Distribution and sequestration of palytoxin in coral reef animals.

In the reefs off the Colombian coast (Caribbean Sea) and around Lizard Island, Australia (Pacific), palytoxin (PTX), which has been detected in zoanthid species of the genus Palythoa, also occurred in various other marine organisms living in close association with zoanthid colonies, e.g. sponges (Porifera), soft corals (Alcyonaria), gorgonians (Gorgonaria), mussels, and crustaceans. Predators, e.g. polychaete worms (Hermodice carunculata), a starfish (Acanthaster planci) and fish (Chaetodon species) feeding on Palythoa colonies, accumulate high toxin concentrations in their organs, where PTX i

Identification of marine methylotrophic bacteria cultured from cold-water coral reefs.

Cold-water coral reefs host diverse microbial communities that play key roles in nutrient cycling and deep-sea productivity. Among them, methylotrophic bacteria metabolize and cycle one-carbon (C1) compounds such as methane, methanol, methylated nitrogen and sulphur, linking food webs and having a central role in the global cycling of climate-active trace gases. To date, few methylotrophic bacteria have been cultured from cold-water coral reefs. In this study, we enriched methylotrophs from seawater, sediment and sponge samples collected in cold-water coral reefs off mid-Norway. Cultivation at

Growth rates of coral reefs peaked at 25 °C through the Holocene.

For millennia, corals have built coral-reef structures upon the remains of past generations of coral skeletons, forming the world's most diverse marine ecosystems. Yet, ocean warming and regional and local disturbances are reducing the capacity of coral reefs to grow and keep pace with sea-level rise. Understanding which environmental and climatic conditions influenced reef growth in the past, when human populations were small, may help us understand how reefs respond to contemporary environmental changes. Using coral cores dating back 11,700 calibrated years before present (yr BP) from 291 si

Past disturbances and local conditions influence the recovery rates of coral reefs.

Corals are being increasingly subjected to marine heatwaves. Theory suggests that increasing the intensity of disturbances reduces recovery rates, which inspired us to examine the recovery rates of coral cover following marine heatwaves, cyclones, and other disturbances at 1921 study sites, in 58 countries and three oceans, from 1977 to 2020. In the Atlantic Ocean, coral cover has decreased fourfold since the 1970s, and recovery rates following disturbances have been relatively slow, except in the Antilles. By contrast, reefs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have maintained coral cover and rec

Assessment of marine litter interactions with urban coral reefs in Okinawa, Japan.

This study assessed different reef zones (lagoon, reef crest, reef slope) in three urban locations around Okinawa Island (Mizugama, Ginowan, Sunabe) and two marine protected areas around nearby Aka Island (Hizushi, Sakubaru) for marine litter pollution and litter interactions with reef organisms. A total reef area of 2250 m2 was surveyed by scuba diving, and 46 marine litter items were recorded. Litter density ranged from 0.01 to 0.05 items/m2, and plastics (76.09 %) and metals (15.22 %) were the most common litter types. The substrates for litter items were live corals (52.17 %), followed by

Legacy effects of anthropogenic disturbances modulate dynamics in the world's coral reefs.

Rapidly changing conditions alter disturbance patterns, highlighting the need to better understand how the transition from pulse disturbances to more persistent stress will impact ecosystem dynamics. We conducted a global analysis of the impacts of 11 types of disturbances on reef integrity using the rate of change of coral cover as a measure of damage. Then, we evaluated how the magnitude of the damage due to thermal stress, cyclones, and diseases varied among tropical Atlantic and Indo-Pacific reefs and whether the cumulative impact of thermal stress and cyclones was able to modulate the res

White plague-like coral disease in remote reefs of the Western Caribbean.

The health of coral reef communities has been decreasing over the last 50 years, due the negative effects of human activities combined with other natural processes. We present documentation of a White Plague Disease (WPD) outbreak in the Serrana Bank, an isolated Western Caribbean atoll with presumably inexistent pollutant inputs from local human settlements. In addition, this study summarizes seven years of observations on diseased corals in the nearby island of San Andrés, which in contrast is one of the most populated islands of the Caribbean. There was a massive coral mortality in the atol

Standardised protocols enable efficient assessment of coral bleaching severity across tropical reefs.

Once thriving ecosystems, coral reefs are now undergoing widespread decline as climate change intensifies marine heatwaves. Effective monitoring of these events is critical at global and regional scales. Standardised, repeatable protocols are essential to assess impacts and guide timely management responses. The fourth global coral bleaching event, which began in April 2023, affected roughly 84% of the world's coral reefs, causing extensive stress and mortality. In this study, two bleaching severity assessment protocols were applied to coral reefs of the Maldives (Indian Ocean) to evaluate the

Cloudiness reduces the bleaching response of coral reefs exposed to heat stress.

Climate change and warming ocean temperatures are a threat to coral reef ecosystems. Since the 1980s, there has been an increase in mass coral bleaching and associated coral mortality due to more frequent and severe thermal stress. Although most research has focused on the role of temperature, coral bleaching is a product of the interacting effects of temperature and other environmental variables such as solar radiation. High light exacerbates the effects of thermal stress on corals, whereas reductions in light can reduce sensitivity to thermal stress. Here, we use an updated global dataset of

Enhancing reef carbonate budgets through coral restoration.

Complex reef structure, built via calcium carbonate production by stony corals and other calcifying taxa, supports key ecosystem services. However, the decline in coral cover on reefs of the Florida Reef Tract (US), caused by ocean warming, disease, and other stressors, has led to erosion exceeding accretion, causing net loss of reef framework. Active coral restoration, aimed at rapidly increasing coral cover, is essential for recovering reef structure and function. Traditionally, restoration success focused on the survivorship and growth of transplanted corals. This is the first empirical stu

Assessment of storm impact on coral reef structural complexity.

Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and magnitude. Consequently, it is important to understand their effects and remediation. Resilience reflects the ability of an ecosystem to absorb change, which is important for understanding ecological dynamics and trajectories. To describe the impact of a powerful storm on coral reef structural complexity, we used novel computational tools and detailed 3D reconstructions captured at three time points over three years. Our data-set Reefs4D of 21 co-registered image-based models enabled us to calculate the differences at seven sites over time

Coral reef aorta: case report and review of the literature.

Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare form of atherosclerosis that affects the paravisceral and pararenal aorta and its branches. Patients typically present with arterial insufficiency of the bowels, kidneys and lower extremities. The current mainstay of treatment is operative, typically involving transaortic endarterectomy. Herein, we describe a 54-year-old woman with incapacitating lower extremity claudication secondary to a paravisceral coral reef atheroma treated successfully with transaortic endarterectomy via a left retroperitoneal approach. In addition, we present a complete review of modern

Agents of coral mortality on reef formations of the Colombian Pacific.

The National Monitoring System for Coral Reefs of Colombia (SIMAC) monitors the impact of some of the most important agents of coral tissue loss (bleaching and/or disease) in the Colombian Pacific coral formations since 1998. Physiological bleaching is among the main results of stress in the area. Signs of coral diseases resembling bacterial bleaching such as White Plague and White Band, were observed in Malpelo and Gorgona islands. Damage to the Pacific gorgonian Pacifigorgia spp., similar to those produced by Aspergillosis in Caribbean corals, was detected in Utria Bay. The presence of tumor

Trematodes of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia: emerging patterns of diversity and richness in coral reef fishes.

The Great Barrier Reef holds the richest array of marine life found anywhere in Australia, including a diverse and fascinating parasite fauna. Members of one group, the trematodes, occur as sexually mature adult worms in almost all Great Barrier Reef bony fish species. Although the first reports of these parasites were made 100 years ago, the fauna has been studied systematically for only the last 25 years. When the fauna was last reviewed in 1994 there were 94 species known from the Great Barrier Reef and it was predicted that there might be 2,270 in total. There are now 326 species reported

Reducing consumer pressure increases community dissimilarity leading to coral- or algal-dominance on a coral reef.

In many ecosystems, anthropogenic influences are altering the strength of top-down (e.g., herbivory and predation by consumers) and bottom-up (e.g., nutrients) processes through the exploitation of consumers and increasing anthropogenic nutrient inputs. Altered top-down and bottom-up processes may significantly change ecological communities, resulting in shifts in the abundance or composition of primary producers, or shifts in ecosystem states. An often-overlooked consequence of altered top-down and bottom-up process is how these forces shape community variability, especially following disturb

Ballast water as a vector of coral pathogens in the Gulf of Mexico: the case of the Cayo Arcas coral reef.

The discharge of nutrients, phytoplankton and pathogenic bacteria through ballast water may threaten the Cayo Arcas reef system. To assess this threat, the quality of ballast water and presence of coral reef pathogenic bacteria in 30 oil tankers loaded at the PEMEX Cayo Arcas crude oil terminal were determined. The water transported in the ships originated from coastal, oceanic or riverine regions. Statistical associations among quality parameters and bacteria were tested using redundancy analysis (RDA). In contrast with coastal or oceanic water, the riverine water had high concentrations of c

Coral reef rehabilitation following Hurricane Irma using nano-engineered artificial reefs in Sint Maarten.

Artificial reefs are being increasingly deployed as a coral reef restoration strategy. Additional reef habitats made from conventional substrates (e.g., metal, concrete, etc.) have had limited success in addressing conservation objectives on degraded coral reefs due to structure size and lack of standardized monitoring, and inability to enhance select ecological, and species variables. Technological advances and new restoration methods must be quickly tested and applied on a large scale to curb further deterioration of coral reefs. Here, we present the results of the first deployment of Oceani

Longevity strategies in response to light in the reef coral Stylophora pistillata.

Aging is a multifactorial process that results in progressive loss of regenerative capacity and tissue function while simultaneously favoring the development of a large array of age-related diseases. Evidence suggests that the accumulation of senescent cells in tissue promotes both normal and pathological aging. Oxic stress is a key driver of cellular senescence. Because symbiotic long-lived reef corals experience daily hyperoxic and hypoxic transitions, we hypothesized that these long-lived animals have developed specific longevity strategies in response to light. We analyzed transcriptome va

Chimney Technique to Preserve Visceral Flow in a Coral Reef Aorta.

The coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare phenomenon of extreme calcification in the juxtarenal and suprarenal aorta. Open revascularization has an overall in-hospital mortality rate of 13%. We present a patient with a suprarenal CRA with colon ischemia. She has an extensive past medical history of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting of the celiac trunk (CT) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA). The computed tomography angiography showed a CRA of the suprarenal aorta with occlusion of the CT stent and near occlusion of the SMA stent. Our case illustrates that the CRA in the suprarena

Case report of an unusual and catastrophic presentation of coral reef aorta.

BACKGROUND: Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare condition characterized by atherosclerosis and overt calcification of the aorta leading to severe luminal stenosis of the vessel. Most patients present with hypertension and intermittent claudication at the time of diagnosis. Risk factors associated with this condition are essentially the same as those associated with atherosclerosis. However, no unique condition seems to predispose an individual to develop CRA. CASE SUMMARY: We describe the case of a patient known for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with long-term systemic corticosteroids who pr
