Barriers to organ donation in the Jewish community.

It has long been recognized that members of the Jewish community generally do not sign organ donor cards or consent to the donation of the organs of their family members. In order to address this issue, the position of Jewish law on organ donation was examined and a sample of the Jewish population of Toronto was surveyed in an attempt to better understand the reasons for the observed reluctance to donate within this community. The results confirmed that the rate of signing organ donor cards was much lower in the Jewish community than in the general population, and although other reasons do exi

Barriers to post-prostatectomy stress incontinence care: knowledge gaps, patient concerns, and urologist communication.

PURPOSE: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) after radical prostatectomy markedly reduces quality of life, yet care gaps remain. This study evaluated patients' knowledge of treatment options and use of continence aids. METHODS: We analysed follow-up data from the multicentre HAROW study (2013-2018) and a cross-sectional study from Dresden (2021). Included were men up to 15 years after prostatectomy using ≥ 2 pads daily. The survey examined awareness of surgical treatments, continence aids, information sources, and barriers to therapy. RESULTS: Ninety-nine patients participated (HAROW: 62; Dres

Stroke knowledge and barriers to stroke prevention among African Americans: implications for health communication.

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability, especially among African Americans. Yet research on stroke knowledge and barriers to stroke prevention among African Americans is limited. This study used a 50-item questionnaire to conduct structured telephone interviews with 379 African American adults, 50 years or older. The questionnaire included questions on stroke knowledge, stroke risk behaviors, and barriers to stroke prevention. A stroke knowledge score was computed by assigning points for correct responses on knowledge items. The average stroke knowledge score of participants was 10.9,

Confusion, communication, and consent: ELSI barriers to genomics-enhanced remediation in Alberta's oil sands.

While constructed treatment wetland systems (CTWS) and genomics have been identified as viable remediation options for oil sands processed-affected water, researchers have paid limited attention to the priorities of affected groups. To address this gap, we used focus groups to explore the perspectives on CTWS and genomics held by Indigenous Peoples, oil and gas industry employees, CTWS and genomics researchers, and government regulators and policymakers affected by oil sands remediation in northern Alberta. We identify six key concerns: confusion about the options themselves; challenges with c

Assessing Clinical Factors and Communication Barriers Impacting Postoperative Regret in Patients with Pancreatic Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Curative-intent pancreatectomy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) carries high rates of morbidity and recurrence. Patients with operable PDAC face a complex decision of whether to pursue resection. Factors impacting the decision-making process and decisional regret (DR) are relatively unexplored. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with PDAC who underwent curative-intent pancreatectomy at least 6 months prior to study recruitment completed validated surveys assessing DR, health literacy, shared decision-making, and quality of life. RESULTS: Overall, 60 patients (48% female) c

Set Up to Fail? Barriers Impeding Resident Communication Training in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

PURPOSE: Learning to navigate difficult clinical conversations is an essential feature of residency training, yet much of this learning occurs "on the job," often without the formative, multisource feedback trainees need. To generate insight into how on-the-job training influences trainee performance, the perspectives of parents and health care providers (HCPs) who engaged in or observed difficult conversations with Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) trainees were explored. METHOD: The iterative data generation and analysis process was informed by constructivist grounded theory. Parents (n =

Barriers and Facilitators to Using Information and Communication Technology Among Older Adults in Rural China.

China is experiencing rapid aging and digitalization. This study examines how older adults in rural China negotiate the adoption of information and communication technology within their specific sociocultural context. Findings from focus groups and in-depth interviews reveal that digital exclusion is relationally produced and culturally embedded. While mobile Internet expansion has narrowed the access gap, persistent disparities are intensified by the emotional costs of help-seeking, particularly the fear of losing face in peer networks and the burden of asymmetric intergenerational knowledge

Strategies and barriers in radiation risk communication in medical imaging: A scoping review of radiographers' practices.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation risk communication allows patients to make an informed decision, enhancing their autonomy during diagnostic imaging procedures. It can also reduce anxiety and improve patient cooperation. However, evidence suggests that radiographers often provide inadequate or unclear information about radiation risks. Several barriers further limit effective communication, thereby undermining patient awareness, informed decision-making, and overall patient-centred care. This study explored strategies and barriers in radiation risk communication. METHODS: A scoping review was conducte
