and classifies T. brucei bloodstream forms from unlabeled microscopic images. The pipeline consists of two key stages: (1) a segmentation step using the Cellpose algorithm, which detects and extracts individual parasi

Cardiac auscultation is the key screening procedure to detect and identify cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). One of many steps to automatically detect CVDs using auscultation, concerns the detection and delimitation of the heart sound boundaries, a process known as segmentation. Whether to include or not a segmentation step in the signal classification pipeline is nowadays a topic of discussion. Up to our knowledge, the outcome of a segmentation algorithm has been used almost exclusively to align the different signal segments according to the heartbeat. In this paper, the need for a heartbeat al

The objective of this work was to perform image-based classification of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) based on their demographic, geometric, and biomechanical attributes. We retrospectively reviewed existing demographics and abdominal computed tomography angiography images of 100 asymptomatic and 50 symptomatic AAA patients who received an elective or emergent repair, respectively, within 1-6 months of their last follow up. An in-house script developed within the MATLAB computational platform was used to segment the clinical images, calculate 53 descriptors of AAA geometry, and generate vol

Misclassification of halitosis frequently results in ineffective treatment. A clinical classification system is presented that organizes halitosis into eight types based on etiology and clinical presentation. Intraoral causes include tongue biofilm, periodontal disease, peri-implant disease, and xerostomia-associated halitosis, while extraoral causes comprise airway related conditions and metabolic/systemic disorders with pulmonary elimination of bloodborne compounds. Perceptual conditions are categorized as pseudohalitosis and halitophobia. A diagnostic workflow is proposed to guide clinician

Background: In the United States, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant cause of mortality. As far as we know, it is a chronic, inflammatory lung condition that cuts off airflow to the lungs. Many symptoms have been reported for such a disease: breathing problems, coughing, wheezing, and mucus production. Patients with COPD might be at risk, since they are more susceptible to heart disease and lung cancer. Methods: This study reviews COPD diagnosis utilizing various machine learning (ML) classifiers, such as Logistic Regression (LR), Gradient Boosting Classifier (GBC),

There has been considerable recent research into the connection between Parkinson's disease (PD) and speech impairment. Recently, a wide range of speech signal processing algorithms (dysphonia measures) aiming to predict PD symptom severity using speech signals have been introduced. In this paper, we test how accurately these novel algorithms can be used to discriminate PD subjects from healthy controls. In total, we compute 132 dysphonia measures from sustained vowels. Then, we select four parsimonious subsets of these dysphonia measures using four feature selection algorithms, and map these

INTRODUCTION: Breach of the palate leading to a pathological communication between the oral cavity and the nose is known as oronasal communication/fistula (ONC). Various methods for the closure of communications have been reported in the literature, such as obturators, local flaps, and microvascular surgery. Due to the lack of a classification system for ONC, the purpose of this study was to trace an operative algorithm in a group of patients affected by ONC who underwent surgical reconstruction of the oronasal communication.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted for all patients affec

Clinicians and scientists at St George's University Hospital have collaborated to develop a classification algorithm for primary lymphatic anomalies. Instruction is offered on how to apply the algorithm in clinical practice to refine the diagnosis of primary lymphedema and guide on genetic testing and management. It can also be used to interpret mutation testing results of uncertain significance. The algorithm has evolved as more genes have been discovered, and it remains a "work in progress" as further discoveries are made. This transformational approach has revolutionized the understanding a

BACKGROUND: Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a rare condition in which one or more paranasal sinuses are pathologically hyperaerated. Patients commonly present with an aesthetic complaint, however it has been associated with several serious conditions. The etiology is largely theoretical and the management remains unstandardized, potentially leading to missed diagnoses. This article aims to establish a presumptive classification scheme and management algorithm based on a comprehensive review of the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of all available publications on the search
