Metaphors For Trauma: A Cross-Cultural Qualitative Comparison in Brazil, India, Poland, and Switzerland.

The concept of psychological trauma implies that people experiencing traumatic stress are wounded, thus relating to the metaphor of a physical injury. Although this notion is widely accepted by clinicians and researchers in mental health, there is evidence of a broad range of metaphorical idioms for extremely aversive experiences or catastrophic events across different cultures. In this ethnopsychological study, we aimed to investigate and contrast culturally shared metaphors for trauma among four distinct cultural groups: two indigenous communities (Pitaguary from Brazil, Adivasis from India)

Cross-cultural comparison of two serial sexual murder series in Italy and the United States.

There have been few documented comparisons of serial murder cases committed in the United States with cases occurring internationally. The authors contrasted two unique serial murder series: one in Italy and one in the United States by examining the details of both series, including the M.O., motivation, crime scene interactions, sexual acts performed, and the general backgrounds of both offenders. The comparison revealed a number of similarities. Both offenders specifically targeted elderly women, who were attacked in their residences. The two series involved sexually motivated crimes, althou

Cross-cultural comparison of levels of childbirth-related fear in an Australian and Swedish sample.

BACKGROUND: research, conducted predominately in Scandinavian countries, suggests that a substantial number of women experience high levels of fear concerning childbirth which can impact on birth outcomes, the mother-infant relationship and the ongoing mental health of the mother. The prevalence of childbirth-related fear (CBRF) is not well known outside of the Nordic nations. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of CBRF in two rural populations (Sweden and Australia) and to pilot a short, easy-to-administer measurement tool. METHODS: a questionnaire assessing a range of childbirth-rela

Methods used in cross-cultural comparisons of somatic symptoms and their determinants.

This paper is the third in a series of reviews of cross-cultural studies of symptoms at midlife. The goal of this review is to examine methods used previously in cross-cultural studies of menopause and women's health at midlife to (1) identify challenges in the measurement of somatic symptoms across cultures and (2) recommend questions and tools that can be used in future research. This review also aims to examine the determinants of somatic symptoms. The review concludes that methods used for assessing somatic symptoms differ across studies. Somatic symptoms, particularly, aches, pain, and fa

Repetitive Behaviours in Williams Syndrome: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between the United Kingdom and Japan.

BACKGROUND: Williams syndrome (WS) is a relatively rare neurodevelopmental condition characterised by distinctive cognitive and behavioural phenotypes, including restricted and repetitive behaviours (RRBs). Although cross-cultural studies suggest that caregiver reports of autism-related RRBs may be culturally subjective, little is known about whether caregiver-reported RRB profiles in WS are similar across cultural contexts. Additionally, because RRB profiles may vary with age, examining cross-sectional age-related patterns is important. This study explored between-country variation and cross-

Core features of callous-unemotional traits: a cross-cultural comparison of youth in four countries.

With considerable debate concerning the impact of culture on the expression of callous-unemotional (CU) traits, it is unclear whether the core features of CU traits generalize to youth across cultures. This study aimed to examine whether cultural differences are reflected in the core features of CU traits and the associations among these features. Network analysis was employed to identify the core features and to examine the network structure of CU traits operationalized by the Inventory of Callous Unemotional traits (ICU) in four community youth samples from different nations (Australia, N =

Cross-cultural Differences in Hallucinations: A Comparison Between Middle Eastern and European Community-Based Samples.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: While literature indicates that culture modulates phenomenological characteristics of hallucinations in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, little is known about the extent culture modulates these characteristics in nonclinical samples. STUDY DESIGN: We compared lifetime prevalence, age of onset, and phenomenology of hallucinations as assessed with the Questionnaire for Psychotic Experiences between samples of nonclinical participants used from the Netherlands (N = 2999) and Qatar (N = 2999). While participant recruitment differed between the 2 countries, the samples

Network structure of ICD-11 adjustment disorder: a cross-cultural comparison of three African countries.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorder is one of the most widespread mental disorders worldwide. In ICD-11, adjustment disorder is characterised by two main symptom clusters: preoccupation with the stressor and failure to adapt. A network analytic approach has been applied to most ICD-11 stress-related disorders. However, no study to date has explored the relationship between symptoms of adjustment disorder using network analysis. AIMS: We aimed to explore the network structure of adjustment disorder symptoms and whether its structure replicates across questionnaire versions and samples. METHOD: A

Attitudes toward people with epilepsy among Arabic and Vietnamese residents of Berlin - A cross-cultural comparison.

INTRODUCTION: Attitudes toward people with epilepsy (PWE) have improved over recent decades, especially in high-income countries including Germany. However, this trend is less pronounced in low-income countries. This study aims to assess and compare attitudes toward PWE in two large ethnocultural minority groups in Berlin: Arabic and Vietnamese residents. METHODS: Residents of Berlin aged 18 years or older, born and raised in selected Arabic countries or Vietnam were invited to participate in a survey. We used a preliminary version of the standardized "Scales of Attitudes toward People with E

Cultural and skill-based influences on driver behaviors: a cross-national comparison between Belgium and Türkiye.

Driver behavior is an important contributing factor in road crashes. It is influenced by various factors. Cultural orientations, such as individualism and collectivism, shape attitudes toward traffic rules and drivers' risk-taking behaviors. However, their interaction with perceived driving skills and national context has received limited attention. The present study examined how individualism-collectivism relates to driver behavior and whether these relationships are moderated by driving skills across two national contexts. Participants completed the questionnaires assessing cultural orientat

What predicts preservice teachers' classroom management self-efficacy? A cross-cultural comparison between China and Australia.

This research examines predictors of preservice teachers' classroom management self-efficacy (CMSE). Our sequential mixed methods research involved cohorts of final year preservice teachers enrolled in either Chinese or Australian universities. Findings show that CMSE is shaped more by experience-based factors-such as perceived support during school-based placements, satisfaction with course content, and the perceived relevance of prior experience-than by university-based coursework participation. Perceived support mitigated negative experiences, although Chinese preservice teachers reported l

Factors that influence morningness-eveningness and daytime sleepiness: A cross-cultural comparison of Iranian and Brazilian adolescents.

As adolescents get older, they become more evening oriented and, because they are usually expected to wake early to attend school, they often present daytime sleepiness, which is associated with negative outcomes. It is still unclear if this is similar cross-culturally. Here, we studied morningness-eveningness and daytime sleepiness in early adolescence from two different developing nations (Brazil and Iran). A total sample of 697 Iranian and Brazilian early adolescents (9- to 15-year-old; 358 boys) from Tehran, Iran, and São Paulo, Brazil, varying in age and parental schooling (a proxy of soc
