OBJECTIVE: NasoAlveolar molding (NAM) therapy requires an experienced clinician, compliant caregivers, and an infant without underlying medical conditions. In-house computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) digital nasal stents (DNS) are an alternative therapy to NAM developed by the author to reduce the nasal deformity before primary reconstruction surgery when NAM is not suitable, but the patient can still benefit from nasal molding. This paper presents the design, construction, and application of the DNS.
METHOD: CAD/CAM technology was used to design and fabricate th

BACKGROUND: When foreign bodies are located deep within the tissue, removal is often difficult. In recent years, computer-assisted surgery (CAS) has been widely adopted in surgery, including the removal of foreign bodies. Among various techniques, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has been widely employed for hard tissue management in the oral and maxillofacial region, and reports on the application of CAD/CAM technology for procedures involving soft tissues are lacking. In this study, we report a case in which CAD/CAM technology is used to facilitate the

In radiotherapy for eyelid malignant tumors, a shield containing lead has typically been used to protect the eye and prevent complications such as cataracts, blindness, and eyesight deterioration associated with external irradiation. However, the fabrication of the shield involves complex steps, including making an impression of the eye. Recently, digital technologies such as 3-dimensional (3D) scanners have become popular in dentistry. In this report, a shield was fabricated using a dental computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing system based on 3D digital data of the orbital an

Mandibular reconstruction following oral and maxillofacial tumor resection is essential for restoring occlusion and facial appearance. Conventional methods require intraoperative bending of plates, increasing surgical time and risking metal fatigue and plate fracture. Patient-specific implants (PSIs), created via preoperative computed tomography (CT) data and three-dimensional (3D) metal printing, have improved surgical accuracy and reduced operation times. In Japan, Cosmofix® is the only PSI system available, but it lacks osteotomy guides, complicating precise bone cuts and screw insertion an

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), remains a major global public health issue. Current antiretroviral therapy (ART) does not fully eradicate HIV infection, and the virus can establish latent reservoirs in the body that are challenging to eliminate. Consequently, the development of new anti-HIV medications remains a critical necessity. Traditional drug development methods are time-consuming, financially demanding, and carry a high risk of failure. In contrast, computer-aided drug design (CADD) offers a promising alternative by leveraging

The World Health Organization has identified antibiotic resistance as one of the three greatest threats to human health. The need for antibiotics is a pressing matter that requires immediate attention. Here, computer-aided drug design is used to develop a structurally unique antibiotic family targeting holo-acyl carrier protein synthase (AcpS). AcpS is a highly conserved enzyme essential for bacterial survival that catalyzes the first step in lipid synthesis. To the best of our knowledge, there are no current antibiotics targeting AcpS making this drug development program of high interest. We

[structure: see text] A flipping motion rapidly inverts the bent structure of uranyl-salophen compounds and, consequently, causes fast enantiomerization of nonsymmetrically substituted derivatives. This process has been previously slowed by introducing bulky substituents in the imine bond region. Since the resulting complexes dissociate upon chromatographic treatment, an alternative approach to the design and synthesis of robust, nonflipping uranyl-salophen compounds is here described. Such an approach is based on the idea that the flipping motion would be blocked by connecting the para positi

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Huntington's disease are incurable and affect millions of people worldwide. The development of treatments for this unmet clinical need is a major global research challenge. Computer-aided drug design (CADD) methods minimize the huge number of ligands that could be screened in biological assays, reducing the cost, time, and effort required to develop new drugs. In this review, we provide an introduction to CADD and examine the progress in applying CADD and other molecular dock

CONTEXT: Cranioplasty is a frequently performed procedure that uses a variety of reconstruction materials and techniques. In this technical note, we present refinements of computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing inlay cranioplasty.
OBJECTIVE, DESIGN, AND SETTING: In an attempt to decrease complications related to polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) cranioplasty, we gradually made changes to implant design and cranioplasty techniques. These changes include under-contouring of the implant and the use of segmented plates for large defects, microplate fixation for small temporal defects, tem

Shape sensing is useful in the computer aided prosthetic fitting process for two purposes. 1. To input characteristic prosthetic shapes that have been developed over the years through the experience of prosthetists. 2. To provide an accurate and rapid measurement of the anatomical shape of the stump. This paper describes two instruments which have been built to meet these objectives.

A computer-aided sculpting system for use in prosthetics is described. The prosthetist's sculpting tools now consist of a computer, a graphics terminal, a mouse and an on-screen moveable cursor. Accompanied by the system software, these tools allow systematic modification of a primitive socket using techniques analogous to those used by a prosthetist working with rasps and plaster.

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the mechanical properties of dental training teeth with subtractive and additive computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials used to fabricate dental simulation models. Therefore, the three-axis load generated during cutting movements, including drilling and milling performed using a dental handpiece, was measured and compared. The samples were cut vertically downward by 1.5 mm, horizontally by 6 mm, and vertically upward at a constant speed (1 mm/s), while the rotational speed of the bur was maintained at 200,000 rotations pe
