Risk communication of study drug side effects: An evaluation of informed consent forms from ClinicalTrials.gov.

BACKGROUND: Understandable safety language within informed consent forms (ICFs) is essential to informed clinical trial enrollment. Risk communication research has established that using the European Commission's (ECs) recommended verbal risk descriptors ('very common, common, uncommon, rare, and very rare') with a frequency band (e.g., 'may affect more than 1 in 10 people'), absolute frequency (e.g., '5 out of 100 participants'), or percentage (e.g., '5 %') is preferred, as it leads to improved comprehension of side effect susceptibility. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine how ICFs present stud

Improved patient awareness and satisfaction using procedure specific consent forms in carpal tunnel decompression surgery.

Carpal tunnel decompression (CTD) is a common procedure amenable to procedure specific consent forms (PSCFs). These may help better inform patients and so increase patient satisfaction with the consent process. We assessed the use of a PSCF for CTD. The PSCF mentions eight complications of carpal tunnel surgery and alternative non-operative treatments. Two groups of 40 patients each were compared prospectively. Patients in one group were issued with a PSCF prior to admission whereas those in the other group were not. After standard pre-operative consent, patients were interviewed prior to surg

AI-generated versus standard informed consent forms in otolaryngology: a blinded multirater pilot feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent documents often exceed recommended readability levels, potentially compromising patients' decision-making. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This pilot feasibility study evaluated two large language models (LLMs), ChatGPT-5.2 and Gemini 3 Pro, as tools for generating more comprehensible otolaryngology surgical consent forms, and estimated effect-size parameters for a future trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective, double-blind design, 123 Turkish consent documents (41 procedures × 3 sources: official forms, ChatGPT-5.2 and Gemini 3 Pro) were evaluated. Three independent ot

The association of patient and clinician demographics and concordance with medicaid sterilization consent form validity.

OBJECTIVE(S): To evaluate the association between patient demographics, clinician demographics, and concordance of patient-clinician demographics and Medicaid sterilization consent form validity, defined as the waiting period having elapsed. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a large, multi-center retrospective cohort study. This analysis included patients with Medicaid insurance desiring postpartum permanent contraception across three study sites. Our primary outcome was Medicaid sterilization consent form validity. Patient demographics were abstracted from the electronic medical record. Cl

Variation in the interpretation and application of the Medicaid sterilization consent form among Medicaid officials.

OBJECTIVE: The Medicaid consent policy has been identified as a major barrier to desired permanent contraception, particularly for low-income communities and communities of color. As each state may modify their state Medicaid sterilization consent form, variation in the form has been reported. This study aims to characterize state-level variation in Medicaid Title XIX consent form interpretation and application. STUDY DESIGN: We aimed to collect primary data from Medicaid officials in all 50 United States from January to May 2020 via a 25-question electronic survey regarding state-level conse

Obstetrician-Gynecologists' Practices in Postpartum Sterilization Without a Valid Medicaid Consent Form.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the practices of obstetrician-gynecologists (ob-gyns) in the United States surrounding postpartum sterilization when the Medicaid consent form was not valid. METHODS: Using the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' online directory, we conducted a qualitative study where we recruited ob-gyns practicing in 10 geographically diverse U.S. states for a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews conducted by telephone. We analyzed interview transcripts using the constant comparative method and principles of grounded theory. RESULTS: Thirty ob-gyns (63%

Assessment of readability of informed consent forms of gynecologic cancer clinical trials: A (Potential) barrier to enrollment?

OBJECTIVE: Limited English language proficiency (LEP) is associated with decreased clinical trial enrollment. Notably, the AMA and the NIH recommend that patient materials have a readability level commensurate to a sixth- through eighth-grade reading level. This study evaluated the readability of informed consent forms for gynecologic oncology clinical trials. METHODS: This was an IRB-exempt, retrospective, quantitative analysis of for gynecologic oncology clinical trials opened at Ohio State University, a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated institution, from 1/1/2017 through 12/31/202

Community interpretation of a consent form and willingness to participate in a Nipah virus vaccine trial in Bangladesh.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical trials conducted in low resource settings of vaccines against unlikely pandemics generate practical barriers to achieving genuine informed consent. Uncertainty over the likelihood of the occurrence of emerging disease threats complicates risk-benefit considerations. We explored how people interpreted the language of a draft consent form for a Phase II trial of a vaccine against Nipah virus (NiV), a lethal bat-borne zoonosis, and assessed their willingness to participate after learning about the trial procedures. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study collecting dat

Analysis of informed consent forms of patients undergoing cancer genetic testing in the era of next-generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: The Department of Clinical Cancer Genetics at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana offers genetic counselling and testing to cancer patients and their relatives. Before undergoing genetic testing, patients sign the informed consent form. In addition to giving consent for collection of biological material and genetic testing, patients decide about storage of biological material and participation in international databases. Furthermore, patients decide whether the information regarding their test results may be revealed to their blood relatives and whether they want to be informed abo

The use of consent forms in a "call from class" model of dental care for Australian Indigenous children.

ISSUES ADDRESSED: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in children. Indigenous children reported a disproportionately higher prevalence of dental disease compared to their age-matched counterparts. To improve access to dental care a community-controlled service provides culturally appropriate dental services on the site of an Indigenous primary and secondary school. The dental clinic utilises a "call from class" model of care. Consent forms seeking permission to undertake a dental examination without a parent/guardian present during school hours are sent home. What information and the extent of information research participants need in informed consent forms: a multi-country survey.

BACKGROUND: The use of lengthy, detailed, and complex informed consent forms (ICFs) is of paramount concern in biomedical research as it may not truly promote the rights and interests of research participants. The extent of information in ICFs has been the subject of debates for decades; however, no clear guidance is given. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the perspectives of research participants about the type and extent of information they need when they are invited to participate in biomedical research. METHODS: This multi-center, cross-sectional, descriptive survey was

The Use of Artificial Intelligence to Improve Readability and Quality of Informed Consent Forms in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

BACKGROUND: The readability and length of informed consent forms have been debated for over three decades. Despite national guidelines promoting patient-friendly language, many forms fall short. This study compares the readability and content quality of informed consents from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and ChatGPT for common plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) procedures. METHODS: ASPS consents for seven common PRS procedures were obtained online. ChatGPT was then queried to create equivalent consents. Readability was assessed using the Flesch Reading Ease Score, Fle

Consensus regarding transoral robotic surgery (TORS) complications for use in a proposed standardised consent form.

Consenting patients for surgery is a vital process with ethical and legal implications. The use of a standardised consent form may provide a solution to issues related to poor communication surrounding the consenting process. To date, there is no standardised consent form available for use specifically for transoral robotic surgery (TORS) across robotic centres. In an attempt to improve the consenting process relating specifically to TORS, this study aims to develop a standardised consent form using a modified Delphi process. A modified Delphi process was employed to define consensus for compl

[Form and extent of informed consent on anesthesia risks: evaluation of a survey of all legal experts in Austria].

BACKGROUND: Statistically, the chance of a patient to win a court case because of a legally insufficient informed consent is approximately 70%. In Austria the judgment whether the anesthesia-related risk of a patient was correctly addressed depends generally on the opinion of a certified expert court witness (CW). OBJECTIVES: The opinion whether well-known anesthetic risks in a commissioned court report drawn by Austrian CWs would be considered to be "typically anesthesia-related" and "needed to be addressed" when obtaining an informed consent was evaluated.
