Allergic conjunctivitis and the impact of allergic rhinitis.

Although nasal allergy has been prominent in allergy research, ocular allergy is increasingly recognized as a distinct symptom complex that imposes its own disease burden and reduction in patients' quality of life. In the past year, knowledge of the relationships between allergic conjunctivitis and allergic rhinitis has increased. Allergic conjunctivitis is highly prevalent and has a close epidemiologic relationship with allergic rhinitis. Both conditions also exhibit similar pathophysiologic mechanisms. Pathways of communication are thought to increase the likelihood of an inflammatory reacti

The pathogenesis of allergic conjunctivitis.

The clinical presentation of the various forms of allergic conjunctivitis varies greatly from mild symptoms to severe disease with vision-threatening complications. Although an IgE-mediated type-1 hypersensitivity reaction has been demonstrated or postulated in many types of allergic eye disease, the pathophysiology underlying the allergic conjunctivitides is not fully understood. The variety of currently available treatment options underscores the complexity of the chemical reactions associated with mast cell degranulation and mediator release causing the onset of allergic signs and symptoms.

Therapeutic Targets in Allergic Conjunctivitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is a common condition resulting from exposure to allergens such as pollen, animal dander, or mold. It is typically mediated by allergen-induced crosslinking of immunoglobulin E attached to receptors on primed conjunctival mast cells, which results in mast cell degranulation and histamine release, as well as the release of lipid mediators, cytokines, and chemokines. The clinical result is conjunctival hyperemia, tearing, intense itching, and chemosis. Refractory and chronic cases can result in ocular surface complications that may be vision threatening. Patients who

Epidemiological Aspects Of Allergic Conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis is a common ocular disease which not only affects vision but can also compromise the quality of life of patients to a greater extent. If it is not properly managed it can lead to decreased vision due to corneal complications. This study was conducted to evaluate the epidemiological aspects of allergic conjunctivitis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Ophthalmology department of Federal General Hospital, from June 2018 to June 2020. We enrolled 236 patients of allergic conjunctivitis. Data collection form consisted of a structured qu

Current Knowledge in Allergic Conjunctivitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis is a disease of increasing prevalence that affects both children and adults and causes significant deterioration of their quality of life and sometimes irreversible visual damage. There are various forms of the disease, some are allergen-induced such as seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis, giant papillary conjunctivitis, and contact allergic blepharoconjunctivitis, whereas others are not always explained by allergen exposure, such as vernal keratoconjunctivitis and atopic keratoconjunctivitis. We review their clinical course, characteristics, and differential

Epidemiological aspects of allergic conjunctivitis.

The prevalence of ocular allergies has been increasing worldwide for the past several decades. The geographical distribution and hot spots of rhinoconjunctivitis have been documented in a global survey by the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). ISAAC indicated that Africa, Latin America, and Japan were notable for their high prevalence of rhinoconjunctivitis. The outcomes of follow-up studies of regional differences and the characteristics of allergic conjunctivitis are summarized in this review. Currently, comorbid diseases and socioeconomic and environmental fac

[Skin reactivity in allergic conjunctivitis].

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis is caused by an IgE-mediated mechanism or immediate hypersensitivity due to allergen direct contact on the conjunctival surface of sensitized patients, which elicits mastocyte activation and inflammatory mediators' release. Up to 47% of patients with allergic conjunctivitis can develop sensitization to perennial allergens; more than 24% of patients can experience sensitization to multiple allergens. OBJECTIVE: To estimate positive skin reactivity to allergens in patients diagnosed with allergic conjunctivitis in the allergology outpatient clinic of Centro d

Seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis.

Seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis are IgE-mediated, hypersensitivity conditions characterized by ocular pruritus, epiphora, and hyperemia. Proper diagnosis is usually made clinically based on history and physical examination. Diagnostic procedures are rarely necessary. Non-pharmacological measures, such as environmental modification and proper eye care, should be considered for all patients with allergic conjunctivitis. Pharmacological interventions may also be required. Milder cases can be treated with short-term topical ophthalmic therapy such as a decongestant/ antihistamine co

[Occupational rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis].

Occupational rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the nose, which is characterised by intermittent or persistent symptoms, arising from causes and conditions attributable to a particular work environment and not from stimuli encountered outside the workplace. Its clinical symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, rhinorrhoea, itching, nasal airflow limitation are very similar to the symptoms of allergic rhinitis caused by other (classical) agents. Occupational allergic conjunctivitis is an IgE mediated disease, provoked by a substance in the air of the workplace. Its clinical signs (itchi

Allergic conjunctivitis in Jos-Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) may follow seasonal or perennial pattern. There are climatic and racial risk factors involved in some types of AC. It is more prevalent in warm climatic conditions and among Afro-Caribbeans, Arabs and Asians and less among the White populations. Clinical presentations also seem to follow climatic and genetic predisposition. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of AC and its clinical presentations in a hospital setting in this region in people of all ages. Relationship between allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis (allergic rhinoconjunctivitis) - review.

Allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis are so frequently associated that the need to coin a new name to describe the simultaneous manifestations generated the term allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. The significant impact of rhinoconjunctivitis on the quality of life and the wellbeing of the patients is the reason why the medical community shows a great interest to this disease. Another aspect is the financial burden that is not negligible. The anatomical connection between the organs involved facilitates the propagation of the disease. The allergic pathophysiological mechanisms implicated i

Allergy and Asthma: Allergic Rhinitis and Allergic Conjunctivitis.

Allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis are among the most common conditions seen in family medicine practice. Most cases are due to seasonal allergens, such as pollens, or year-round allergens, such as dust mites, mold, and animal dander. The clinical diagnosis can be made when symptoms of nasal congestion, sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal or ocular pruritus, or eye tearing are present along with physical findings, such as clear rhinorrhea, pale nasal mucosa, or red watery eyes. Patients should be assessed for any comorbid conditions, such as asthma or eczema, and for symptoms that indicate

Recognition of allergic conjunctivitis in patients with allergic rhinitis.

AIMS: To identify the incidence of allergic conjunctivitis in patients with allergic rhinitis. METHODS: One hundred and eighty seven consecutive patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) were directly questioned if they have allergic conjunctivitis (AC) and this was clarified using standard screening questions relating to red, itchy and watery eyes recorded through a total ocular symptom score (TOSS). Patients were also asked about further symptoms that may be attributable to AC: eyelid dermatitis, frequent blinking; eye sensitivity and frontal headache from squinting or. blinking. All patients we

Emerging drugs for allergic conjunctivitis.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is a very common disease, especially in association with allergic rhinitis but may also occur in isolated presentation. The treatment of AC has long been based on antihistamines, cromones and topical corticosteroids, but none of these drugs completely abolishes the clinical expression of AC. AREAS COVERED: The development of new drugs for AC is analyzed highlighting the recent insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease. The major aim of development of drugs for AC is to have agents able to prevent the inflammatory effects of the i

Oral immunotherapy for allergic conjunctivitis.

Antigen-specific immunotherapy is expected to be a desirable treatment for allergic diseases. Currently, antigen-specific immunotherapy is performed by administering disease-causing antigens subcutaneously or sublingually. These approaches induce long-term remission in patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma. The oral route is an alternative to subcutaneous and sublingual routes, and can also induce long-term remission, a phenomenon known as "oral tolerance." The effectiveness of oral tolerance has been reported in the context of autoimmune diseases, food allergies, asthma, atopic dermatitis

[Allergic conjunctivitis: diagnosis and treatment].

Allergic conjunctivitis are the most frequent presentation of ocular allergy. They concern two specialists, ophthalmologists and allergists, who must establish a close collaboration, to succeed in an etiological diagnosis and consequent efficacious treatment. On one hand the history of allergy must be deep and on the other a simple pollen etiology giving simple functional signs: skin tests (pricks or epicutaneous) after a flawless questioning, at need completed by the measurement of specific and total IgE titres in the tears and even sometimes by a conjunctival provocation test, minimal other

Allergic conjunctivitis to chamomile tea.

Eye washing with chamomile tea is a folk remedy used by the general public to treat conjunctivitis and other ocular reactions. Chamomile is also found in many cosmetic products. Some cases of contact dermatitis (but not reactions of type I) were reported following its topical applications. We present seven hay fever patients that suffered from conjunctivitis; two of them also had lid angioedema after eye washing with chamomile tea. All seven patients had positive skin prick tests to the chamomile tea extract, Matricaria chamomilla pollen and Artemisia vulgaris pollen extracts. Positive conjunc
