Sperm competition in humans: mate guarding behavior negatively correlates with ejaculate quality.

In species where females mate with multiple males, the sperm from these males must compete to fertilise available ova. Sexual selection from sperm competition is expected to favor opposing adaptations in males that function either in the avoidance of sperm competition (by guarding females from rival males) or in the engagement in sperm competition (by increased expenditure on the ejaculate). The extent to which males may adjust the relative use of these opposing tactics has been relatively neglected. Where males can successfully avoid sperm competition from rivals, one might expect a decrease

Effects of diazepam and flumazenil on food competition behavior in high- and low-aggression pigeons.

The food competition interaction test performed with food-restricted pigeons with previously consolidated dominance is a useful tool for the study of offensive and defensive social aggression. In the present study, we examined the effect of GABA-A-benzodiazepine (BZD) receptor manipulation on aggression, emotion, feeder control, and eating behavior in high- and low-aggression female pigeons maintained at 80% of their normal weight and exposed to food competition interactions. The pigeons were divided into pairs by previously ranked high-aggression females (total time spent in aggression over 6

Dynamic competitive mechanism of spatial representations in implicit and explicit numerical processing: Evidence from behavior and ERPs.

Debate has long persisted regarding whether the SNARC effect represents a stable representation in long-term memory (LTM) or a dynamic construction in working memory (WM). Adopting an integrative perspective, this study proposes that the SNARC effect is a dynamic instantiation of LTM templates within WM. By introducing the SPoARC effect as a competitive reference and utilizing event-related potentials (ERPs), we compared the mechanisms underlying implicit (parity judgment) and explicit (magnitude comparison) numerical processing. Behavioral results revealed a significant trade-off between the

A pilot study of a modification EAT-26 questionnaire for screening pathological eating behavior in competitive athletes.

This study deals with pathological forms of eating behavior and disorders of athletes with the aim to verify a newly created questionnaire method focused on their screening. First, a detailed analysis of one of the most frequently used methods, EAT-26, was carried out, which was subsequently reworked into a newly created questionnaire that should meet the criteria for application to a group of competitive athletes. This new questionnaire was then verified on a group of athletes in risky sports disciplines. It was distributed among athletes of aesthetic sports, specifically among aerobics (gymn

A Search for Anti-Naegleria fowleri Agents Based on Competitive Exclusion Behavior of Microorganisms in Natural Aquatic Environments.

Naegleria fowleri causes deadly primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in humans. Humans obtain the infection by inhaling water or dust contaminated with amebae into the nostrils, wherefrom the pathogen migrates via the olfactory nerve to cause brain inflammation and necrosis. Current PAM treatment is ineffective and toxic. Seeking new effective and less toxic drugs for the environmental control of the amoeba population to reduce human exposure is logical for the management of N. fowleri infection. On the basis of the concept of competitive exclusion, where environmental microorganisms comp

The genetic liability to stress and postweaning isolation have a competitive influence on behavioral organization in rats.

Rats housed in social isolation postweaning (isolates) show profound behavioral and neurobiological differences when compared to socially housed rats (socials). Fischer rats (F344) relative to Lewis rats are hyperresponsive and significantly more susceptible to stressful stimuli. This investigation tested the hypothesis that the behavioral effects of postweaning isolation are more pronounced in a strain of rats with high susceptibility to stress compared to a strain with low susceptibility to stress. Seventy male Sprague-Dawley, Lewis, and F344 rats were housed individually or in groups at wea

A Review of the Mechanical Behavior of Magnesium Alloys in Compression: From Mechanistic Competition to Structural Regulation.

Magnesium alloys that are low density and have a high specific strength are widely utilized as lightweight structural materials. Due to their hexagonal close-packed crystal structure, plastic deformation in magnesium alloys is strongly limited in dislocation slip and mainly accommodated by deformation twinning, which results in distinct mechanical anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry. This paper, centered on mechanism competition and microstructure regulation, systematically reviews the recent progress in the compressive mechanical responses of magnesium alloys. Key results reveal the

Effects of Personality and Behavioral Syndromes on Competition for Social Hierarchical Status in Anemonefish Amphiprion clarkii.

In this study, the behavioral ethogram of Amphiprion clarkii during the growth phase prior to sexual differentiation was summarized based on behavioral observations in three social environments. These behaviors can be classified into four categories: in addition to normal behaviors, the other three categories of behaviors-threatening, agonistic, and appeasing behaviors-represent different intentions in interactions with other individuals. Subsequently, the personalities of each individual were assessed by testing their reactions to intruders. These individuals mainly exhibited two distinct per

Rivalry and admiration-seeking in a social competition: From traits to behaviors through contextual cues.

To gain social status, humans employ two strategies, rivalry and admiration-seeking, and these strategies are over-expressed in trait narcissism, according to the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Concept (NARC) and the Status Pursuit in Narcissism (SPIN) model. Whether one engages in rivalry or admiration-seeking behaviors is thought to depend on the interaction between underlying traits and status-relevant social cues, with status threats encouraging rivalry and status-boosting experiences encouraging admiration-seeking. However, experimental studies of how traits and environment influence

Scavenging behavior and interspecific competition decrease offspring fitness of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are well-studied biocontrol agents of soil-dwelling arthropod pests. The insecticidal efficiency of EPNs is modulated by food web dynamics. EPNs can reproduce in freeze-killed insect larvae, even in competition with free-living bacterivorous nematodes (FLBNs) in the genus Oscheius. The objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of EPNs as scavengers when competing with free-living saprophagous nematodes and fungi, and to determine the possible impact on subsequent EPN offspring fitness. Live and freeze-killed larvae of Galleria mellonella were used t

Variability in behavior and production among dairy cows fed under differing levels of competition.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of differing levels of competition for feed access on group-housed dairy cows, and on variations in behavior and productivity between individuals within each group. Eighteen lactating Holstein cows, averaging 77 ± 20 d in milk with a production of 46 ± 7 kg/d at the start of the trial, were divided into subgroups of 3 and fed a total mixed ration 3×/d. Groups were exposed to each of 3 competition levels: high (3 cows:1 feed bin), moderate (3 cows:2 feed bins), and low (3 cows:3 feed bins). Treatments were assigned in random order accor

Influence of Market Competition on Tetracycline Pricing and Impact of Price Increases on Clinician Prescribing Behavior.

Oral tetracyclines are commonly used for acne and other conditions. Recent generic price increases threaten access to these medications. Using the OptumInsight Clinformatics DataMart, we retrospectively evaluated the underlying factors behind these price increases for oral tetracylines using the framework of a competitive market and evaluated the impact of these price increases on prescribing practices. Between 2011 and 2013, the mean cost of doxycycline hyclate prescriptions increased from $7.16 to $139.89 and the mean out-of-pocket cost increased by $9.69. A comparable cost increase was not

Competitive Sports Participation and Its Association with Glycemic Control and Disordered Eating Behaviors in Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes Running: Competitive Sports, Glycemic Control T1D.

PURPOSE: Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) often face unique challenges in maintaining glycemic control, with a higher risk of disordered eating behaviors (DEB). While physical activity may be associated with improved metabolic outcomes, its relationship with DEB in adolescents with T1D remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and prevalence of DEB among adolescents and young adults with T1D who participate in competitive sports compared to their non-athlete peers. METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study of 245 individuals with T1D, 13 to 21 yea

MK-801 and cognitive functions: Investigating the behavioral effects of a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist.

RATIONALE: MK-801 (dizocilpine) is a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist originally explored for anticonvulsant potential. Despite its original purpose, its amnestic properties led to the development of pivotal models of various cognitive impairments widely employed in research and greatly impacting scientific progress. MK-801 offers several advantages; however, it also presents drawbacks, including inducing dose-dependent hyperlocomotion or ambiguous effects on anxiety, which can impact the interpretation of behavioral research results. OBJECTIVES: The present review attempts to summari

Perception of Health Problems Among Competitive Runners: A Qualitative Study of Cognitive Appraisals and Behavioral Responses.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 2 of every 3 competitive runners sustain at least 1 health problem each season. Most of these problems are nontraumatic injuries with gradual onset. The main known risk indicator for sustaining a new running-related injury episode is a history of a previous injury, suggesting that behavioral habits are part of the causal mechanisms. PURPOSE: Identification of elements associated with purposeful interpretations of body perceptions and balanced behavioral responses may supply vital information for prevention of health problems in runners. This study set out to explore

Intrasexual competition predicts willingness to engage in risky weight loss behaviors: sex differences and similarities.

Intrasexual Competitiveness has been theorized to be related to the development of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) in women. A university sample was used to test the relationship between gender and intrasexual competition (ISC) on the willingness to engage in risky weight-loss behaviors symptomatic of AN or BN. A gender-neutral scale of intrasexual competition was created, allowing for a direct comparison of male and female respondents. The results revealed that greater intrasexual competitiveness in women (but not men) was related to an increased self-reported willingness to en

Green-synthesized magnetite-maghemite nanocomposites for the removal of lead and cadmium from water: competitive adsorption behavior and mechanism studies.

The environment and human health are at risk when industrial waste leaks into aquatic environments. Green-synthesized magnetite-maghemite nanocomposites (GSMMNs) were developed in this study as bio-synthesized adsorbents for removing heavy metals from water. The XRD, TEM, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, BET, VSM, and XPS analyses characterized the nanocomposites. The average particle size was 13.76 nm by TEM analysis with a surface area of 158 m2/g. The functional groups (C = O) and mixed Fe2⁺/Fe3⁺ states contribute to the adsorption confirmed by FT-IR and XPS. Batch studies showed optimal adsorption at pH 6.

Interactive associations of daily music engagement and nutritional behavior with psychological performance in competitive athletes: a 14-day naturalistic diary study.

BACKGROUND: Music engagement and nutrition are each linked to athletes' mental states, yet their combined, day-to-day influence under real training conditions remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether daily music engagement and nutritional behavior are independently and interactively associated with psychological performance in competitive athletes. METHODS: In a 14-day naturalistic digital diary study, 180 competitive athletes (≥18 years) from university teams and sports clubs reported daily music engagement, nutritional behavior, training load, sleep quality, and psycholog

Coach behaviors, coach-athlete relationships, and competitive psychological processes in elite sport: a temporal narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Research on coach behavior, coach-athlete relationships, and competitive psychological processes has developed in partly separate literatures, limiting understanding of how these domains interact across an elite competitive cycle. AIMS: This review examined how these domains are represented across foundation building, competitive maintenance, peak competition, and post-competition transition, while distinguishing direct temporal evidence from interpretive phase placement. METHODS: Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and Scopus were searched for peer-reviewed English-language studies pub
