Human diet and cognition.

UNLABELLED: Cognition influences what, when and how much we eat, which in turn affects the brain and hence cognition. In this overview, focusing mainly on the human literature, we start by examining cognitive influences on food and eating. This includes food preferences and choices (e.g., effects of learning, advertising, and cultural taboos), food habits relating to when and how much to eat (e.g., the concept of meals, dieting, and hunger strikes), the perception of food (e.g., the influence of appearance, food labels, and conceptions of naturalness), and how food perception is influenced by

Cognition, emotion, and attention.

Deficits of attention, emotion, and cognition occur in individuals with alcohol abuse and addiction. This review elucidates the concepts of attention, emotion, and cognition and references research on the underlying neural networks and their compromise in alcohol use disorder. Neuroimaging research on adolescents with family history of alcoholism contributes to the understanding of pre-existing brain structural conditions and characterization of cognition and attention processes in high-risk individuals. Attention and cognition interact with other brain functions, including perceptual selectio

Cognition in liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction has been observed in a range of liver diseases including chronic hepatitis C virus, alcoholic liver disease, primary biliary cirrhosis and Wilson's disease. Such dysfunction may range from mild cognitive changes to overt hepatic encephalopathy, and represents a significant complication of liver disease that may negatively impact the patient's quality of life, and normal activities of daily living (e.g., driving). METHOD: This article reviews the published evidence relating to cognitive dysfunction in liver disease. OUTCOME: Issues of definition, diagnosis, e

Behaviour, cognition and epilepsy.

Cognitive and behavioural impairments have been observed as a consequence even of single seizures. In individuals with high seizure frequency, such impairments may accumulate and have a much greater impact on daily life than hitherto suspected. In addition, the risk of behavioural impairments is increased for some seizure types, such as secondary generalized seizures. Moreover, for all epilepsy types, increased risk is associated with persistent or poorly controlled seizures. Clinical studies show that cognitive impairments induced by seizures are reversible for most seizure types when seizure

Vitamin B12 for cognition.

BACKGROUND: An association between neuropsychiatric disorders and vitamin B12 deficiency has been recognized since 1849 when pernicious anaemia was first described. It has been suggested that deficiency of vitamin B12 might contribute to age-associated cognitive impairment. Low serum vitamin B12 concentrations are found in more than 10% of older people. A high prevalence of low serum vitamin B12 levels, and other indicators of vitamin B12 deficiency have been reported among people with Alzheimer's disease. A review is needed of trials assessing effects of vitamin B12 supplementation on cogniti

Cognition disconnected: the influence of domain-general cognition (g) in lesion-deficit mapping.

Lesion-deficit mapping is a premier technique for dissociating neural correlates of cognitive functions. However, the contribution of domain-general cognition (g) to the performance of virtually all complex behavioral tasks may encumber such efforts. This possibility has been largely unexplored. Here, we examined the influence of g in lesion-deficit mapping using a combination of structural equation modeling, lesion-behavior mapping (LBM), and structural lesion network mapping (sLNM) and functional lesion network mapping (fLNM). We modeled latent variables for visuospatial ability, processing

Exercise, cognition, and affective disorders.

Anxiety and depressive disorders are major contributors to global disability and are frequently accompanied by cognitive impairment, stress-system dysregulation, and cardiometabolic comorbidity. Although pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments remain central, limited access, partial response, and persistent residual symptoms highlight the need for integrative and scalable interventions. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on physical activity and structured exercise as systemic biological interventions for depression and anxiety, integrating clinical findings with mechanistic p

Quantum cognition and projection bias.

The innovative application of quantum mechanical concepts of probability to cognitive science has provided new, meaningful ways to more accurately model human decision making. Leveraging the dynamic geometric principles associated with the mathematics of quantum theory, we use the idea of probability interference to explain projection bias and its violations of the classical law of total probability and expected utility theory. In particular, Khrennikov's contextual probability model is successfully applied to the study by Read & van Leeuwen on hunger and projection bias. We conclude that prob

[Epilepsy, cognition and ketogenic diet].

INTRODUCTION: Most individuals with epilepsy will respond to pharmacologic treatment; however, approximately 20-30% will develop medically refractory epilepsy. Cognitive side effects of antiepileptic drugs are common and can negatively affect tolerability, compliance, and long-term retention of the treatment. Ketogenic diet is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for these children with refractory epilepsy without any negative effect on cognition or behavior. AIM: To review the current state of experimental and clinical data concerning the neuroprotective and cognitive effects of the ket

Imaging natural cognition in action.

The primary function of the human brain is arguably to optimize the results of our motor actions in an ever-changing environment. Our cognitive processes and supporting brain dynamics are inherently coupled both to our environment and to our physical structure and actions. To investigate human cognition in its most natural forms demands imaging of brain activity while participants perform naturally motivated actions and interactions within a full three-dimensional environment. Transient, distributed brain activity patterns supporting spontaneous motor actions, performed in pursuit of naturally

Cognition, empathy, and sexual offending.

Most empathy research in the forensic context has assumed that empathy has two components. In this two-component model, the cognitive component involves perspective taking, and the affective component involves experiencing appropriate emotion. In this review, we identify how this assumption has both dominated and limited empathy research with offenders, nearly all of which has been conducted with sexual offenders. We propose instead that five components are involved in the experience of empathy: perspective taking, the ability to experience emotion, a belief that others are worthy of compassio

Conceptualizing functional cognition in stroke.

BACKGROUND: Up to 65% of individuals demonstrate poststroke cognitive impairments, which may increase hospital stay and caregiver burden. Randomized stroke clinical trials have emphasized physical recovery over cognition. Neuropsychological assessments have had limited utility in randomized clinical trials. These issues accentuate the need for a measure of functional cognition (the ability to accomplish everyday activities that rely on cognitive abilities, such as locating keys, conveying information, or planning activities). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to present the process used to

Cognition checklist for mania-revised.

The Cognitive Checklist for Mania-Revised (CCL-M-R), which measures the severity of maladaptive beliefs and cognitions associated with mania, was administered to 35 inpatients with a major depressive disorder, 20 inpatients with a schizoaffective disorder, and 45 inpatients with a bipolar I disorder to determine whether cognitions associated with mania differentiate patients who have most recently experienced either manic, mixed, or depressive episodes. The CCL-M-R is composed of four subscales assessing (a) exaggerated beliefs about self-worth (Myself), (b) grandiose beliefs about interperson

Idiopathic epileptic syndromes and cognition.

Epilepsy is frequently associated with cognitive impairments which result from various interacting factors. The present paper deals with the contribution of neuropsychology to the characterization of the type of epilepsy and the possible mechanisms underlying idiopathic epileptic syndromes. The non-lesional, so-called idiopathic epilepsies, constitute an interesting model for assessing the relationship between epileptiform EEG discharges and cognition. Among the idiopathic generalized epilepsies, disorders of social integration and personality have been frequently reported in juvenile myocloni

Molecular genetics of human cognition.

Our understanding of the molecular underpinnings of human cognition has been greatly aided by the convergent synergy of clinical, genetic, and signaling research. By identifying the mutated genes that give rise to syndromes of mental retardation or cognitive defects in patients, and by placing the associated gene products within signaling networks, researchers are piecing together how learning occurs and how memories are formed and sustained.
