The immediate effect of repeated loading on the compressive strength of young porcine lumbar spine.

The human spine is exposed to repeated loading during daily activities and more extremely during sports. Despite this, there remains a lack of knowledge regarding the immediate effects on the spine due to this mode of loading. Age-specific spinal injury patterns has been demonstrated and this implies differences in reaction to load mode and load history The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of cyclic pre-loading on the biomechanical properties and fracture patterns of the adolescent spine in an experimental model. Eight functional spinal units from four young porcine s

Risk of vertebral insufficiency fractures in relation to compressive strength predicted by quantitative computed tomography.

Vertebral insufficiency fractures may result from excessive loading of normal and routine loading of osteoporotic spines. Fracture occurs when the mechanical load exceeds the vertebral compressive strength, i.e., the maximum load a vertebra can tolerate. Vertebral compressive strength is determined by trabecular bone density and the size of endplate area. Both parameters can be measured non-invasively by quantitative computed tomography (QCT). In 75 patients compressive strength (i.e., trabecular bone density and endplate area) of the vertebra L3 was determined using QCT. In addition, conventi

Compressive Strength of Iliac Bone ECM Is Not Reduced in Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Increases With Mineralization.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an inheritable, genetic, and collagen-related disorder leading to an increase in bone fragility, but the origin of its "brittle behavior" is unclear. Because of its complex hierarchical structure, bone behaves differently at various length scales. This study aims to compare mechanical properties of human OI bone with healthy control bone at the extracellular matrix (ECM) level and to quantify the influence of the degree of mineralization. Degree of mineralization and mechanical properties were analyzed under dry conditions in 12 fixed and embedded transiliac cre

Biomimetic Design for a Dual Concentric Porous Titanium Scaffold with Appropriate Compressive Strength and Cells Affinity.

In repairing or replacing damaged bones, a dual concentric porous titanium scaffold (P-Tix-y) has emerged as a promising bio-mimic design. Herein, various P-Tix-y were made and sintered with relatively dense (x = 10, 20, or 30% porosity) and loose (y = 45, 55, or 65 porosity) structures. Firstly, NaCl was used as the pore-forming additive and followed by a hydrothermal removal method. The compressive strength of the as-formed P-Tix_y and surface morphology, nanomechanical property, and cells' affinity on the cross-sectioned surface of P-Tix_y (CP-Tix_y) were then characterized. The results dem

Explainable ensemble machine learning framework with particle swarm optimization for predicting compressive strength of CO₂-cured concrete.

The increasing demand for low-carbon construction materials has led to growing interest in carbonation-cured concrete, which enables permanent sequestration of carbon dioxide while influencing material performance. However, predicting the compressive strength of CO₂-cured concrete remains challenging due to complex nonlinear interactions between mixture composition and curing conditions. Unlike previous studies that employed single algorithms with grid search optimization, this study integrates seven advanced ensemble models with metaheuristic optimization, multi-level interpretability analysi

Engineering a semi-interpenetrating constructed xylan-based hydrogel with superior compressive strength, resilience, and creep recovery abilities.

Recent advances in the area of hydrogel synthesis have been directed to enhance the mechanical properties and biocompatibility, which are critical in their use as functional biomaterials. In this work, a green and facile method is introduced to produce a hydrogel based on xylan, a plant-based heteropolysaccharide, that is shown to successfully form hydrogen-bonded, semi-interpenetrating polymer networks with polyvinyl alcohol. Upon crosslinking with sodium trimetaphosphate, the obtained hydrogels achieved an exceptional compressive strength (up to 84.2 MPa at a fracture strain of 90 %), which
