Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis-Associated Deaths - United States, 2020-2023.

Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is a preventable, progressive occupational lung disease caused by inhaling respirable coal mine dust, a complex mixture commonly containing coal, crystalline silica, and other silicate minerals. Early pneumoconiosis can be asymptomatic, but advanced disease often leads to disability and premature death. To describe CWP-associated mortality among U.S. residents aged ≥15 years by industry and occupation, CDC conducted an exploratory analysis of National Vital Statistics System multiple cause-of-death data for 2020-2023, the most recent years that include inform

Does coal-to-gas policy reduce air pollution? Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China.

Whether the use of cleaner energy can reduce air pollution is the focus of debate among scholars, but there is still no unanimous conclusion. This study seeks to explore the net impact of coal-to-gas policy, an energy transition policy in China, on air pollution. Utilizing prefecture-level city data from 2003 to 2016, we apply the PSM-DID method to estimate the policy's net impact. Further, we examine the dynamic effects of coal-to-gas policy and its impact mechanism on air pollution. The results show that 1) The coal-to-gas policy has an average reduction effect of 31.3%, 36%, 0.3%, and 33.1%

Combustion properties and desulfurization of high sulfur containing Indian and Nepali coals using lime-based products.

Many brick industries and industrial boilers in South Asia use high sulfur containing coal as the major fuel. The combustion of these coals leads to serious environmental pollution and health problems. The SO2 emissions from the combustion of coal can be captured by adding lime-based desulfurizing agents (DSA) to the coal briquettes. The physical and combustion characteristics of some Indian (Bihar, Assam) and Nepali (Dang, Abidhara, Lignite) coal have been studied. The process of desulfurization of these coals was investigated using calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate as DSA. Calcium carb

Coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals to solve problems of air pollution by coal thermal power stations and boiler plants: An introductory review.

This introductory study presents the analysis of the environmental, economic and energy performance indicators of burning high-potential coal water slurries containing petrochemicals (CWSP) instead of coal, fuel oil, and natural gas at typical thermal power stations (TPS) and a boiler plant. We focus on the most hazardous anthropogenic emissions of coal power industry: sulfur and nitrogen oxides. The research findings show that these emissions may be several times lower if coal and oil processing wastes are mixed with water as compared to the combustion of traditional pulverized coal, even of

Effective incineration of fuel-waste slurries from several related industries.

This study is based on the analysis of a set of industrial sectors (coal processing, wood processing, transport, oil, and water treatment) in order to identify the amount and type of combustible waste suitable for incineration. The main ignition and combustion parameters of these wastes have been experimentally obtained from their direct individual incineration in the original form and as part of a slurry based on wastewater. It has been established that a set of parameters allow waste-derived fuel mixtures to compete with coal dust and fuel oil with an environmental advantage. In particular,

Chemistry of Trace Inorganic Elements in Coal Combustion Systems: A Century of Discovery.

Coal fueled the Industrial Revolution and the global expansion of electrification in the 20th century. In the 21st century, coal use has declined in North America and Europe, but continues to increase in Asia. Coal contains many of the elements of the Periodic Table, in percent-levels or in trace amounts (ppm, ppb). The impact of many of these elements on the environment via air and water discharges from coal-fired plants has been studied with decades of research on their chemical transformations within combustion systems and on their fates upon reintroduction into the environment. The transfo

Coal as the world's dominant energy source and its role in the energy transformation and regulations of European Green Deal.

One of the main factors driving faster rates of climate change is coal burning. Coal has been a staple in global energy production for hundreds of years. In 2023, coal accounted for 35.51 % of global electricity production (in US 16,2 % of electricity comes from coal. Coal power generation is a major cause of greenhouse gas and toxic emissions into the atmosphere, adversely affecting human health, ecosystem degradation, water resources and air quality. Coal consumption leads to more than 15 billion tons of global CO2 emissions annually. Coal-fired power plants account for about 20 % of these e
