Cognitive-behavioral therapy for pathological gamblers.

Few studies have evaluated efficacy of psychotherapies for pathological gambling. Pathological gamblers (N = 231) were randomly assigned to (a) referral to Gamblers Anonymous (GA), (b) GA referral plus a cognitive- behavioral (CB) workbook, or (c) GA referral plus 8 sessions of individual CB therapy. Gambling and related problems were assessed at baseline, 1 month later, posttreatment, and at 6- and 12-month follow-ups. CB treatment reduced gambling relative to GA referral alone during the treatment period and resulted in clinically significant improvements, with some effects maintained throug

Blended Cognitive Behavioral Therapy versus Standard Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Unipolar Depression: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the effectiveness of blended cognitive behavioral therapy (bCBT) with a digital health application (elona therapy) compared to standard cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for unipolar depression in outpatient care. METHODS: This multicenter, randomized, two-arm controlled trial recruited 283 adult patients with unipolar depression in Germany. Patients were randomized to receive either standard face-to-face CBT combined with the digital health application (bCBT group) or standard face-to-face CBT alone. Symptoms of depression and anxiety, along with other pat

Fibromyalgia: can online cognitive behavioral therapy help?

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven useful in treating fibromyalgia, depression, and anxiety. Computerized delivery of CBT allows increased access to such therapy. This study assessed the effect of internet-based CBT on Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) composite scores and tender point assessments. METHODS: This 12-week randomized controlled trial included patients ≥18 years of age with 1990 American College of Rheumatology criteria for fibromyalgia and mild to moderate depression and anxiety. A total of 56 subjects were randomized into either a 6-week internet-ba

Cognitive-behavioral therapy versus other therapies: redux.

Despite the evidence suggesting that all treatments intended to be therapeutic are equally efficacious, the conjecture that one form of treatment, namely cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), is superior to all other treatment persists. The purpose of the current study was to (a) reanalyze the clinical trials from an earlier meta-analysis that compared CBT to 'other therapies' for depression and anxiety (viz., Tolin, 2010) and (b) conduct a methodologically rigorous and comprehensive meta-analysis to determine the relative efficacy of CBT and bona fide non-CBT treatments for adult anxiety disord

Augmentation of cognitive behavioral therapy with pharmacotherapy.

There has long been interest in combining pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). More recently, basic research on fear extinction has led to interest in augmentation of CBT with the N-methyl Daspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor partial agonist D-cycloserine (DCS) for anxiety disorders. In this article, the literature on clinical trials that have combined pharmacotherapy and CBT is briefly reviewed, focusing particularly on the anxiety disorders. The literature on CBT and DCS is then systematically reviewed. A series of randomized placebo-controlled tr

Contemporary antisemitism: Implications for cognitive behavioral therapy.

Recent political movements have been woven into therapy models that include specific ideas considered discriminatory towards Jews. Conceptualized around decolonial models of psychopathology, these frameworks include untested and unassailable assumptions regarding Zionism and Jewish identity that erode the scientific basis of existing evidence-based treatments. We discuss how this movement, with its additional emphasis on activism, promotes a modern form of antisemitism and identity-based discrimination. We conclude with recommendations for addressing this epistemic discrimination.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of debilitating obsessions and compulsions. Cognitive and behavioral models of OCD provide a strong theoretic and empirical foundation for informing effective psychotherapeutic treatment. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for OCD, which includes a deliberate emphasis on exposure and response/ritual prevention, has consistently demonstrated robust efficacy for the treatment of pediatric and adult OCD and is the front-line psychotherapeutic treatment for OCD. Two case vignettes describing CBT for OCD in practice as well as rec

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the Eating Disorders.

Research findings strongly suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy for the eating disorders (CBT-ED) is more effective than other treatments for bulimia nervosa (BN) and for binge eating disorder (BED), although interpersonal psychotherapy appears to be equally effective for BED. Evidence for the effectiveness of CBT-ED for the persistent (adult) form of anorexia nervosa (AN) is insufficient at present and is essentially absent for AN in adolescents except for some evidence from uncontrolled trials. This article begins with an overview of the early studies in the development of CBT-ED that s

[Cognitive behavioral therapy of somatoform autonomic disorders].

The treatment of a somatoform autonomic dysfunction with a psychogenic form of irritable bowel syndrome will be demonstrated on the example of a 16-year-old girl (Sandra) using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). After a comprehensive psychological assessment and identification of the dysfunctional cognitive and behaviour patterns, CBT treatment methods will be described regarding the following problem areas: biased somatic attribution, selective perception of interoceptive stimuli, catastrophization as a thought pattern, avoidance behaviour and maintaining factors within the family system.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder.

Research on the treatment of SAD has progressed so that patients have a choice between two empirically supported modalities of treatment: (1) CBT and (2) pharmacotherapy. Current studies suggest that acute outcome for these treatments is approximately equal, or show subtle advantages for pharmacotherapy, but that CBT offers the advantage of strong maintenance of treatment gains and a relatively promising cost-benefit ratio. Despite this good news, there is concern that these modalities of treatment may be underutilized in clinical practice and that an informed choice of which modality of treat
